A Survey on Multiview Video Synthesis and Editing

Abstract: Multiview video can provide more immersive perception than traditional single 2-D video. It enables both interactive free navigation applications as well as high-end autostereoscopic displays on which multiple users can perceive genuine 3-D content without glasses. The multiview format also comprises much more visual information than classical 2-D or stereo 3-D content, which makes it possible to perform various interesting editing operations both on pixel-level and object-level. This survey provides a comprehensive review of existing multiview video synthesis and editing algorithms and applications. For each topic, the related technologies in classical 2-D image and video processing are reviewed. We then continue to the discussion of recent advanced techniques for multiview video virtual view synthesis and various interactive editing applications. Due to the ongoing progress on multiview video synthesis and editing, we can foresee more and more immersive 3-D video applications will appear in the future.
Quasi-Feature based Panoramic Video Creation for Multiview Object Tracking System

Abstract: In this paper we present an efficient approach to building a panoramic video from mutiview cameras and to tracking objects. The proposed panoramic video creation module consists of two functions: (i) selecting four quasi-feature points in two adjacent frames acquired by corresponding multiple cameras and (ii) mosaicing the two images. Four pairs of selected quasi-feature points play a role of similarity reference in registering two adjacent frames. The mosaicing step uses the direct linear transformation (DLT) algorithm. The proposed tracking algorithm uses the active contour model (ASM), which is robust against partial occlusion. The proposed tracking module consists of four functions: (i) landmark point assignment, (ii) principal component analysis (PCA), (iii) modeling of local structure, and (iv) model fitting. While most conventional panoramic image creation methods are pixel-based, the proposed feature-based method provides more accurate tracking result. In the experiment, the created panoramic images exhibit high quality, which enables robust, real-time video tracking.
A Fast Multi-reference Frame Selection Algorithm for Multiview Video Coding

Abstract: Multiview video coding (MVC) plays an important role in three-dimensional video applications. Joint Video Team developed a joint multiview video model (JMVM) with multi-reference frame technology. Motion and disparity estimation are employed in multi-reference frame technology to provide better rate distortion performance. However, the process of searching blocks with variable sizes for motion and disparity estimation in multi-reference frames significantly increases the computational complexity. After analyzing the statistical features of multi-reference frames in MVC, this paper proposes a fast multi-reference frame selection algorithm based on a dynamic threshold technology correlated with the types of frames. All views of prediction structure in JMVM are categorized into three types, that is, the basic view without inter-view reference relation, the first layer views that only refer anchor frame from upper view, the second layer views that need to refer the basic view and the first layer views. Furthermore, all frames in MVC prediction structure are divided into three categories, the anchor frame without any reference, non-anchor frame in the base view and the first layer view, and the non-anchor frame in other views. Dynamic threshold technique is given to terminate the process of searching multi-reference frames early. The proposed algorithm also reduces the useless candidate reference frames by filtering out those reference frames that are less likely to contain the best matched results and achieves significant speed-up. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve 50.13% ~ 72.19% reduction of encoding time in comparison with JMVM7.0, while the proposed algorithm hardly influences the rate distortion performance of MVC.
Luminance and Chrominance Correction for Multi-view Video Using Overlapped Local Histogram Matching

Abstract: Significant luminance and chrominance discrepancies between the different camera views can often be observed in multiview video sequences.In this paper,a luminance and chrominance correction algorithm based on partially overlapped local histogram matching is proposed.In the histogram matching method, a mapping function is established by matching the histogram of the original image to that of the reference image.Then the mapping function is applied to the original image to obtain the corrected image.There are two branches of histogram matching according to the mapping function used: global histogram matching and adaptive local histogram matching.Global histogram matching uses the same mapping function for the whole image,so its performance is relatively low.Adaptive local histogram matching can calibrate the luminance and chrominance effectively by using the local histogram for each pixel,but the computational complexity is very high.In the proposed partially overlapped local histogram matching method,the same mapping function is applied to a block of pixels.A conditional block reduction filter is utilized on the boundaries of all the adjacent blocks to eliminate the blocking effect.The proposed algorithm can be used as a preprocessing tool in the multiview video system.Experiment results show that it can improve the performance of the multiview video encoder.
Multiview Video Rate Control Scheme Based on Human Stereo Visual Feature

Abstract: This paper proposed a multiview video rate control scheme based on human stereo visual feature.First,the new quantitative measure for stereo video quality is introduced.Then,the bit allocation scheme is derived on the basis of this measure.Finally,the macroblock quantization parameters are modified according to the quantization parameter of the neighboring macroblock on the purpose of eliminating block effect in stereo video.The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the stereo video quality and obtain quite stable rate.

Abstract: In this paper, a new method for reference view selection in multiview disparity estimation is presented, based on view similarity determination. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity in the multiview video coding with the same quality.
Fast Algorithms for Inter-view Prediction of Multiview Video Coding

Abstract: The compression efficiency and complexity should be simultaneously taken into consideration in Multiview Video Coding (MVC). In order to reduce the complexity while maintaining the efficiency of MVC, we proposed in this paper two algorithms called Adaptive Search Region Adjustment (ASRA) and Adaptive Selection of Inter-view References (ASIR). In ASRA, we simplified the exiting method to obtain the global disparity vector (GDV), using which the correlations between the disparity vector (DV) and predicted vector were exploited. The statistical property of the absolute difference value of $DV$ and GDV was analyzed and the results were applied to adjust the search range dynamically. In ASIR, we first used the prediction information of the lower temporal layer in the hierarchical B picture prediction structure to reduce the number of inter-view reference pictures, and then applied the results of reference selection after inter_16×16 prediction mode decision to revise our method. The experimental results demonstrate that the algorithms suggested in this paper can reduce the computation up to 25% with little decrease of compression efficiency.
Multiview Video Coding Scheme Based on Disparity Estimation Algorithm

Abstract: Multiview video coding is a key technology of stereo video,and disparity estimation is the most popular algorithm of current multiview video coding schemes.The theory of disparity estimation algorithm is first investigated,and several typical coding techniques are analyzed in detail.Then a novel multiview coding scheme is proposed which is based on hierarchical B pictures and correlation property of viewpoints.Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is efficient.
Reference View Selection Based on Characteristics of Image Block and Similarity Measurement in Multi-view Disparity Estimation

Abstract: Disparity estimation is used to eliminate redundancy among different views in multi-view video coding in order to obtain high compression efficiency. In this paper, characteristics of image block are extracted by using fast Walsh transformation, and a new method for reference view selection in multi-view disparity estimation is presented, based on the characteristic vector of image block and its similarity measurement. Experimental resuhs show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity in multi-view video coding with almost the same quality of reconstructed images.
A Random Access Based Evaluation Model for Multiview Video Coding Schemes

Abstract: In this paper,evaluation function of MVC(multiview video coding)random accessibility for decoder and server is first proposed based on the methods from random graph theory and hyper-space.Furthermore,a non-linear multi-purpose programming model for MVC performance evaluation is also proposed according to the constraints from practical network bandwidth,restrictions of interaction and other problems.Based on this model, optimal coding strategies for different MVC schemes under variant performance constraints are discussed.It is found that random accessibility of MVC scheme can be improved via this non-linear multi-purpose programming model.
