Recent developments in fiber optic spectral white-light interferometry

Abstract: Recent developments in spectral white-light interferometry (WLI) are reviewed. Firstly, the techniques for obtaining optical spectrum are introduced. Secondly, some novel measurement techniques are reviewed, including the improved peak-to-peak WLI, improved wavelength-tracking WLI, Fourier transform WLI, and 3 × 3 coupler based WLI. Furthermore, a hybrid measurement for the intensity-type sensors, interferometric sensors, and fiber Bragg grating sensors is achieved. It is shown that these developments have assisted in the progress of WLI.
Recognition of Bragg Wavelength Disturbed by Time Delay of Fiber Length in Prepositive Tunable Filter  [PDF]

The wavelength shift in fiber Bragg grating does not depend directly on the total light levels, losses in the connecting fibers and couplers, or source power. However, if the tunable Fabry-Perot filter is place on the end of incident fiber, the detected time delay of modulation light is occurred due to the unmatch between the scanning time and light transmission time in the transmission fiber. Consequently, the detected peak wavelength shifts with the length of transmission fiber. Thus, the peak wavelength shift effect of Bragg reflective light transmitted in fiber with different fiber length can be obvious in the demodulator with a prepositive tunable Fabry-Perot filter. The experiment indicates the shift rates of 0.109 - 0.126 nm/km increase approximately linearly with the original peak wavelength of 1532.917 - 1560.300 nm at the fiber length of 0 - 6 km. To certify the consistency of measurement data, the criterion correction is introduced. By using the differential method of two fiber Bragg gratings with an optical path, the differential worth is compensated from the disturbance modulated by the time delay of fiber length.

Abstract: 提出一种简单的理论模型,并通过数值模拟详细研究了可调谐光纤环形腔激光器的输出特性随掺铒光纤长度、输出耦合比、抽运功率、腔内损耗等参量的变化关系.理论分析得到,通过参量优化可以实现在铒离子增益范围内超过130nm带宽(1500—1630nm)的激光输出.实验获得了100nm带宽(15185—16185nm)的可调谐激光输出,激光器输出功率高,信噪比在大部分可调范围内高于60dB,实验结果与理论分析符合得较好
Swept Fiber Laser Based Fiber Optic Sensor Demodulator

Abstract: A fiber optic sensing demodulation system based on a swept fiber laser was reported.A HCN gas cell was adopted as an embedded wavelength calibrator for the swept laser.The relation between the scanning voltage applied to the fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FF-PTF) and the lasing wavelength was given out by a three order nonlinear fitting.The scanning voltage and multi-channel spectroscopy signal from sensors were sampled simultaneously and calibrated in real time.The interrogation wavelength resolution of 1.4pm and the long term repeatability of 3.2 pm were achieved.Demodulation test results for FBG and F-P sensors show that the system is capable of measuring the reflected peak wavelength of FBG and cavity length of fiber EFPI sensor with high accuracy.

Abstract: The equidistantly spaced multi-passbands of a Fabry-Perot ITU filter are used as an efficient multi-wavelength reference for fiber Bragg grating sensor demodulation. To compensate for the nonlinear wavelength tuning effect in the FBG sensor demodulator, a polynomial fitting algorithm was applied to the temporal peaks of the wavelength-scanned ITU filter. The fitted wavelength values are assigned to the peak locations of the FBG sensor reflections, obtaining constant accuracy, regardless of the wavelength scan range and frequency. A linearity error of about 0.18% against a reference thermocouple thermometer was obtained with the suggested method.

Analysis of Liquid Crystal Tunable Febry-Perot Etalon Filters

Abstract: The influence of the reflectance phase shift of the reflector on the peak wavelength in a liquid crystal Febry-Perot etalon (LCFPE) filter is discussed. In the tunable LCFPE filter, the peak wavelength is selected by adjusting the applied external voltage. The peak wavelength shifts due to the wavelength-dependent phase shift of the reflector. A set of simple formulas which can give quickly the phase shift are derived. The simulation results indicate that the reflective phase shift can not be ignored in the design of a LCFPE filter as it plays an important role in determining the peak wavelength and the applied voltage of the device. Using these formulas, a tunable LCFPE filter in the optical communication C-Band is designed.
