%X Los bancos centrales act迆an como prestamistas de 迆ltima instancia de los bancos comerciales y otras instituciones financieras. Sin embargo, existe bastante controversia sobre si es conveniente o no que ejerzan esta funci車n. En este art赤culo se analizan, en primer lugar, los aspectos principales de esta controversia. Adem芍s, se presenta la versi車n cl芍sica del prestamista de 迆ltima instancia, representada por las recomendaciones de Thorton y Bagehot, y se analiza c車mo han actuado en la pr芍ctica los bancos centrales en su funci車n de prestamistas de 迆ltima instancia. Finalmente se discute brevemente c車mo esta funci車n se puede extender al contexto internacional Central banks act as lenders of last resort to commercial banks and other financial institutions. However, there is much controversy about whether or not they should perform this function. This article analyses, in the first place, the principal aspects of this controversy. Furthermore, the classical version of the lender of last resort is presented, according to the recommendations of Thorton and Bagehot, together with an analysis of the way in which central banks have acted in practice as lenders of last resort. Finally there is a brief discussion on how this function could be extended to the international context
