%X This article discusses how the coverage of the strikes in the 1980s was carried out by the press of Santa Cruz do Sul, a city hub of Vale do Rio Pardo (RS), whose region is known for concentrating the largest processing tobacco park in the world, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The paper analyzes how the hegemonic newspaper of the region ¨C Gazeta do Sul, from the Gazeta Communications Group - built the discourse on the con icts between capital and labour, which occurred in the municipality during the period of political openness in the country. The discussion is supported theoretically and methodologically in Discourse Analysis and focuses on the way the publication masterminded the voices present in the discourse on this social phe- nomenon. The strike action that is part of the corpus - the general strike of 1987 - points out that the dominant perspectives outlined tend to favor employers.
