Herrera %J Colombia M¨¦dica %D 2004 %I Universidad del Valle %X Introduction: The professional burn out syndrome is a chronic and adaptive disorder that affects professional lives and has become a threat to the health service Objective: To determine the prevalence of this professional burnout syndrome at moderate and severe levels, its characteristics and the association with family dysfunction in interns and residents of the Hospital Universitario del Valle, Cali, Colombia. Methods: Descriptive and sectional cross study, a self-completion survey was conducted with assessment of sociodemographic variables, family APGAR and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: Were recruited 150 physicians (63 interns and 87 residents) without statistical sociodemographic differences; 128 (85.3%) showed moderate to severe burnout syndrome, the emotional burnout being the most important. 102 (68%) showed family dysfunction (family APGAR <18, range 0-20) more frequent in interns (p 0.01); 90% of physicians with family dysfunction had moderate to severe professional burnout syndrome. The number of night and weekend turns was associated with family dysfunction (p=0.01) and burnout syndrome (p=0.002). Conclusions: The burnout syndrome in interns and residents of Hospital Universitario del Valle, Cali, Colombia is very high associated to a number of night and weekend turns and family dysfunction. %K Burnout syndrome %K Family dysfunction %K Stress %K Interns %K Residents. %U http://colombiamedica.univalle.edu.co/Vol35No4/PDF/DESGASTE.PDF
