%X A ades o ao euro representou uma mudan a de regime econ車mico. Esta mudan a coincidiu com o in赤cio de uma d谷cada de fraco crescimento econ車mico e diverg那n-cia em rela  o 角 Uni o Europeia. O efeito do novo regime econ車mico no crescimento da econo-mia portuguesa de per si tem permanecido ausente da maioria dos estudos. O objetivo da an芍lise contrafactual desenvolvida neste artigo 谷 quantificar o impacto do euro no crescimento do produto interno bruto portugu那s. Os resultados sugerem que o crescimento da economia portuguesa foi adversamente afetado pela ades o de Portugal 角 Uni o Econ車mica e Mone-t芍ria. No entanto, o euro parece ter funcionado como ※porto de abrigo§ durante a recess o provocada pela crise financeira internacional. Portugal faced a decade of feeble economic growth after joining the European Economic and Monetary Union. Systematic research of the specific effects of this regime change on growth is still lacking. The -counterfactual analysis that we undertake in this paper seeks to fill such a gap. Our findings suggest that the adoption of the Euro did have adverse effects on Portuguese economy. To the contrary, in 2009, the Euro seems to have sheltered the -Portuguese economy from the worse effects of the international financial crisis.
