%X Lyudmila Ulitskaya's Zelenyj  ater (Imago) is an interesting example of new realism, a trend which has been making its way in contemporary Russian literature and which expresses the need to understand the impact of historical events of the last century not only on everyday life of Russian people, but most of all on their inner life and human relationships. Ulitskaya is in search of the sense lost in the folds of history. She describes History through individual stories and makes it alive by evoking its atmosphere and sensitivity, writing about everything which was meaningful to those who had lived through it: the realia, the various social milieux, the people. The description of that period is made even more convincing by the insertion of autobiographical elements and by the liveliness of the characters of the novel. The latter impress themselves on our memory and the readers, perceiv-ing them as intelligible and close, tend, to an unpredictable extent, to feel part of the narration and get involved, soul and mind, in the outer and inner real-ity of its characters.
