‘Signs’ of Change: Chinese English, Hybridity, and Public Media
Cassel Busse
The English Languages : History, Diaspora, Culture , 2011,
Abstract: This essay examines the issues surrounding hybridity, language and identity in twenty-first century China. This nation has had centuries-long contact with the English language through trade and commerce, producing a commonly used pidgin known as “Chinese English,” or more colloquially, “Chinglish.” However, the last three decades have seen a change in both national tongue and national identity with China’s rise from ‘developing country’ to ‘super-power,’ rivalling European and North American nations in terms of economic and political status. In the effort of fulfilling China’s new role as a globalized and modernized state, the Chinese government has launched a series of initiatives to standardize English and eradicate Chinese English from public media––a move that has drawn concern for many Chinese residents about the nation’s investment in a foreign language and the concomitant potential for a “hybrid” national identity. Using the language debates surrounding the Beijing Summer Olympics (2008) and the Shanghai World Expo (2010), this essay examines the rising division between those that are for the assimilation of English into Chinese culture and those that are against it, a division that I argue exemplifies the implications and impacts of globalization on the linguistic identity of a rapidly changing nation.
THE PHRASEOLOGY OF PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH
Peter Howarth
International Journal of English Studies (IJES) , 2006, DOI: 10.6018/ijes.6.1.46891
Abstract: In Howarth 2002 a limited amount of data was presented for preliminary analysis of the phraseology of international press conferences. Tliat study focused on the distinction between spontaneous and scripted spoken English and examined whether these styles of speech could be correlated with differences in phraseological performance. The current study broadens the scope of this research and aims to investigate in more detail the nature of the language used in public international settings between native- and non-native speakers. It will draw on a corpus of approximately 2.5 million words of transcribed press conferences, containing large numbers of exchanges between native and non-native spokespeople and journalists. 'The press conferences have been conducted during the last eight years in Former Yugoslavia and have the common subject matter of peace-keeping and security. In addition to using a variety of corpus analyses (e.g. keywords, recurrent word combinations, fixed phrases), the study will attempt to deepen our understanding of this genre.
Contrasting Specific English Corpora: Language Variation
María Luisa Carrió Pastor
International Journal of English Studies (IJES) , 2009, DOI: 10.6018/ijes.1.1.99611
Abstract: The scientific community has traditionally considered technical English as neutral and objective, able to transmit ideas and research in simple sentences and specialized vocabulary. Nevertheless, global communication and intense information delivery have produced a range of different ways of knowledge transmission. Although technical English is considered an objective way to transmit science, writers of academic papers use some words or structures with different frequency in the same genre. As a consequence of this, contrastive studies about the use of second languages have been increasingly attracting scholarly attention. In this research, we evidence that variation in language production is a reality and can be proved contrasting corpora written by native writers of English and by non-native writers of English. The objectives of this paper are first to detect language variation in a technical English corpus; second, to demonstrate that this finding evidences the parts of the sentence that are more sensitive to variation; finally, it also evidences the non-standardisation of technical English. In order to fulfil these objectives, we analysed a corpus of fifty scientific articles written by native speakers of English and fifty scientific articles written by non-native speakers of English. The occurrences were classified and counted in order to detect the most common variations. Further analysis indicated that the variations were caused by mother tongue interference in virtually all cases, although meaning was only very rarely obscured. These findings suggest that the use of certain patterns and expressions originating from L1 interference should be considered as correct as standard English.
China English and ELT for English Majors
Mingjuan Zhang
English Language Teaching , 2008, DOI: 10.5539/elt.v1n2p143
Abstract: This paper is a general study of one of varieties of English—China English and its influence on English Language Teaching (ELT) for English majors. The status of English as an International language breaks the situation in which British English or American English is the sole standard. English becomes World Englishes, taking on a plural form, which include many varieties of English with nativized cultural, political and economical characteristics. Researchers in China believe that China English as a variety of English has been objectively in existence and become a lingua franca. It consolidates the cultural identity of the Chinese speakers of English, enriches the multiple identities of English and plays an important role in promoting Chinese culture internationally. For teachers of English majors, it presents challenges to their traditional view of language teaching.
A Methodological Probe to Aeronautical English Vocabulary Instruction  [PDF]
Aiguo Wang
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2011.12007
Abstract: Students’ knowledge of words impacts their achievement in all areas of the curriculum because words are necessary for communicating the content. Aeronautical English vocabulary is a major difficulty which impedes students’ progress in EAP (English for Academic Purposes) learning (usually conducted in native English countries) or ESP (English for Specific Purposes). The paper introduces readers to the status quo of aeronautical English vocabulary teaching in P. R. China and some specifics of it in classroom activities so that EAP/ESP teachers can have a better idea of ESL teaching with regard to width and depth of aeronautical English vocabulary knowledge.

English Sentence Recognition Based on HMM and Clustering  [PDF]
Xinguang Li, Jiahua Chen, Zhenjiang Li
American Journal of Computational Mathematics (AJCM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajcm.2013.31005
Abstract:

For English sentences with a large amount of feature data and complex pronunciation changes contrast to words, there are more problems existing in Hidden Markov Model (HMM), such as the computational complexity of the Viterbi algorithm and mixed Gaussian distribution probability. This article explores the segment-mean algorithm for dimensionality reduction of speech feature parameters, the clustering cross-grouping algorithm and the HMM grouping algorithm, which are proposed for the implementation of the speaker-independent English sentence recognition system based on HMM and clustering. The experimental result shows that, compared with the single HMM, it improves not only the recognition rate but also the recognition speed of the system.
