Nuria Benach
Finisterra - Revista Portuguesa de Geografia , 1994,
Abstract: THE PROMOTION OF NEW TERTIARY ACTIVITIES IN BARCELONA - The profound extent of the recent transformation of cities can be analysed through the changes shown in urban patterns and urban functions, as well as through their relationship with new ways of urban planning. This article begins by evaluating the extent of the tertiary sector in Barcelona through the development of several macroeconomical indicators. Then we study the centralising tendency in the location of certain tertiary activities, especially those involved in decision and management, and those of the recently growing producer services. Afterwards we look at tertiary activities relevance as an instrument of urban politics in general, and in the case of Barcelona, in particular. Finally, we foresee the situation of certain branches with major potencial growth such as tourism, health or financial services.

Yang Yang
Chinese Studies (ChnStd) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/chnstd.2014.31002
Abstract: With the rapid economic development and social progress, the increased polarization between urban and rural areas makes the wealth gap become the resistance to block the development of state and society. The basic reason to widen the polarization of the rich and the poor is that the basic public service is not equal in urban and rural areas. And the problem of the rural-urban education’s fairness is the core problem of the basic public service between urban and rural areas. So this paper is aimed at sorting out the current situation of education justice between urban and rural areas, and studying the reasons and the countermeasures of the problem.
Health Status and Access to Health Services in Indian Slums  [PDF]
Indrani Gupta, Pradeep Guin
Health (Health) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/health.2015.72029
Abstract: This paper analyzes the state of health and access to health services among the urban poor in India. Analysis is based on data from a primary survey conducted among 2000 households, covering 10,929 individuals from four cities of India. Summary statistics and regressions (using STATA) are used for data analysis. Results show lack of government facilities and services, a very high preference for private health facilities, high expenses especially in private but also in public facilities, and a perception that private facilities are offering high quality services as important concerns. An econometric analysis of the determinants of acute illness indicates the insufficiency of basic amenities like sanitation, garbage disposal and potable water. Together with the lack of availability of government health facilities in the vicinity, these results indicate continued vulnerability of the urban poor, and the need for urgent government action.

Iwona Szumacher
Miscellanea Geographica - Regional Studies on Development , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10288-012-0008-3
Abstract: The concept of ecosystems services has become an important model for linking the functions of ecosystems to human welfare. The aim of this paper is to identify ecosystem services generated by green areas within the urban area, classify and value them. "Ecosystem services" refers to components of nature, directly enjoyed, consumed, or used to yield human well-being (Boyd, Banzhaf 2007). This definition advances the ability to use ecosystem services as a practical measurement tool.

Cattaneo Pineda,Rodrigo Andrés;
EURE (Santiago) , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0250-71612011000300001
Abstract: despite the influence in the scientific debate of the hypothesis of an interaction between economic globalization and the development of a new metropolitan model, few studies have handled the analysis of the concrete forms of articulation between these two spheres. the main purpose of this paper is to appraise the contribution of one form of capital market operators - chilean real estate investment trusts- in the making of housing spaces in santiago. based on the examination of their residential assets, this article shows their growing role in the funding of private housing. they seem to favor housing models and localizations that suitably match up the timings and policies of their internal functioning. consequently, it appears they have direct responsibility on the verticalization of the skyline and on the renovation of central neighborhoods. in the diffusion of the requirements the capital markets in the housing sector and in its asset managements tools we see a new facet of the progressive "finantiarization" of big metropolis.

Planning the Intermediate City, or How to Do Better with Little: The Case of the City of Nueve de Julio, Argentina  [PDF]
Jean Claude Bolay
Current Urban Studies (CUS) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/cus.2018.63020
With 92% of its population living in urban areas, Argentina is one of the most urbanized countries on the planet. Like in many South Countries, the populations of the small and medium-sized cities, which serve as intermediate centers between the countryside and the urban network, are growing steadily. Such cities in Argentina offer services and infrastructures to both urban and rural populations, as well as a residential alternative to the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan area. These cities, however, are facing specific problems that require appropriate responses. In this respect, Nueve de Julio is emblematic of the challenges facing these intermediate cities. As one of the hundred cities created in the 19th century by the Argentinian government, Nueve de Julio is today a city whose population is increasing, and territory is expanding, but that lacks any foresight to anticipate the next 20 or 30 years. Our purpose is to analyze the reasons of this stagnation, explain the serious development problems the city confronts, with disparities in the organization of its territory and 20% of population living in poverty, and foresee an open system of urban planning, capable to guide the urban authorities and its partners in the identification of priorities and investments in favor of all the inhabitants. The government seems helpless in dealing with this. Political activism prevails over planning and varies from one election to the next depending on the party in power. Means are lacking, both financially and in terms of technical skills. Establishing an open system of urban planning is imperative. Based on the collaboration of citizen, the goals of the planning should include social, economic and spatial integration, efforts to include the city’s poor and more rational, less costly development of the suburban periphery. This will enable Nueve de Julio to better play its role as an intermediate city for the entire urban and regional population with regard to business, administration, education and health services.
