%X This paper discusses the state of production of doctoral theses in Spanish universities and their dissemination, in light of changes that occurred over the period 1997每2008. The transformation factors that had to be dealt with included the process of adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the huge impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and the appearance of the Open Access movement designed to provide free access to scientific and scholarly literature. Following an exhaustive review of the existing studies on doctoral theses, this paper examines the statistics compiled by the National Statistics Institute (INE), EUROSTAT and other specialized sources. Some of the major databases and cooperative theses repositories at both the Spanish national and international level are described. Finally, the data are analysed and conclusions drawn on the ability of the Spanish academic system to disseminate knowledge via the training of new scientists. El art赤culo analiza el estado de la producci車n y difusi車n de tesis doctorales en las universidades espa olas, a la luz de los cambios acaecidos en el per赤odo 1997-2008. Entre los factores de transformaci車n cabe se alar el proceso de adaptaci車n al Espacio Europeo de Educaci車n Superior (EEES), el enorme impacto de las Tecnolog赤as de la Informaci車n y de las Comunicaciones (TIC) y el movimiento orientado al acceso abierto (Open Access) de los documentos cient赤ficos. Despu谷s de una exhaustiva revisi車n bibliogr芍fica de la literatura profesional sobre tesis doctorales, se examinan las series estad赤sticas elaboradas por el Instituto Nacional de Estad赤stica (INE), EUROSTAT y otras fuentes especializadas. A continuaci車n, se describen algunas de las principales bases de datos y repositorios cooperativos de tesis existentes a nivel espa ol e internacional. Finalmente, se analizan los datos obtenidos y se extraen algunas conclusiones sobre la capacidad del sistema acad谷mico espa ol para generar y difundir conocimiento a partir de la formaci車n de nuevos investigadores.
