The paper presents a shape innovation approach which is inspired by displacement mapping and can generate innovative shape. The approach includes four parts. The first is extracting 3D pattern from an interesting model which is taken as primitive of displacement texture. The second is defining the 3D design knowledge of host polygonal model, including mapping coordinate type and other parameters. The third is subdividing adaptively polygons of the host according to the design knowledge.
