%X objective: to determine the utility of the high concentrations of the £¿-chorionic gonadotropin hormone in vaginal fluids in the diagnosis of premature rupture of membranes. methods: prospective and comparative study in 120 healthy pregnant women divided into 2 groups, with and without premature rupture of membranes. the concentrations of this hormone in vaginal fluids were determined. setting: delivery room. "maternidad concepcion palacios", caracas. results: the concentrations of £¿-chorionic gonadotropin hormone in vaginal fluids higher than 17.10 mui/ml are related with premature rupture of membranes, with a sensibility of 98.33 %, specificity of 93.33 %, positive predictive value of 93.65 % and negative predictive value of 98.54 %. conclusions: the high concentrations of £¿-chorionic gonadotropin hormone in vaginal fluids constitute a reliable method for the diagnosis of premature rupture of membranes.
