%X The History role as a knowledge source in the Eighteenth-Century forced an objective revision about the past Spanish influence in America to answer to European accusations spread from the previous century. In this speech, the visual propaganda of the art of the portrait was determinant to construct an image of America where its main protagonists should reconciled the mistakes of the past with the projection of a future built under the spirit of the Enlightenment and the new values and virtues of universal type. El papel de la historia como fuente de conocimiento en el siglo dieciocho hizo necesario revisar objetivamente el pasado espa ol en Am¨¦rica para responder a las denuncias europeas divulgadas desde la centuria anterior. En este discurso, la propaganda visual del arte del retrato fue determinante para construir una imagen de Am¨¦rica donde sus principales protagonistas reconciliasen los errores del pasado con la proyecci¨®n de un futuro acorde al esp¨ªritu ilustrado y los nuevos valores y virtudes de tipo universal.
