%X Selectively surface-modified solids can play a crucialrole in the development of new materials devised togive effective answers to the new technologydemands of the more sustainable 21st-centuryindustry. This has brought about a concentration ofresearch efforts on the elaboration of specificchemical functionality on solid surfaces. Nevertheless,the introduction of specific surface functionalizationon carbon materials has not yet realized the degreeof sophistication and control that other solid materialshave reached. This article reviews the latest researchdeveloped under the CARB-NANOMETAL project(at the Universities of Granada and Ja¨Śn) towardsthe designing of new strategies for the selectivefunctionalization of carbon materials.
