%X Psychoanalysis offers an interpretive framework for the understanding of mestizo identity. The spheres of law and of values serve as the symbolic reference for the construction of this identity. Institutions such as the church, state, and family act as vehicles for transmitting these values, building from them a mestizo imaginary that is re-created in the workplace, beliefs, social opportunities, and in everyday life. The mestizo responds to these social demands that influence his or her social self with values adjusted to his or her reality and re-signified from particular family and cultural histories, which are not exempt from conflict. The Province of Santaf¨¦ in the second half of the nineteenth century serves as the backdrop to offer reflections on this issue El psicoan¨¢lisis brinda un esquema interpretativo para la reflexi¨®n sobre la identidad del mestizo. El ¨¢mbito de la ley y de los valores son el referente simb¨®lico para construir esta identidad, instituciones como la iglesia, el estado y la familia act¨²an como veh¨ªculos transmisores de esos valores construyendo, a partir de ellos, un mundo imaginario del mestizo que se recrea en el trabajo, las creencias, las oportunidades sociales y en su vida cotidiana. El mestizo responde a esas demandas sociales que moldean su yo social con valores ajustados a su realidad y resignificados desde su historia familiar y cultural no exenta de conflictos. La Provincia de Santaf¨¦ en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII es el lugar que nos permite adelantar estas reflexiones.
