%X this article concerns the subject of the brazilian national identity analysing a text written in the beginning of xix century by the scholar and political activist frei [friar] caneca. looking at the independence process particularities, this article tries to accentuate the historical importance of the frei caneca's text, showing for how long the national identity matters involved the established social relationships. with this article we tried to emphasize the historical meaning of the abandon of the brazilian-portuguese union project in the same moment that a people collectivity idea was searched in a strictly brazilian sense.
