Evaluation of single nucleotide polymorphisms in microRNAs (hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 C/T) from Brazilian women with breast cancer

Abstract: Background Emerging evidence has shown that miRNAs are involved in human carcinogenesis as tumor suppressors or oncogenes. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in pre-miRNAs may affect the processing and therefore, influence the expression of mature miRNAs. Previous studies generated conflicting results when reporting association between the hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 common polymorphism and breast cancer. Methods This study evaluated the hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 SNP in 388 breast cancer cases and 388 controls in Brazilian women. Polymorphism was determined by real-time PCR; control and experimental groups were compared through statistical analysis using the X2 or Fisher’s exact tests. Results The analysis of the SNPs frequencies showed a significant difference between the groups (BC and CT) in regards to genotype distribution (χ2: p = 0.024); the homozygous variant (CC) was more frequent in the CT than in the BC group (p = 0.009). The presence of the hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 C/T polymorphism was not associated with histological grades (p = 0.522), axillary lymph node positive status (p = 0.805), or clinical stage (p = 0.670) among the breast cancer patients. Conclusions The results of this study indicated that the CC polymorphic genotype is associated with a decreased risk of BC and the presence of the T allele was significantly associated with an increased risk of BC.
Genetic polymorphism of GSTM1 in women with breast cancer and interact with reproductive history and several clinical pathologies

Abstract: due to the conflicting results regarding the association between breast cancer and the gstm1 null mutation, our aim was to research this association in a brazilian population and correlations with smoking, reproductive history and several clinical pathologies. a case-control study was performed on 105 women with breast cancer and 278 controls. extraction of dna was accomplished according to the protocol of the gfx? kit and polymorphism analysis by the pcr technique. the control and experimental groups were compared and statistical analysis assessed by x2 or fisher's exact test. the deletion in the gstm1 gene in the breast cancer group had a prevalence of 32 (30.4%) individuals with the presence of null mutation. in the control group, the null mutation was present in 104 (37.4%) women. upon comparison of the two groups, no statistically significant difference of the gstm1 gene was observed, with an odds ratio (or) of 0.74, 95%, confidence interval (ci) 0.45 - 1.20, p = 0.277. the results conclusively show that single gene gstm1 polymorphisms do not confer a substantial risk of breast cancer to its carriers. furthermore, in this study no correlation was found between gsts and smoking, reproductive history and several clinical pathologies with respect to cancer risk.

Abstract: this paper aims at understanding the complex and dynamic relationships between the public policy for higher education in lula's administration, in what regards the project university for all (prouni), and its connection with fiscal policy and financing by way of tributary renouncement. it also intends to analyze the conditions of access of poor students and discuss the program as a democratizing public policy. in this context, the civil society approval in search of graduation certificate allied to the pressure of private representatives associations. the attempt to regulate the system and obtain return on the fiscal renouncement allowed to philanthropic institutions was restricted by the legal text, which evolved toward the slackening of the state framework. the author concludes that the obstacle to democratization is the lack of public and free places. to date, the measures aimed at increasing the federal sector are still insufficient to revert this perverse situation.

Abstract: this article brings the main results of a study called "an investigation of environmental education in five states and a biome in brazil" carried out in four networks of environmental education. the study was commissioned by the brazilian network of environmental education, and was concluded in november 2004; it was based on data of the diagnostics performed by the following networks: state of s?o paulo network - repea (sp), southern network - reasul (pr, sc, and rs), aguapé network (mt and ms/pantanal biome), and acre network - raea (ac). they all fed data into the brazilian system of environmental information of the ministry for the environment (sibea/mma) in the 2001-2003 period. the objectives of the study were to present a systematization of common categories researched in each network, to discuss the possibility of comparing the features of environmental education for the regions researched on the basis of the consolidation of the data gathered, and finally to highlight challenges, limitations and opportunities perceived in the development of environmental education. the analysis of the data emphasizes aspects such as: the institutions offering activities of environmental education are mainly public and of the civil society and, on a small scale, private; institutions of environmental education, educators/experts, and researchers are concentrated in southeastern brazil; activities are mostly of awareness/mobilization, followed by capacitation in environmental education; the concept of environmental education is not understood evenly across networks; there are more projects than programs of environmental education; there is a predominance of short duration courses in the training of environmental educators. the final considerations of the text analyze these tendencies in the light of the political and educational contexts, and suggestions are made for further reflection on the relations between environmental education and its social insertion.

Abstract: the article discusses transformations in the contemporary public sphere and the emergence of new types of political action, which are related to the creation of a political and pedagogical environmental field. the political environmental action may be considered as part of the counterculture and the new left movements. therefore, it may be taken as one of the expressions of the crisis of modernity, which is redefining the role of social action in terms of individual, private, public, ethical and aesthetic action. this dilemma exposes the conflicts which constitute modernity and its emancipating project. in the face of this problematic, some analyses emphasise the dissolution and the decline of politics whilst others underline the emergence of a new way of doing politics. finally, the article explores the aftermaths of these social changes in the educational field, especially in environmental education, which is concerned with the construction of an ecological self.

Abstract: this study reports on an ethnographic investigation about the interaction between a teacher and her very young learners (vyl) in the english as a foreign language (fl) classroom. in order to carry out this investigation, data were collected in a private kindergarten school, by means of video recordings of classes and field notes from the teacher and from an observer. as ellis (1997) states as caretakers tend to modify the way they speak to children when these ones are learning the mother language, so teachers do modify their speech when communicating with learners. the results of this study may contribute to make teachers of vyl aware of the role of teachers' discourse as a facilitator of understanding in interactions in the fl classroom.
