%X Por m¨¢s de cuarenta a os, el f¨²tbol fue considerado en Sud¨¢frica un importante escenario en la lucha por la libertad. As¨ª, el movimiento anti-apartheid obtuvo simb¨®licos y cruciales logros en este campo cuando la federaci¨®n local fue suspendida por la Federaci¨®n Internacional de F¨²tbol Asociado (FIFA) de todas las competencias internacionales hasta 1992. Ya en democracia, el f¨²tbol -como otras disciplinas deportivas- ha sido considerado una instancia de encuentro y reconciliaci¨®n en una sociedad marcada por clivajes raciales, por lo cual la adjudicaci¨®n de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA fue aclamada por los sudafricanos y por todo el continente africano como una gran victoria que hac¨ªa crecer las expectativas en torno a los beneficios de este evento para mejorar la calidad de vida de millones de personas. El objetivo principal de este art¨ªculo es analizar las motivaciones pol¨ªticas, econ¨®micas y sociales tras la organizaci¨®n de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA Sud¨¢frica 2010. Es un estudio explicativo sustentado en la revisi¨®n de fuentes secundarias e informaci¨®n oficial entregada por el gobierno de Sud¨¢frica tendiente a estimar las implicancias diplom¨¢ticas de un evento que claramente sobrepas¨® lo netamente deportivo. For over forty years, the soccer was considered in South Africa an important scenario in the struggle for freedom, obtaining the anti-Apartheid movement symbolic, but crucial achievements in this sphere when the local federation was suspended by FIFA from all international competitions until 1992. Once democracy, the soccer -like other sports- has been considered an instance of encounter and reconciliation in a society marked by racial cleavages, thus awarding the FIFA World Cup was hailed by the South Africa's people and the African continent as a great victory that raised expectations about the benefits of this event to improve the quality of life for millions of people. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze the political, economical and social motivations behind the organization of FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. It is an explanatory study supported by the review of secondary sources and official data provided by the South African government aimed at estimating the diplomatic implications of an event that clearly surpassed the purely sporting.
