Journal of Applied Finance and Banking , 2011,
Abstract: Status quo bias is a systematic cognitive error which makes it difficult forindividuals to make decisions independently of the currently dominant situation. This study pursues the question of whether bond market analysts are affected bystatus quo bias. We evaluated interest rate forecast series from twelve industrialnations. This revealed that, on average, forecasts were much too close to the statusquo – the current interest rate at the time when the forecast was made. With theaid of various analytical procedures it can be shown that the actual extent ofinterest rate changes is systematically and significantly underestimated.
Generic Method for Merging Satellite and Historical Ground Station Data to Design Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) Curves in Recordless Sub-Saharian Countries  [PDF]
Jorge E. Matos
Open Journal of Modern Hydrology (OJMH) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojmh.2018.84008
Abstract: The availability of long-term rainfall records is essential to conduct a serious frequency analysis in order to estimate the effective precipitation depth. The development of the process of elaboration of IDF (Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curves for a given location requires very precise data, at least with daily frequency, obtained through the use of rainfall records. The present study presents a method used to merge historical precipitation data with the latest data collected by satellite in order to perform graphs with IDF curves in places where rainfall records are scarce. The homogeneity of the data used is analyzed in order to guarantee its statistical utility and the frequency analysis was performed with the statistical distributions of Extreme Values Type I (Gumbel), Gamma, Pearson Type III and finally with Log-Pearson Type III, in order to verify which one of them applies better to the sites chosen for this analysis: the cities of Benguela and Lobito in the south of Angola. Daily rainfall data from the TRMM mission and historical daily data were used to derive the relationships between the maximum daily precipitation and the sub-daily precipitation values. From the observed daily data, techniques of disaggregation of the collected data were used, in order to generate a synthetic precipitation sequence with the extreme values in periods of time inferior to the daily one, with statistical properties similar to the registered data. Then IDF equations are established, with which the occasional storm depth is calculated for various return periods and various durations and, after them, the IDF curves are drawn for these two geographic stations.
Non-invasive interactive neurostimulation (InterX ?) reduces acute pain in patients following total knee replacement surgery: a randomised, controlled trial

Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1749-799x-6-45
Abstract: A clinical trial under the Hywel Dda Clinical Audit Committee to validate the clinical benefit of Non-invasive Interactive Neurostimulation (NIN) therapy using the InterX device was performed in patients undergoing TKR. 61 patients were randomised to treatment groups in blocks of two from the Theatre Operation List. The control group received the standard hospital course of pain medication and rehabilitation twice daily for 3 post-op days. The experimental group received 8 sessions of NIN therapy over 3 post-op days in addition to the standard course received by the Control group. Pain and range of motion were collected as the primary study measures.Sixty one subjects were enrolled and randomised, but 2 subjects (one/group) were excluded due to missing data at Baseline/Final; one subject in the InterX group was excluded due to pre-existing rheumatoid pain conditions confounding the analysis. The experimental group pre- to post-session Verbal Rating Scale for pain (VRS) showed that NIN therapy consistently reduced the pain scores by a mean of 2.3 points (SE 0.11). The NIN pre-treatment score at Final was used for the primary ANCOVA comparison, demonstrating a significantly greater cumulative treatment effect of a mean 2.2 (SE 0.49) points pain reduction (p = 0.002). Control subjects only experienced a mean 0.34 (SE 0.49) point decrease in pain. Ninety degrees ROM was required to discharge the patient and this was attained as an average despite the greater Baseline deficit in the InterX group. Eight control patients and three experimental patients did not achieve this ROM.The results clearly demonstrated the clinical benefit of NIN therapy as a supplement to the standard rehabilitation protocol. The subjects receiving InterX fared significantly better clinically. Within a relatively short 3-day period of time, patients in the experimental group obtained the necessary ROM for discharge and did it experiencing lower levels of pain than those in the control group.Adequate

Abstract: in order to study the association of nutritional status and immune response by the use of nutritional indicators 24 hiv positive patients were evaluated. anthropometric, biochemical and immunological parameters were measured. regarding nutritional status, 33% of the patients were normal and 67% were undernourished, 36% had a weight loss greater than 10%, 60% had triceps skinfold values below 12.5 mm, 54% had midarm circumference below 25.3 cm, 33% had body mass index below 20 kg/m2, 36% had serum albumin below 3.5 g/dl, 48% had transferrin below 2g/l, 40% had lymphocyte count below 1,500 cel/mm3, and 76% had cd4 below 500 cel/mm3. most sensitive indicators were triceps skinfold, midarm circumference and serum transferrin, cd4 were below 200 cel/mm3 in 50% of the patients, between 200 and 500 cel/mm3 in 25% and above 500 cel/mm3 in 25% of them. significant differences were found for weight, midarm circumference, body mass index, transferrin and lymphocyte count between patients and control. to differentiate normal patients from undernourished and among them, best indicators were weight loss percentage, body mass index, lymphocyte and cd4 count. the less useful were biochemical indicators. comparison according to cd4 levels showed similar results. findings indicate that worsening of nutritional status and staging of the hiv infection are accompanied by increased deterioration of the studied variables.
