Abstract: In the light of DSC, electronic microprobe and X-ray diffration analyses of the melt-spinning ribbons and the structures of liquid hypoeutectic Al-7%Si, euteclic Al-12.7%Si and hypereutectic A1-18%Si alloys have been investigated. The results show that the Al-Si clusters in liquid hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy, the Si-Si clusters in liquid eutectic and hypereutectic Al-Si alloys exist at low temperatures, however, the size of clusters decreases gradurally with increasing temperature. This process in which inhomogeneous liquid turns into homogeneous one happens in a range of temperatures.

Abstract: Containerless treatment of Bi-58.5at%Ga hypermonotectic alloy is successfully performed with acoustic levitation technique. Under acoustic levitation condition, the second phase (Ga) distributes almost homogeneously in solidification sample, opposite to macrosegregation in solidification sample under conventional condition. Stokes motion of the second liquid droplet (Ga) is significantly restrained under acoustic levitation condition. The analyses indicate that the melt vibration in the gravity direction forced by acoustic field can induce steady flow around the second liquid droplet, which influences droplet shape during its moving upward and consequently restrains Stokes motion velocity of the second liquid droplet.
Fabrication of bulk glassy Zr41Ti14Ni8Cu12.5Be22.5Fe2 alloy by water quenching

Abstract: A glassy Zr41Ti14Ni8Cu12.5Be22.5Fe2 rod with a diameter of 9 mm was successfully produced by water quenching. The effects of iron addition on thermal stability and hardness of Zr41Ti14Ni8Cu12.5Be22.5Fe2 bulk amorphous alloy were investigated by XR D, DSC and microhardness test. It is found that the full annealing would enhance the strength of the alloy significantly. The cause of the increase in hardness was analyzed and the formation mechanisms of the bulk amorphous alloy are discussed.

Abstract: An attempt was made on applying the Wilson equation to predict the thermodynamic proper- ties of ternary liquid alloys.The activity of each component in ternary liquid alloys was found to be conveniently calculated from the equation with the related binary bimolecular interaction parameters.The calculated values are in fair agreement with experimental data,and are veri- fied to be reliable by the criterion of classical thermodynamics.

Abstract: The deviation from ideal mixture behavior and concentration dependent symmetry in thermodynamic and structural properties of K-Na liquid alloy is investigated within a simple statistical model. The concentration dependence of the free energy of mixing, heat of mixing, entropy of mixing, concentration fluctuation in the long wavelength limit, Warren-Cowley short range order parameter, ratio of diffusion coefficients of Potassium-sodium alloy at 384 K and activity of the components has got special attention to show a tendency of like atom pairing in the mixture.
Understanding atomic-scale phase separation of liquid Fe-Cu alloy

Abstract: Using liquid Fe60Cu40 alloy as a model, the structure of liquid Fe-Cu alloy systems is investigated in the temperature range 1200–2200 K, covering a large metastable undercooled regime, to understand the phase separation of liquid Fe-Cu alloys on the atomic scale. The total pair distribution functions (PDFs) indicate that liquid Fe60Cu40 alloy is ordered in the short range and disordered in the long range. If the atom types are ignored, the total atom number densities and PDFs demonstrate that the atoms are distributed homogenously in the liquid alloy. However, the segregation of Fe and Cu atoms is very obvious with decreasing temperature. The partial PDFs and coordination numbers show that the Cu and Fe atoms are not apt to get together on the atomic scale at low temperatures; this will lead to large fluctuations and phase separation in liquid Fe-Cu alloy.
Activity measurement of Ga in liquid Ga-Pb alloys by EMF method with zirconia solid electrolyte

Abstract: EMF measurement of the electrochemical cell with zirconia as solid electrolyte was performed to determine the gallium activity from 950 to 1150K in the entire composition range of liquid Ga-Pb alloys. In the whole concentration range, activity of Ga shows moderately positive deviations from ideality, and activity of Pb which is derived by Gibbs- Duhem equation shows also positive deviation from ideality. These are compared with published data obtained by different experimental methods.
Solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-10Ti and Fe-25Ti alloys

Abstract: Purpose: of the study was to determine the physicochemical characteristics of thermodynamic equilibrium in the liquid metal-gas system, where the liquid metal was a liquid Fe-Ti alloy, and the reaction gas was always a mixture of nitrogen and argon with preset chemical composition.Design/methodology/approach: In the experimental studies, the levitation metal melting technique was used, which enabled, on the one hand, the liquid metal-gas thermodynamic system appropriate to the purpose to be fabricated and, on the other hand, precise measurements to be carried out within a wide nitrogen partial pressure range from 0.0005 to 0.070 atm and in the appropriate range of metal temperature variations (1973-2273 K). The solidification of a 1 g-mass sample at a rate higher than 1000 K/s assured the complete nitrogen fixation in the solidified sample compared to the liquid-state sample.Findings: It has been established in the study by experimentally measuring the nitrogen concentration in the liquid Fe-Ti alloy with varying titanium contents under hyperbaric conditions that the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Ti alloys increases with increasing partial pressure of nitrogen in the gaseous phase, and with increasing liquid metal temperature and titanium content of the metal.Research limitations/implications: The study has found that when the intensive parameters increase above the critical values, the non-metallic phase forming on the levitating metal drop surface is a titanium nitride film, as demonstrated by X-ray analysis. Such samples were eliminated from the characteristics of nitrogen solubility in the homogeneous metallic phase.Practical implications: The collected data on the thermodynamic quantities of the liquid Fe-Ti-N alloy has enriched the autonomous thermodynamic database containing information about liquid alloys of iron with nitrogen, which is being built at Czestochowa University of Technology.Originality/value: The developed formulas seem to be valuable, because - as the relevant literature indicates - the Fe-Ti system has not been examined so far under such extreme thermodynamic conditions.
