Abstract: Flowering in higher plants is controlled by both the internal and environmental cues. InArabidopsis, several major genetic loci have been defined as the key switches to control flowering. TheFlowering Locus C (FLC) gene has been shown in the autonomous pathway to inhibit the vegetative-to-reproductive transition.FLC appears to be repressed byFlowering Locus D (FLD), which encodes a component of the histone deacetylase complex. Here we report the identification and characterization of a new mutant allelefld-5. Genetic analysis indicates thatfld-5 (in the Wassilewskija background) is allelic to the previously characterizedfld-3 andfld-4 (in the Colombia-0 background). Genetic and molecular analyses reveal thatfld-5 carries a frame-shift mutation, resulting in a premature termination of theFLD open reading frame. TheFLC expression is remarkably increased infld-5, which presumably attributes to the extremely delayed flowering phenotype of the mutant.
Cytokinin signal transduction: Known simplicity and unknown complexity

Abstract: Cytokinin plays a critical role in plant growth and development by regulating cell divisions and cell differentiation. Recent studies suggest that cytokinin signaling is presumably mediated by a two-component system analogous to those found in bacteria and fungi, which transduces an external signalvia a phosphorelay from the plasma membrane-anchored receptors to downstream effectors and regulators. Moreover, cytokinin signaling is highly interactive with other pathways, and many components of the pathway appear to be functionally redundant. Proper address of these questions will be crucial for our further understanding on this important network.
Fine-mapping of SRT7 for short roots and identification of its candidate in rice

Abstract: Three allelic short root mutants were identified by screening mutants with defective root elongation of the rice japonica cultivar Nipponbare mutant library generated via 60Co γ-ray irradiation mutagenesis. These mutants, designated srt7-1 (short root 7-1), srt7-2 and srt7-3, respectively, had an extremely short seminal root, adventitious roots and lateral roots. Histological observation revealed the cell length of srt7 mutant roots was significantly shorter than that of wild-type roots. Genetic analysis indicated the short root phenotype was controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene. The SRT7 gene was mapped to a 20-kb interval between the markers STS6 and STS7 on chromosome 4 by a map-based cloning method. Sequencing of the six predicted genes in this region found that all of the three allelic mutants contained a 1-bp or 2-bp deletion in the same gene encoding a putative membrane-bound endo-1,4-β-glucanase. The SRT7 gene was expressed ubiquitously, with higher levels of transcript accumulation in roots at different developmental stages. However, no difference was found in the SRT7 transcription level between the mutant and wild type. Collectively, these results indicate the endo-1,4-β-glucanase encoding gene (LOC_Os04g41970) is likely the candidate for SRT7 that functions posttranscriptionally in rice root elongation.

Abstract: The plant phytohormone cytokinin regulates numerous growth and developmental processes by regulating cell division and cell differentiation. During the past ten years, remarkable progress has been made to our understanding on the cytokinin metabolism, transport and signaling, mainly using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system. In addition, substantial attentions have also been paid to crosstalks between cytokinin and other signaling pathways. According to our current understanding, cytokinin signaling is mediated by sequentially transferring a phosphoryl group in different members of a two-component system, referred to as phosphorelay. The two-component system may also act as a module linking cytokinin and other signaling pathways. Most known members of the two-component system are functionally redundant, but also show distinctive function in the regulation of a variety of developmental processes. In this review, we summarize our current understanding on cytokinin metabolism and transport, and discuss in detail on recent advances in cytokinin signaling as well as its cross-talks with other signaling pathways. We also make prospects on possible improvement of important agricultural traits by manipulating the cytokinin network.

In this article we will analyze the functions of language at work and better understand the instrumental , cognitive and social functions of language at work. At the same time through study the language at work make us to rethink profoundly on the existing theories and methods of modern linguistics. The rod-shaped form of crystalline β-FeOOH (akaganeite) was prepared by the template-free hydrothermal method with urea as the homogeneous precipitant. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrum were used to characterize the resulting products. The degradation of methyl orange (MO) was studied using the prepared nanostructure materials in a photo-Fenton-like process. MO degradation was effectively achieved by hydroxyl radicals that were generated in the heterogeneous catalysis process. Specific surface area of the prepared β-FeOOH was an important factor affecting the efficiency of MO degradation, which depended on the synthesis conditions such as the reaction temperature, the initial concentration of urea and FeCl3.6H2O as well as the n(urea)/n(Fe3+) ratio. The photodegradation efficiencies slightly decreased with the increase of initial pH in the range of 4.5 - 9.5, which indicated the prepared β-FeOOH catalyst can well overcome the drawback of a narrow pH range of homogeneous Fenton reaction. β-FeOOH catalysts loading and H2O

A 200-ka carbon isotope record from the South China Sea

Abstract: A stacked ocean carbon isotope (δ 13C) record of 200 ka is established on the basis of planktonic foraminifer (Globigerinoides ruber) δ 13C data from 8 sites in the South China Sea (SCS). The δ 13C record from the SCS displays a trend similar to that from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans mainly responding to long eccentricity and precession cycles, with all the three δ 13C minima occurring at glacial terminations. Thus, the changes of the oceanic carbon reservoir in glacial cycles should not be considered as a response only to ice-sheet variations, but could have been driven also by low latitude processes, such as the monsoon.
