%X RESUMO O Estado de S o Paulo ¨¦ reconhecido pela sua grande importancia como p¨®lo emissor no turismo nacional, no entanto, observa-se uma escassez de estudos sobre a institucionaliza  o do turismo no poder p¨²blico estadual. Por meio deste trabalho foram identificados os modelos de organiza  o e atua  o utilizados pelo organismo estadual de turismo de S o Paulo na promo  o do desenvolvimento tur¨ªstico. Para tanto, realizou-se uma extensa revis o de documentos oficiais relativos ao tema, que foram reunidos e organizados cronologicamente, observando o per¨ªodo de 1965 at¨¦ 2007. Assim, foi poss¨ªvel esquematizar e compreender a evolu  o das a  es p¨²blicas estaduais e da estrutura organizacional do ¨®rg o de turismo do estado. Os resultados obtidos contribuem para a constru  o do panorama do desenvolvimento do ¨®rg o p¨²blico de turismo do Estado de S o Paulo, e conseq¨¹entemente, pode subsidiar as a  es de planejamento tur¨ªstico. Palavras-chave: turismo, Estado de S o Paulo; poder p¨²blico. ABSTRACT The state of S o Paulo is known for its importance in the National Tourism. Conversely, there is a lack of studies about the institutionalization of tourism in the State and even about the activities of the Government. In this work were identified models of the organization and performance used by the state in the promotion of tourism development. It was made an extensive review of official documents related to the issue, set up by the Tourism Secretaries, which were collected and organized chronologically in the period from 1965 until 2007. Thus, it was possible to schematize and understand the evolution of the operation and organizational structure of the institution of tourism in the State. Altogether this data contribute to elucidate the historical development of Sao Paulo State Governamental Tourism Institution panorama. Consequently, subsidies the planning according to the reality and needs of the Government. Keywords: tourism , State of S o Paulo; public power.
