Nutritional Status of Mothers and Its Determinants in Alemtidad Area, Khartoum  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: Nutritional status of mothers is considered one of the major problems facing mothers in the world. The nutrition plays a major role in mothers and child health. Objective: This study aims to assess mothers’ nutritional status and its determinants in Alemtidad area, Khartoum. Methods: A descriptive community based survey was conducted in the Alemtidad area of Khartoum between November 2012 and December 2012. One hundred and eighty mothers were selected by simple randomization. Data were collected by using structured designed questionnaire which was then analyzed by (SPSS) program version 20. Results: The study conducted among mothers in Alemtidad area; their age ranged between 19 and 86 years with the mean age 38 ± 12 years. From those mothers about half were unemployed, and having mainly primary and secondary educational level. 81.1% of mothers were not able to select the proper food according to age and nutrients and about 71.1% of mothers took two meals per day and 23.3% one meals per day, and only 5.6 take three meals per day. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated to measure the nutrition status of mothers; this study shows that mothers in Alemtidad are mainly overweight and obese, 45.6% and 18% respectively and only 35% within normal range of Body Mass Index (BMI). Conclusion: The study concludes that mothers are either overweight or obese (45.6%, 17.7% respectively). Compared to national and international statistics the findings of this study reflect high Body Mass Index (BMI) of mothers in Alemtidad.
Nutrition Status of Children Under-Five Years in Cassava Consuming Communities in Nambale, Busia of Western Kenya  [PDF]

Abstract: A study was carried out to assess the nutritional status of under-five child population within cassava consuming community in Nambale of western Kenya. A structured questionnaire was used to collect socio economic data, 24-hour food re-call and anthropometric measurements. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Descriptive statistics were used while Pearson’s Chi Square and correlation coefficient (R) were used to test for statistical associations. A total of 320 households with 232 children participated. The findings showed nutrition status of children to be poor (<-2 SD), 26.6% were stunted, 13.9% underweight, and 10.1% were wasting. Malnutrition had reached its peak during the third year affecting boys more than girls despite a high mean score (9.2) for household dietary diversity. The findings established cassava utilization to be high (94.3%) and mainly as “porridge, boiled roots and ugali”. Eight staples including cassava were used for weaning and 66.4% of the children were fed three times daily. Cassava utilization was not a determinant of child nutrition status. Age of child and education level of head of household had strong but negative influence on child nutrition status, (Pearson’s R = -0.207: -0.174) indicating >50% changes in stunting could not be attributed to age of child or education level of the head of household. Farm ownership was a strong positive determinant of nutrition status, Pearson’s R = 0.233. This study has established that cassava cushions hunger and there is need to improve nutrient content.

Abstract: background: bad nutricional status in preoperative period - mainly associated to weight loss -, may lead to grater number of postoperative complications. aim: to investigate the nutritional risk indicators in preoperative period, stratified by disease groups treated at the site. methods: a total of 512 patients with the following conditions were assessed: acute abdomen, digestive tract diseases, biliary diseases, gynecological diseases, vascular diseases, hernias and traumas. the following data were analyzed: body mass index, recent weight loss, habitual energy intake, lymphocyte count and length of hospital stay. the data were compared among the disease groups. the chi-square test or fisher's exact test when necessary was used to compare proportions. the significance level was set at 5%. results: trauma patients followed by those with digestive tract diseases and acute abdomen had significantly lower body mass index (p=0.0222), and the ones with acute abdomen presented recent weight loss at hospital admittance (p=0.0048). a greater percentage of severe and moderate immune depletion was seen in patients with acute abdomen (p<0.0001) and those with vascular diseases had a greater percentage of patients with energy intake below 1000 kcalories (p=0.0311). trauma patients presented longer hospital stays (p<0.0001). conclusion: trauma and acute abdomen patients had greater nutritional risk during the preoperative period. thus, nutritional care strategies should be oriented towards them since the hospital admittance.

Abstract: Mother is the origion of human life, whether she gives birth to male or a female baby. However only healthy mothers can produce healthy children. The foetus, which grows rapidly depends solely on its mother for the nourishment.Nutrition plays an important and special role in the course of pregnancy for the maintenance of sound maternal health. Hence the requirement of nutrients for women during pregnancy increase significantly in order to meet the extra demands for rapid growth and development of foetus. It is unfortunate to know that nutritional status of pregnant women in India is very poor as the diets are grossly deficient in supplying energy and other essential nutrients.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) is a scale developed to evaluate the risk of malnutrition in senior citizens and to identify those who might benefit from early intervention. The objective of this study was to verify the nutritional profile of elderly individuals through the application of the MNA in three different locations: at the Geriatric outpatient clinic and two long-term institutions. METHODS: Through transversal observation study the MNA was applied to 90 elderly people of both genders over 60 years of age. The MNA version modified by Rubenstein et al. [4] and translated into Portuguese was used to evaluate the patients for this study. The descriptive analysis of variables is shown as the average ± one standard deviation (SD). RESULTS: At the AG, the risk of malnutrition was found to be 72.73% ± 3.77%, while 27.27% ± 3.77% of the patients were eutrophic; no malnourished elderly patients were found. At the ASVP, 15.38% ± 11.28% of elderly patients were found to be malnourished, 35.90% ± 15.10% were found to be at risk of malnutrition and 48.72% ± 15.72% were eutrophic. At the PMI, 42.50% ± 15.30% of the elderly patients were found to be malnourished, 25% ± 13.40% were at risk of malnutrition and 32.50% ± 14.50% were eutrophic. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the high prevalence of elderly patients that were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, a more detailed evaluation of their nutritional states is required, as well as a regular follow up of those patients and a dietary intervention to reverse the situation.
Nutritional Status of Elderly People Living at Home in Sidi-Bel-Abbes (West Algeria)  [PDF]

Abstract: The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional status of a cohort of elderly people living independently at home. 314 elderly individuals were selected during general medicine examinations. The collection of nutritional data concerned the measurement of some anthropometric parameters (body weight, height, and BMI), the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and serum albumin. The average age was 72.92 ± 6.26 years with a feminine predominance (59.55%). The BMI was 25.63 ± 4.43 Kg·m-2 and serum albumin 36.45 ± 5.77 g·L-1. 61% of the investigated population were affected by chronic diseases such as: diabetes (39%). Using the MNA as a mean of screening; 46.18% of individuals presented a risk of malnutrition and 4.78% were undernourished. However, when the BMI and serum albumin were used; 14.01% and 42.35% have been considered as undernourished respectively. The MNA seems to be a more sensitive tool rather than the other screening parameters (BMI and serum albumin) in the assessment of nutritional risk in the elderly.

Abstract: Background: Malnutrition is common for elderly representing a major public health problem with many consequences for the health. Objectives: To assess the nutritional status of a population of elderly living at home. Subjects and Methods: The assessment was conducted from a population of elderly living at home who saw their doctor in the office of a public health centre. For each subject, the anthropometric parameters (weight, height, body mass index (BMI)), biochemical (serum albumin) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tools have been measured and calculated. Results: 202 mostly female (56.44%) subjects aged 73.59 ± 5.87 years were included in this study. 78% were suffering from chronic diseases, the most frequent of which was diabetes (32%). 7.43% of the diseased population have BMI < 21, 5.94% experienced undernutrition (MNA < 17) and 68.81% are at risk of malnutrition (MNA: 17 - 23.50). According to serum albumin, 8.91% of the sample is considered to be malnourished. Conclusion: The MNA has proven to be a screening tool more sensitive than other tools (BMI and albumin) in the evaluation of nutritional risk.
Impact of nutritional support on nutritional status and nitrogen balance in surgical patients of a developing country  [PDF]

Abstract: To assess the nutritional status, its change after surgery and impact of nutritional support on urinary nitrogen losses (UNL) and nitrogen balance (NB) based on changing serum albumin levels in a developing country, 89 patient (58 M) aged 39 yrs ±15 were studied. Nutritional assessment was done at admission and 2 weeks postoperatively. UNL and NB was assessed on postoperative day one (D1), two (D2), four (D4), six (D6), eight (D8) and eleven (D11) respectively. Malnutrition varied from 27 (30.3%) using body mass index to 78 (87%) by triceps skin fold thickness. Patients with falling or static serum albumin levels (Group I) showed a significant decrease (‘p’ = 0.001) in their nutritional parameters compared to those with increasing albumin (Group II). Postoperatively till D2 both groups had similar negative NB but Group II improved earlier to become positively balanced by D11 (‘p’ < 0.001). Regression analysis of nitrogen intake (Ni) on UNL on each day revealed negative association till D2 to become positively associated from D4 onwards being significant on D4 (‘p’ = 0.001) & D6 (‘p’ = 0.05*). There is a significant nutritional depletion after surgery especially in patients with falling/static serum albumin levels and NB improves earlier in patients with rising albumin levels. Increasing Ni helps in decreasing UNL.
Nutritional Status and School Achievements in a Rural Area of Anti-Atlas, Morocco  [PDF]

Abstract: Nutritional status is the best indicator of the global well-being of children. However, malnutrition affects physical growth, cognitive development, physical work capacity, and it consequently influences human performance and health. The present study was designed to identify factors that may influence the nutritional status and educational achievements of the children in a rural area of ANTI Atlas of Morocco. The nutritional status of 162 children (12 to 15 years of age) was assessed by nutritional anthropometry and compared with tables of weight-for-age and height-for-age z-scores (WAZ and HAZ) identifying wasting and stunting, respectively. A questionnaire was developed to collect information about socio-economic and demographic status of the children’s families. Also, educational achievements were assessed by their score in mathematics. A total of 162 children (64 boys and 98 girls), aged 12 –15 years. Results revealed 22.8% of stunting and 35.2% of wasting. Child age (p = 0.027), illiteracy of the mother (p = 0.004) was determinant factors with wasting. Stunting was significantly associated with gender (p = 0.03) and parents’ employment (p = 0.009). However, using logistic regression analysis, the results showed that stunting (p = 0.04) and mother level of education (p = 0.032) were significantly correlated with school achievements.In this area of study, malnutrition remains a major problem among adolescents’ school performances, which can affect their future. The main causes of malnutrition seem to be the bad weaning practices among school children and cultural attitudes of food. The educational achievements of school children are influenced by maternal education and stunting.

Abstract: To assess the relationship between food consumption at home, nutritional status, gender preference and the preference-selection of natural products (fruits and vegetables) and industrialized (candies and chips) in a situation of free access for a population of Mexican schoolchildren. 115 children participated in the test, 59 boys and 56 girls from second, fourth and sixth grade of elementary school. We have taken measures of weight, size and the 24-hour consumption record during over five days, at which time also we evaluated the preference and selection of a group of ten products (naturals and industrialized). According to the results 60% of children had normal weight, 23.47% overweight, 14.8% risk of overweight an 1.73% underweight. There were no significant differences with X2 test between nutritional status and gender. Multivariate analysis was applied between gender, consumption by food groups and nutritional status, the interaction was significant in all cases. The Pearson correlation between preference and food choice in the situation of open access is high in the school students at risk of overweight. The preferred and selected products for consumption are those with the highest content of saturated fat, sugars and salt, the less preferred and selected products were fruits and vegetables. We could conclude that the population is at risk for their low consumption of fruits and vegetables; situation that is reflection of the home consumption this document.
