Shielding Experiments Under JASMIN Collaboration at Fermilab(IV) - Measurement and Analyses of High-Energy Neutron Spectra in the Anti-Proton Target Station
JASMIN Collaboration
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: Neutron spectra in high-energy region between 1 and 100-MeV in the shield configuration of the anti-proton target station and a 120-GeV proton beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) were determined using the reaction rate data obtained with the multi-foil activation method. Two kinds of methods were employed for the determination of neutron spectra: one is the fitting method which is newly developed in this work, another is the unfolding method with SAND-II code. The calculations were performed using the PHITS. From the comparison between the calculated and experimental neutron spectra, it concluded that the PHITS can be used for shielding design of high-energy proton accelerators.
Studies of muon-induced radioactivity at NuMI
David J. Boehnlein, for the JASMIN Collaboration
Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1063/1.3399339
Abstract: The JASMIN Collaboration has studied the production of radionuclides by muons in the muon alcoves of the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. Samples of aluminum and copper are exposed to the muon field and counted on HpGe detectors when removed to determine their content of radioactive isotopes. We compare the results to MARS simulations and discuss the radiological implications for neutrino factories and muon colliders.
High Precision Bidirectional Heat Pulsed Flow Sensor  [PDF]
Jasmin Radadia, Maher E. Rizkalla
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2014.73015
Abstract:

In this work we have designed and simulated a thermal bi-directional integrated circuit mass flow sensor. The approach used here was an extension to the gas flow model given by Mayer and Lechner [1]. The design features high precision response received from analog integrated circuits. An established mathematical model for the heat flow equation including CFD parameters were used within COMSOL simulation (COMSOL Multiphysics, Sweden). Heat pulses of 55°C for a period of nearly 120 seconds and 50% duty cycles were applied as thermal sources to the flowstream. The boundary conditions of the heat equations at the solid (heating element) fluid interface were set up in the software for the thermal response. The hardware design included one heating element and two sensing elements were used to detect the bi-directional mass flow. Platinum sensors were used due to their linear characteristics within 0°C to 100°C range, and their high temperature coefficient (0.00385 Ω/°C). Polyimide thin film heater was used as the element due to its high throughput and good thermal efficiency. Two bridge circuits were used to sense the temperature distribution in the vicinity of the sensing elements.

The Relation of Sleep, Distress, and Coping Strategies—What Male and Female Students Can Learn from Each Other?  [PDF]
Jasmin Faber, Angelika A. Schlarb
Health (Health) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/health.2016.813136
Abstract: Sleep quality, distress, and coping strategies differ between male and female students. However, effects of gender on their relation have not been evaluated. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to confirm gender differences on sleep quality, chronic distress, and various coping strategies, as well as to examine gender differences in their relation to each other. A cross-sectional online study including several sleep-related self-report measures was completed by 6379 German students. After excluding all cases with missing data on the variables gender, psychiatric disorder, and medication, the final sample consisted of 5889 students with a mean age of 23.10 years (SD = 2.67) for men and 22.64 years (SD = 2.56) for women. Data from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress, and the Proactive Coping Inventory were analyzed. Results showed that women reported to have a poorer sleep quality, a higher level of chronic distress, and use social support more often than men. The hypothesized model revealed gender differences on the model level. However, these differences only occurred between avoidance coping and distress, as well as between various coping strategies. The biological gender influenced each of those three variables, but barely their relation to each other. Participants’ gender role might explain gender differences in coping strategies and their impact on distress. Furthermore, the type of stressor and subjective or objective measured sleep parameters might show more gender differences on this relation. Conclusively, gender-specific trainings or interventions are not necessary, however, gender differences should be considered during the implementation process.
Communication by unvoiced speech: the role of whispering
Cirillo, Jasmin;
Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37652004000200034
Abstract: most studies on whispering deal with its production and perception, neglecting its communicative role. i have focused on this, especially some social and psychobiological objectives. i have combined a general inquiry into the use of unvoiced speech with stimulus-response experiments on particular signal properties. (1) analyses of answers to queries revealed that judgments about whispering depend on the social contexts. in the private domain it plays a clearly positive role, but in the public domain it is more problematical. two causative factors were identified as relevant: (a) an 'ingroup' function of whispering which could induce negative 'outgroup' effects in co-listeners, and (b) a psychobiological component of whispering which could affect the auditory vigilance of co-listeners who were not addressed personally by the signaling, but often wanted to understand a whispered message. (2) analyses of experimental data confirmed the relevance of these factors. additionally, they showed that unvoiced speech has a limited transmission range, and is easily masked by background noise. taken together, the results suggest that whispering is explained best as a close-distance signal adapted for private use among partners.
Organisationskulturen neu betrachtet: Ein interpretativ-ethnologischer Blick auf Unternehmensnarrative Redefining Organizational Cultures: An Interpretative Anthropological Approach to Corporate Narratives Hacia una redefinición de culturas de la organización: Un planteamiento interpretativo antropológico en cuanto a las narrativas empresariales

URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0901440 Hardly any management theory nowadays fails to take culture's influence on today's organizations into account. At the very foundation lies the belief that the intercultural boundary can be determined externally—by etic view. In my paper I show how much emic organizational reality differs from etic view. Hereby, I refer to two years of fieldwork that I conducted in a global high-tech company at sites in Germany, Austria and India. I choose this approach to trace culture as an open process of sense-making in practice. Through interpretative anthropological means, I identified several discourses of collective identity that were constructed narratively—often regardless of the presumed etic border of "Germans" vs. "Indians." In summary, this paper makes the following contributions: Firstly, it shows how emic and etic categorizations of the cultural other can differ in a complex environment. Secondly, it looks in depth into the emic categorizations of "the Other" and how they are constructed narratively. Thirdly, it draws conclusions for the field of intercultural communication. Abstract: The international conference on "Methodologies of the System" provided an inventory of empirical research informed by systems theory. In eight parallel workshops on topics such as "Organization," "Interaction," and "Semantics," more than twenty different empirical research projects were discussed. The workshops were framed by eight keynote lectures on "Methodology and Systems Theory," "Theory as Methodology," "Method and Methodology," as well as "Methodological Imports." In this conference report I will summarize the main topics of the conference and connect them with current approaches to empirical research with systems theory. The following questions will be answered: Which position do studies inspired by systems theory take within the sociological discussions about methods? Which analytical advancements are possible and necessary? Does a "unity" of systems theoretical research exist? Did the conference produce an appearance of unity, which does not represent the plurality of different approaches? Systems theoretical approaches seek access to empirical fields in very different ways. In the process, those approaches seem particularly productive which focus on the empirical interest and not on the faithfulness to their own theory. Given that different approaches presented at this conference produced sound arguments about how to deal with empirical data, it would be counterproductive to implement a rigid canon of method systems theoretical research. The commensurability of a specific method or methodology needs to be extracted from the empirical case and its needs. The conference showed that systems theoretical research and empirical concerns mate. However, it showed as well the misunderstandings that this approach possibly feeds by its terminology and self-descriptions. URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs1101134 In this study Sebastian ZIEGAUS analyzes the communicative construction of scientific practice. With developments in new media and the internet, new means of interaction in research systems evolve. ZIEGAUS's interest lies in the interaction between researcher and research object. He points to a lack of methodological reflection regarding interactional and medial effects in the social sciences. He thus argues that the self-description of social sciences must change through the implementation of the ideal of "communicative social research." ZIEGAUS does not adopt the perspective of a social researcher, but that of a theoretically interested communication scientist—giving rise to both the merits and shortcomings of the book. The empirical part of the study includes a creative exploration of the epistemological foundations of various social theories and their handling of complexity. However, his call for the social sciences to unite under the flag of "communicative social research" is somewhat unconvincing, and fails to tie in satisfactorily with the empirical findings.
