%X This article analyzes the short story "Horse Portrait" (Tutam¨¦ia ¨C terceiras est¨®rias, 1967), written by Jo o Guimar es Rosa. We will discuss the relationship of the characterswith reality and representation within the narrative, focusing on the photograph of thehorse and the meanings that are added to it. We will seek to show how the signs in some passages of light and shadow bind to the representation, which destabilizes the most of the other characters and objects depicted. To this end, dialogue with Plato, Merleau-Ponty, Blanchot and Barthes whenever we deem this necessary dialogue.
