Influences of Soda Soil on the Ultrastructure and Storage Inclusions of Chloroplasts of Syringa oblata Lindl.  [PDF]

Abstract: With a high pH value, soda soil restricts the growth of plants. It had previously been assumed that the inhibition of plant growth by neutral salt stress was partly due to the changes of the ultrastructure and storage inclusions of chloroplasts. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of alkali-salt mixed stress of soda soil on chloroplasts of higher plant Syringa oblata Lindl. Testing S. oblata plants had grown for more than five years in soda soil, and transmission electron microscope was used for determining the ultrastructure and storage inclusions of chloroplasts. The results showed that some chloroplasts were destroyed, the normal chloroplasts became smaller, and the envelopes of the functional chloroplasts were slightly expanded generally in soda-stressed plants. The most noteworthy fact was that much more starchgrains accumulated in the chloroplasts of S. oblata growing in soda soil than in neutral soil. The total contents of plastoglobules in chloroplasts did not change considerably, and plastoglobules with different electron densities appeared in chloroplasts in the plants growing in soda soil. We presume that the reduction of the volume and number of functional chloroplasts and the occupation of carbon resources by starch grains accumulated in chloroplasts were the possible reasons for the inhibition of S. oblata growth by soda soil. The accumulation of starch grains was one of the adaptive traits of S. oblata, which promoted the survival of plants in soda soil for that the starch grains could serve as a steady source

Abstract: 雪花是自然界的增长现象,它具有复杂的树枝状形态。我们利用细胞自动机模型在计算机上模拟出许多种类的雪花图象,反映出实际雪花生长的一些物理过程。“奇偶规则”考虑到水汽冻结时要释放大量潜热这个物理特点,“限制规则”和“优先规则”考虑到水汽扩散到冰晶表面要选择不同的着陆位置这个物理特点。所有模拟出的雪花和实际观测到的雪花非常相似,且具有分数维的形式。看来,细胞自动机是模拟像雪花那样在耗散非线性动力系统中所出现的复杂形态的有力工具。
Powdery mildew fungal effector candidates share N-terminal Y/F/WxC-motif

Abstract: In a cDNA library from barley epidermis containing powdery mildew haustoria, two-thirds of the sequenced ESTs were fungal and represented ~3,000 genes. Many of the most highly expressed genes encoded small proteins with N-terminal signal peptides. While these proteins are novel and poorly related, they do share a three-amino acid motif, which we named "Y/F/WxC", in the N-terminal of the mature proteins. The first amino acid of this motif is aromatic: tyrosine, phenylalanine or tryptophan, and the last is always cysteine. In total, we identified 107 such proteins, for which the ESTs represent 19% of the fungal clones in our library, suggesting fundamental roles in haustoria function. While overall sequence similarity between the powdery mildew Y/F/WxC-proteins is low, they do have a highly similar exon-intron structure, suggesting they have a common origin. Interestingly, searches of public fungal genome and EST databases revealed that haustoria-producing rust fungi also encode large numbers of novel, short proteins with signal peptides and the Y/F/WxC-motif. No significant numbers of such proteins were identified from genome and EST sequences from either fungi which do not produce haustoria or from haustoria-producing Oomycetes.In total, we identified 107, 178 and 57 such Y/F/WxC-proteins from the barley powdery mildew, the wheat stem rust and the wheat leaf rust fungi, respectively. All together, our findings suggest the Y/F/WxC-proteins to be a new class of effectors from haustoria-producing pathogenic fungi.Biotrophic plant fungal pathogens cause dramatic yield losses in many crop species worldwide. The Effect of an Attenuated Rabies Virus SRV9 on Suckling Mouse Growth After Intracerebral Inoculation

Abstract: Rabies virus is a kind of virus having strict neurotropic property. Intracerebral inoculation method was commonly used to RV-related research. SRV9 is an attenuated RV vaccine strain. In the present study, we inoculated intracerebrally on suckling mouse with SRV9 strain. The results showed that SRV9 could cause a mortality rate of 100% on suckling mice below 13 day old. The mortality rates of 14-17 day old mice were 68, 33, 33 and 17%, respectively without incidence above 18 day old. Meanwhile, the results showed that the growth of survival suckling mice was inhibited remarkably after intracerebral inoculation SRV9. The 16 day old survival suckling mice were chosen to perform body weight test and the result showed that the weight growth was very slow with 14% less than normal growth rate. However, 2 weeks latter the weight of the mice began to recover gradually but slowly. It was suggested that the intracerebral RV reproduction could take a significant effect on the growth and development of the mice and with RV being eliminated by antibody, the weight of the mice which were inoculated with SRV9 could gradually recover.

Identification of the dehydrin gene family from grapevine species and analysis of their responsiveness to various forms of abiotic and biotic stress

Abstract: Four DHN genes were identified in both V. vinifera and V. yeshanensis, which shared a high sequence identity between the two species but little homology between the genes themselves. These genes were designated DHN1, DHN2, DHN3 and DHN4. All four of the DHN proteins were highly hydrophilic and were predicted to be intrinsically disordered, but they differed in their isoelectric points, kinase selectivities and number of functional motifs. Also, the expression profiles of each gene differed appreciably from one another. Grapevine DHN1 was not expressed in vegetative tissues under normal growth conditions, but was induced by drought, cold, heat, embryogenesis, as well as the application of abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). It was expressed earlier in V. yeshanensis under drought conditions than in V. vinifera, and also exhibited a second round of up-regulation in V. yeshanensis following inoculation with Erysiphe necator, which was not apparent in V. vinifera. Like DHN1, DHN2 was induced by cold, heat, embryogenesis and ABA; however, it exhibited no responsiveness to drought, E. necator infection, SA or MeJA, and was also expressed constitutively in vegetative tissues under normal growth conditions. Conversely, DHN3 was only expressed during seed development at extremely low levels, and DHN4 was expressed specifically during late embryogenesis. Neither DHN3 nor DHN4 exhibited responsiveness to any of the treatments carried out in this study. Interestingly, the presence of particular cis-elements within the promoter regions of each gene was positively correlated with their expression profiles.The grapevine DHN family comprises four divergent members. While it is likely that their functions overlap to some extent, it seems that DHN1 provides the main stress-responsive function. Abstract:
There is a growing research interest in the topic of work engagement over the past years. In reference to Schauefeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma & Bakker (2002) [1], work engagement is described as “a positive, fulfilling work-related state of mind that is characterized by vigor, dedication and absorption”. As compare to the researches based on the relationship between work engagement and organizational commitment and job performance, the existing researches on the relationship between work engagement and turnover intentions are far fewer. We theoretically discussed the relationship among work engagement, affective commitment and turnover intentions. Research results show that work engagement is negatively related to turnover intentions whereby affective commitment plays a regulating role. Affective commitment moderates the relationship between work engagement and turnover intentions whereby employees’ affective commitment is stronger and employees are more willing to invest effort in their work; hence, employees’ turnover intentions are reduced.
