%X this article aims to revise the concepts of regionalism and regionalization within the particular context of south america. four waves of regionalization or integration are distinguished, beginning in the 1960s and culminating with the current tendencies. in its course the article examines the changes in mercosur and the andean community, together with the process of construction and negotiation of the incipient south american community of nations.
