%X O presente artigo parte de uma an¨¢lise das principais dinamicas de afirma  o da masspolitik e de industrializa  o e democra-tiza  o da imprensa portuguesa, no final do s¨¦culo XIX e no in¨ªcio do s¨¦culo XX, para situar e compreender a rela  o que o rei D. Carlos teve com o mundo dos jornais e da opini o p¨²blica, desde os tempos da educa  o como Pr¨ªncipe Real at¨¦ ¨¤ aposta final em Jo o Franco e ao desfecho tr¨¢gico do regic¨ªdio. ¨¦ assim poss¨ªvel observar como a hist¨®ria da queda da monar-quia constitucional tamb¨¦m resultou, entre diversos outros fatores, das dificuldades que o Pa o e os pol¨ªticos do sistema tiveram em conviver com as exig¨ºncias jornal¨ªsticas pr¨®prias da ¡°idade de ouro¡± da imprensa portuguesa. The present article analyses the main currents that mark the evolution of the Portuguese press at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth - masspolitik, industrialization and democratization. It aims to understand the relationship between the King (D. Carlos I) and the newspapers and the public opinion from the time of his political beginnings as Prince Royal to his final political bet on Jo o Franco and the tragic debacle of the regicide. In this way, we hope to make sense of how the end of the constitutional monarchy was the outcome, among other factors, of the problems posed to the Court and the regime¡¯s main political figures by the demands made by the newspapers stemming from what we may now call the ¡°golden age¡± of the Portuguese press.
