%X The present study aims to accomplish a reading of the tale "Civiliza  o§ (1892) by E a de Queir車s. Through the analysis of the changes occurred in the protagonist＊s library during the narrative, it is possible to observe that the author uses the titles of the books as a textual strategy that shows the ideological change in the main character. As in other works by this author, Literature becomes a character in the Ecian tale.
