Abstract: the cerrado vegetation in s?o paulo state is restricted to a few remnants which non-arboreal flora has rarely been studied. the present study aimed at characterizing the non-arboreal phanerogamic flora occurring in distinct "cerrado" vegetation types (wet camp, cerrado sensu stricto, woodland cerrado and riparian forest) at assis ecological station (22°33'65" to 22°36'68" s and 50°22'29" to 50°23'00" w), assis municipality, s?o paulo state, brazil, and, by comparison with other "cerrado" sites in the state, verifying possible occurrence of endemic or rare species. a floristic survey was carried out and a total of 301 species, 199 genera and 61 families of non-arboreal phanerogamic plants were found. the richest families for the studied life forms in the area were: fabaceae, asteraceae, bignoniaceae and poaceae. richness in the physiognomies, in decreasing order, was 146 species in the cerrado sensu stricto (48.8%), 48 species in the woodland cerrado (15.9%), 47 in the wet camp (15.6%), and, at last, the riparian forest, with 15 species (5.0%). compared to other cerrado areas, the diversity of the local non-arboreal flora is high. there is, also, a high number of species (102 or 34%) exclusive from the studied area. high proportions of non-arboreal species occurring in a single locality have been also observed in other studies, indicating that either endemism can be higher among these life-forms than among arboreal species or inventory methods were not adequate to survey the total richness of the studied areas. conservation strategies and botanical inventories must especially consider the non-arboreal flora, since arboreal species are both more widespread and proportionally better known.

Abstract: for adolescents who have hearing impairment, the identity formation process has its own subtleties. besides the conflicts which are a part of being a teenager, he/she has to form his/her identity as someone who has a hearing loss and needs a hearing aid. taking into account the countless factors influencing the use of this resource, this study aimed to undercover the relations between self-concepts of deaf adolescents to the use of hearing aid, looking at the adolescents' own perceptions and those of his parents. the self-concept scale - eacij - and questionnaires were applied to 30 hearing impaired adolescents, aged 12-16 years, undergoing treatment at the centro de distúrbios da audi??o, linguagem e vis?o (cedalvi), a service center within the hrac/usp, and to their parents. the results showed that most of the subjects involved in the study actually use their hearing aids and have positive self-concept. it was concluded that the constant use of this resource is associated with the good conditions of the self-concept and to the psycho-social support of the multi / interdisciplinary team.

Abstract: background and objectives: nowadays, severe anesthetic complications caused by the improper use of mechanical ventilators are rare. however, technical details even in recent models can be a trap for the anesthesiologist and threaten patient safety. the objective of this report was to demonstrate the importance of a careful analysis of the device to be used, as well as to detect and treat intraoperative tension pneumothorax. case report: a 16-year old female patient, physical status asa i, underwent corneal conjunctival covering under general anesthesia. anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane and controlled mechanical ventilation. no abnormalities were observed during anesthesia. at the final phase of the surgery, after mobilizing the anesthesia device to start the awakening process, the patient developed hypoxia, hypertension and ventilatory difficulties. after removal of the sterile drapes from the surgical field, subcutaneous emphysema was evident in the face, neck and upper limb. the tracheal cannula, which contained blood, was changed. a chest x-ray confirmed the diagnosis of pneumothorax that was immediately drained. inspection of the equipment revealed the presence of a kink in the tubing connecting the inferior portion of the canister to the equipment itself caused by mobilization of the articulated arm, blocking the normal flow of gases and leading to pulmonary barotrauma. conclusions: the development of tension pneumothorax during general anesthesia with positive pressure ventilation should always be considered. several factors can contribute to the development of this condition, which should be considered when they are present during surgeries. the anesthesia equipment should be examined carefully to detect potential causes of anesthetic complications.

The disorderly exploitation of nativeforests has caused the depletion of the geneticvariability of many species of economic andenvironmental value. Since the 1960 decade, the Forestry Institute of S o Paulo has beendeveloping pioneering studies of ex situconservation of some endangered native treespecies and with economic interests, as for example,Aspidosperma polyneuron aiming the conservation, the tree breeding and the knowledge of thesilvicultural behavior. In Brazil, planting of native species aiming at the commercial exploration is rare, due to the slow growth, the lack of silvicultural information and supply of seeds and seedling of superior quality. On account of this, in 1964 an experiment aiming to evaluate the effects of planting spacings on growing of Poecilanthae parviflora, which is a species of slow growth, was implanted in the Ecological Station of Bauru, SP. The trial was established in a complete-randomized block-design, with five treatments and five repetitions. The treatments consisted of the following spacings: 1.0 m x 1.0 m; 1.5 m x 1.5 m; 2.0 m x 2.0 m; 2.5 m x 2.5 m and 3.0 m x 3.0 m, which were evaluated at the breast height diameter, total height, individual volume, volume for hectare and the survival. The results demonstrated that the diameter at breast height, individual volume and volume for hectare has been influenced by the spacing. With the increase of the spacing, it had greater increment in the values of the three first variables, the opposite occurred in the last one. The survival however was not influenced by the spacing. Possibly, the use of more dense initial spacing and the use of selective and successive thinning can produce higher proportion of wood and better quality.

Abstract: the need for increasing the botanical collecting effort at the national scale, as to aid in the identification of priority areas for conservation as to improve the knowledge about the national biota, has been highlighted in several recent analyses concerning the brazilian biodiversity. for the plants, the collecting density at the national scale (0.44 dried specimens/km2) is well bellow the minimum for a complete knowledge about the flora (3 dried specimens/km2) or even for an assessment of the richness of a given region (1 dried specimen/km2). recent analysis revealed that even in the south and southwest regions, where the infra-structure is better and the number of botanists greater, the collecting density is inadequate. in the s?o paulo state, some regions have been considered poorly collected. the alto paranapanema basin is one of these regions. this paper presents the results of a botanical inventory at the paranapanema municipality conservation units (23o 32' 02" s and 48o 45' 29" w) and is part of a broader project which aims to contribute for an increase in the botanical collecting density at that region. the state forest and the ecological station of paranapanema have 900 ha of seasonal semideciduous forest. the pre-existing trails and the trails established for this research were visited monthly between june 2007 and july 2008. 693 fertile specimens were collected and 489 species were identified, belonging to 294 genus and 98 families, according to the following distribution: myrtaceae (37 species), fabaceae-faboideae (32), rubiaceae (28), bignoniaceae (23), asteraceae (20), lauraceae (17), apocynaceae (15), melastomataceae (13), euphorbiaceae, malvaceae e fabaceae-mimosoideae (12 each). fifteen species are under extinction risk. the distribution of the species among the life forms reveals 291 trees (59.5%), 72 lianas (14.7%), 58 shrubs (11.9%), 45 herbs (9.2%), 19 epiphytes (3.9%) and 4 hemiparasites (0.8%). the collecting density in the municipality of p
