%X From case studies of commissioned officers of the French Gendarmerie, this article shows how the recruitment and training can contribute, in an informal manner, to the distribution of power in police organizations. The diversity of recruitment constitutes, in fact, a true ¡°cast¡± system, with a stratification of commissioned officers in three hierarchical levels, that produces, beyond meritocratic principles, manifest inequalities in the distribution of power in the organization of the Gendarmerie.A partir du cas des officiers de la gendarmerie fran aise, cet article montre comment le recrutement et la formation peuvent contribuer, de mani¨¨re informelle, ¨¤ la r¨¦partition du pouvoir dans les organisations polici¨¨res. La diversit¨¦ des voies de recrutement est constitutive, dans les faits, d¡¯un v¨¦ritable syst¨¨me de  castes , avec une stratification des officiers en trois niveaux hi¨¦rarchis¨¦s, qui produit, par-del¨¤ les principes m¨¦ritocratiques, des in¨¦galit¨¦s manifestes dans la r¨¦partition du pouvoir dans l¡¯organisation gendarmique.
