A study on adsorption of Pb(II), Cr(Ш) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution by peanut husk

Abstract: Peanut husk has been used in this work for removing Pb(II), Cr(Ш) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. Batch adsorption studies were carried out under different pH, initial concentration of metal ions, interfering metal ions, time and temperature. Adsorption was poor in strongly acidic solution but was improved in alkaline medium and continuously increased with rise in pH. The presence of one metal decreased the removal of the other metal ions. The adsorption processes were more akin towards second-order equation. The suitability of the adsorbent was tested by fitting the adsorption data with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, which gave good fits with both isotherms. For an adsorbent amount of 2 g/L and initial metal ions 10 mg/L, the maximum monolayer values of Pb(II), Cr(Ш) and Cu(II) was 4.59 mg/g, 3.34 mg/g and 2.96 mg/g. The adsorption was in the order Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cr(Ш). The values of the thermodynamic parameters, ΔH, ΔS and ΔG, indicated the interactions to be thermodynamically favorable. A Study of the Relationship between English Self-concept and Language Learning Strategies

Abstract: The present study concentrated on the relationship between self-concept and language learning strategies. Participants of the study were 157 students from one University in Shandong, China. Quantitative data was collected through two questionnaires. The first one was the revised Chinese version of self-concept scale modified by Pan (2003) from Marsh’s (1992) SQDII. Another inventory based on Oxford’ classification system of learning strategies (SILL) was used to assess learner’s strategy use. By the reliability analysis, it was found that all these coefficients were significantly high, and the two questionnaires were reliable respectively. Based on the detailed analysis of data, some major findings through statistical analysis of SPSS 13.0 were summarized as follows. First of all, the subjects’ English self-concept was medium, and the subjects’ English pronunciation self-concept was better than their general English self-concept and English speaking self-concept. Second, gender had no significant effects on the general English self-concept and English speaking self-concept. Finally, in terms of the relationship between English self-concept and language learning strategies, by Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regressions, it was concluded that general English self-concept, English speaking self-concept and English pronunciation self-concept had the highest correlation level with the cognitive strategy, and English pronunciation self-concept had the weakest correlation level with the memory strategy and compensatory strategy. The findings of the study imply that there are some pedagogical implications for English learning and teaching. At the same time, teachers should attach importance to enhancing students’ English self-concept level in training their language learning strategies.
Metabolic profiling reveals therapeutic effects of Herba Cistanches in an animal model of hydrocortisone-induced 'kidney-deficiency syndrome'

Abstract: Using GC-MS-based metabolic profiling, we investigated the metabolic responses to Herba Cistanches intervention in a rat model of the hydrocortisone-induced 'kidney-deficiency syndrome'.The metabolic profiles of the rats after hydrocortisone injection deviated from the pre-dose metabolic state at different time points, ranging from day 1 to day 10, whereas the metabolic profiles of the rats treated with both hydrocortisone and water extract of Herba Cistanches returned to the pre-dose state on day 10.The intervention of Herba Cistanches caused a systemic recovery from the hydrocortisone-induced metabolic perturbation in rats. This study also demonstrates that metabolic profiling is useful in studying therapeutic mechanisms of herbal medicines.Through modulation of biochemical reactions, control mechanisms, and enzyme activities, many drugs or chemicals cause fluctuation of metabolites present in single cells, tissues or body fluids [1]. Metabolic profiling, i.e. probing metabolites of low molecular weight (MW < 1000 Da) by means of advanced analytical instrument coupled with multivariate statistics, can show systemic responses of living systems to xenobiotics. It is also technically feasible to catalogue all the multifactorial heritable and environmentally influenced metabolic profiles of an organism, including the physiopathological consequences of toxin and/or disease-induced disturbances or disequilibria in metabolic regulatory network on a systemic level. To date, metabolic profiling has been established in screening, diagnosis, prognosis of diseases [2-4], and safety evaluation of certain drugs and chemicals [5-11].Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [12] and mass spectrometry (MS) [13], applied alone or in combination, have been used in profiling and characterizing metabolic consequences of toxin and/or disease-induced disturbances. Abstract: The appearance of the inflection point in the equation of state (EoS) is associated with the second order phase transition. The high cumulants of conserved quantities near the critical point are corresponding to the high derivatives of the EoS near the inflection point. The critical behavior of high cumulants of conserved charge near the QCD critical point, in particular, the sign change, is closely related to the appearance of inflection point. We show in general how the times of sign change of high cumulants relate to the order of derivative. We also demonstrate that the character of inflection point of EoS is as visible as the sign change of high cumulants in 3 systems, i.e., van der Waals equation of fluid, magnetization of spin models and the baryon number density of QCD matter. Therefore, we propose that the EoS, or the mean of baryon number density, should be measured and studied together with its higher cumulants in exploring QCD critical point in heavy ion collisions.

Abstract: 采用衍生化GC/MS的方法分析尿液中内源性小分子代谢物, 结合主成分分析、最小二乘法等模式识别方法计算峰响应信号,冷应激前后正常大鼠尿液内源性代谢物在主成分分析图上产生显著分离,人参皂苷组则冷应激前后几乎无分离。利用单维统计对差异物质加以检验,发现其中与应激相关的代谢物如酪氨酸、色氨酸等物质的相对含量产生显著变化,据此推测机体对冷刺激的应答以及应激后自我调节的过程,而这些物质中绝大多数在人参皂苷组中变化的显著性降低或者已无显著性。本文从代谢物的角度证实冷应激对动物机体的影响、机体的自我恢复以及人参皂苷的抗应激作用。

Abstract: 对传统升流式固体反应器(USR)进行改进,反应器内设置专用搅拌器,搅拌器间歇开启,在保留USR各项优势的前提下,使料液与厌氧微生物接触更充分,反应温度更均匀,提高产气率,同时还解决了传统USR的“结壳”问题,提高了反应器的传质效率、甲烷产气率和COD去除效果。进料含固量在12.1%时,水利停留时间为17 d,反应器最高容积负荷达到4.9 kg COD/(m3·d),产气速率为2.55 m3/(m3·d),产气率达到0.359 m3/kg干猪粪。

Abstract: 由于中医的“整体观”和中药复方的复杂非线形特征,采用常规药理指标时中药复方的效应进行评价存在着局限性,而现代医学越来越多地采用系统生物学方法对疾病和药物效应进行研究,使得两个医学体系在整体观和方法学上逐渐走向沟通、互补和融合,为中药复方整体效应评价方法的创新提供了契机。通过研究本文提出了采用系统生物学的策略和方法,基于疾病和药物干预下的系统代谢网络的整体性和动态性的变化评价中药整体效应,从而揭示中医“证”的内涵,解释中药复方对疾病的治疗作用,以及指导中药的安全用药。

Abstract: This article was aimed to study the influence of day-night reversal on rat energy metabolism, and evaluate the intervention effect of ginsenosides on day-night reversal stressed rats. A total of 24 rats were divided into the normal control group, day-night reversal model group, and ginsenosides (100 mg/kg) intervention group. After 1 week accommodate, model group and ginsenosides intervention group were made day-night reversal for 8 days. The body weight of rats in each group was weighed every day before/after experiment. And the food intake of rats in each group was weighed on the day before the experiment and on the 8th day of the experiment. At the end of 8th day, serum samples were derivatized with TMCS prior to GC-MS instrumental analysis. And partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to find the potential biomarkers, and evaluate the intervention effects of ginsenosides. The results showed that the day-night reversal stress improved body weight and food intake of the rat markedly (P < 0.05). Compared to normal control group, the amount of food intake appeared reversal in day and night. Ginsenosides lightly inhibit the increase of body weight and food intake. Metabolomics studies showed that day-night reversal stress had connection with changes in energy metabolism, protein absorption and degradation, fatty acid metabolism, and cholesterol metabolism pathway. And ginsenosides had some improvement. It was concluded that ginsenosides can modulate excitatory and inhibitive neurotransmitters in upstream metabolism pathway, and change the substances in downstream, then improve day-night reversal induced metabolism changes.
