%X This article attempts to examine critically the image that contemporary historiography has built around the figure of Captain Miguel Caldera. In contrast, it shows aspects that bring us closer to his Hispanic identity, to his role as a member of the militia in the service of Philip II of Spain and to the part he played as an instrument of domination and in the disappearance of the nomads of the Chichimecan frontier. It also contributes to the discussion of frontier cultural development in the context of the Hispanic monarchy¡¯s expansion in the 16th century. Este art¨ªculo intenta un acercamiento cr¨ªtico a la imagen que la historiograf¨ªa contempor¨¢nea ha construido en torno a la figura del capit¨¢n Miguel Caldera. Muestra, en contraste, elementos que nos aproximan a su identidad hisp¨¢nica, a su papel como miliciano al servicio de Felipe II y a su funci¨®n como veh¨ªculo de la dominaci¨®n y desaparici¨®n de los n¨®madas de la frontera chichimeca. Tambi¨¦n pretende aportar elementos de discusi¨®n sobre el proceso cultural fronterizo en el ¨¢mbito de la expansi¨®n de la monarqu¨ªa hisp¨¢nica en el siglo XVI.
