%X El inter谷s de la investigaci車n fue profundizar en la valoraci車n que dan al hijo hombres y mujeres en los sectores menos favorecidos. Su objetivo: indagar sobre el significado del hijo para integrantes de diferentes estructuras familiares. La experiencia de campo incluy車 entrevistas a miembros de ocho familias. Los datos fueron analizados con el m谷todo de las comparaciones constantes. Los resultados indican que en el discurso la noci車n del hijo aparece de forma contradictoria en diferentes momentos del ciclo vital y al relacionarlo con diversos eventos de la vivencia cotidiana; el hijo es un ideal mediado por las experiencias que tiene cada persona alrededor de la maternidad y la paternidad, su significado est芍 asociado a patrones de orden ideol車gico, cultural y religioso. The purpose of this paper is to enlarge our understanding of how children are valued by men and women in impoverished populations in Caracas. The objective of this study is to examine the meaning that children have for the members of different family structures. The field experience included interviews with eight families. The data was analyzed using the constant comparison method. Results show contrasting conceptions of children in terms of particular moments in people's lifetimes, and their everyday experiences. The meaning of a child is seen as an ideal related to people's experiences with their maternity and paternity. This meaning is also associated with ideological, cultural and religious patterns.
