%X in the intensive care unit at carlos j. finlay hospital ,224 deceased with necropsy documents were studied from 2000 to 2002, in order to determine the main basic and direct causes of death and to know the clinical pathological correlation, with this purpose was utilized a classification applied in the automated system of registration and control of pathological anatomy. the coronary arteriosclerosis represents the main basic cause of death for clinical diagnosis for necropsies and shock is the most frequent direct cause. the diagnostic discrepancy is 26.1% in the basic cause of death and 29.9% in the direct cause of death.
