PARODI,GIOVANNI;
RLA. Revista de lingüística teórica y aplicada , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-48832008000100006

Collocation lists as instruments for metaphor detection in corpora
Sardinha, Tony Berber;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502006000200002
Abstract: this paper reports a study on the use of collocation lists as instruments for detecting metaphors in corpora. a collocation list contains the collocations for selected words in corpora together with concordances for those words. as corpora become more available to metaphor researchers, there is a growing need for developing ways to gain access to as much data as the corpus can offer. the research described here has hopefully come some way toward meeting the challenges of developing tools for metaphor corpus research. results suggest that the collocation lists seem to be a good pre-processing instrument for corpus research of metaphor, despite accuracy problems.

Ilha do Desterro , 2008,
Abstract: Since the mid 90s corpora has become very important for computational linguistics. This paper offers a survey of how they are currently used in different fields of the discipline, with particular emphasis on anaphora and coreference resolution, automatic summarisation and term extraction. Their influence on other fields is also briefly discussed. Since the mid 90s corpora has become very important for computational linguistics.
—Educational Implications and Future Perspectives
 [PDF]

Christopher Horn
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2015.51009
Abstract: This essay will offer an introduction to the long-debated issue of diglossia in the Arabic-speaking world, together with an overview of some of the effects it brings about within the Arab society against the background of the governing Islamic creed. After a definition of the issue, backed by the most relevant, related academic literature, a brief overview will be offered of the social setting in which this situation has perpetuated itself to this day. The author will then proceed to assess the impact of diglossia on Arab youth, nowadays, with an eye on educational concerns, and will conclude with a tentative speculation on the future of Arabic as a language, in hopes to inspire further academic endeavor.
Modals in Brazilian Advanced EFL Learners’ Compositions: A Corpus-Based Investigation1
Viana,Vander;
Profile Issues in Teachers` Professional Development , 2006,
Abstract: corpus linguistics has become a major trend in applied linguistics since the second half of the 20th century due to computing facilities. nowadays teachers can research and assess their students’ production by means of compiling learner corpora. this article describes how this technique was used to investigate the usage of modals in the writing of advanced efl learners studying at private language schools in brazil. when the research corpus is compared to the academic prose register studied by biber et al. (1999), the divergence becomes apparent. the findings, thus, suggest that subjects write in a non-proficient way, which runs counter to previous expectations.
HACIA LA CONSTITUCIóN DE UN CORPUS DIACRóNICO DEL ESPA?OL DE CHILE
CONTRERAS SEITZ,MANUEL;
RLA. Revista de lingüística teórica y aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-48832009000200007
Abstract: the conformation of hispanic diachronic corpora (spanish and hispano-american) in order to place the framework of the cordech (corpus diacrónico del espa?ol de chile) is described and analyzed in this paper. the work shows an intersection between traditional disciplines, such as the philolology and the paleography, with linguistic disciplines that have been revitalized in the last years, such as corpus linguistics, in order to shape a chilean spanish diachronic corpus. in addition, the criteria of corpus formation is presented in this text (chronological, documentary selection and transcription, diatopics and register varieties); in the same way, some aspects of corpora automatization and the implications and projections for its analysis is discussed here. finally, the criteria for corpus labelling are reviewed, according to the text encoding initiative (tei), adopted for the rae in the prontuario de marcación sgml, used for the corde (spanish language diachronic corpus), together with showing some examples of these aspects, for which the cooktop 2.5 xml/xslt editor was used.
METODOLOGíA PROTOCOLIZADA DE COMPILACIóN DE UN CORPUS DE SEGUROS DE VIAJES: ASPECTOS DE DISE?O Y REPRESENTATIVIDAD
SEGHIRI,MIRIAM;
RLA. Revista de lingüística teórica y aplicada , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-48832011000200002
Abstract: although the term "representativeness" is a key concept when defining a corpus, it is one of the most controversial aspects among researchers as regards the ambiguity inherent in the qualitative and quantitative connotations (giouli & piperidis, 2002 and coris/codis, 2011). for this reason, in the following pages, we shall present a systematic methodology -divided in four steps- for corpus compilation based on electronic resources available on the internet, an essential part of corpus linguistics applied to specialized translation, and it will guarantee the quality of the corpus. the methodology will be illustrated through the example of the creation of a virtual corpus of travel insurance, whose representativeness from a quantitative point of view will subsequently be determined by using a computer programme specifically designed for this purpose, called recor.
