Abstract: The investigation of optical glass waveguides for liquid density measurement with large diameters in various shapes is reported. The dependence of sensitivity on the bending radius was calculated. The measurement system in the near infrared waveband was set up. Various bending waveguides were measured, and the results of measurement are nearly in agreement with the theoretical analysis.
L428 cell morphophenotypic changes induced by CD99 overexpression via NF-κB inactivation

Abstract: Background: Classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) is characterized by the presence of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells. CD99 downregulation produces HRS-like cells and morphological changes in B lymphoma. The NF-κB pathway protects HRS cells from apoptosis and is in part responsible for its unique functional characteristics in Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Objective: To observe the changes in the morphological and immunophenotype characteristics of L428 cells following transformation with CD99 and explore the role of NF-κB in these changes. Methods: A mammalian expression vector driving CD99 was constructed and transfected into the L428 cell line (L428-MVC). L428, L428-EVC (empty vector) and L428-MVC were analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence, and Western blot analysis, and comparisons were made between the three cell lines with regards to the expression of CD2, CD3, CD15, CD20, CD30, CD79, CD99 and NF-κBp65. In addition, cell proliferation was monitored by MTT assay, while apoptosis and cell cycle status were determined by flow cytometry. Results: Transfection of L428 cells with CD99 altered the morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of HRS cells. Expression of CD15, CD30, and NF-κBp65 disappeared, while CD2, CD3, CD20 and CD79 levels remained negative. In addition, the presence of CD99 led to cell cycle arrest at G2/M and a reduction in cell proliferation. More importantly, CD99 dramatically decreased cell viability and increased cellular apoptosis compared with naive L428 cells and the L428-EVC cell line. These results indicated that the upregulation of CD99 altered cell morphology and immunophenotype, while also decreasing viability in vitro. Conclusions: CD99 may play a key role in affecting cell morphology and immunophenotype characteristics via inactivation of NF-κBp65.

Abstract: Some important improvements of measurements for steam humidity by means of light scattering are proposed. Extinction coefficient of spherical particles is calculated with Mie's theory and, in accordance with the distribution of water droplets, the average extinction coefficient is calculated. The error is modified for forward scattering. The estab- lished measurement system can measure steam humidity and average diameter of water droplets simultaneously.

Abstract: A new sensing method was presented, which is advantageous for selective detection of liquid density. The anomalous dispersion which is the theoretical basis of the new sensing method was discussed. The dependence of complex refractive index of matter having absorption band on wavelength was analyzed. The attenuation of reflectivity and the attenuated total reflection were studied. Initial experiments show that the sensing method is feasible.

Abstract: A new system of large-diameter waveguide with liquid core for the measurement of liquid density is presented.The main advantage of this system is the relatively high measuring sensitivity. The principle of this system and the effect of construction parameters of the system on the sensitivity are discussed.The results of measurements are nearly in agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract: The development of synapses is an important question in neurobiology. We employ patchclamp technique to record MEPCs and EPCs of myoballs inXenopus cell culture. The rate of EPC/MEPC is related with synapses maturation. Accordingly, we define the mature synapses as those whose rate of presynaptic membrane ’ s EPC to MEPC is more than 8. The process of maturation needs about 2–5 h after neuntes contact with myoballs. We divide the development of synapses into three stages: young, developing and mature. The neurotransmitters stack gradually and increase by hundreds of times along with young synapses growing into maturity. So the process of synapses maturation should include presynaptic membrane specialization, postsynaptic membrane specialization and neurotransmitters stack.

Inducement of Sechenov inhibition by EtOH and NA in the Bufo toad

Abstract: Central inhibition, discovered by Sechenov in 1862, suggests that electrically stimulating the forebrain or medulla oblongata in frog generally suppresses reflexes. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Using ethanol (EtOH), noradrenalin (NA), and other neurotransmitters in thalamic preparations, Sechenov inhibition was stimulated in Bufo toads in this study. The result showed that, similar to Sechenov inhibition, the acute application of EtOH or NA excited the thalamus and prolonged the latency of withdrawal reflex. Our study evidences the involvement of α-adrenoceptors in such central inhibition, and explains the role of acute EtOH application in the induction of reflex inhibition.
