How Do Companies Adjust their Independent Directors after a Mishap--Evidence from Independent Directors’ Background  [PDF]

Abstract: Selection of independent directors in China’s listed companies is a two-way choice dominated by listed companies. Thereafter, most companies adjust their independent directors after a mishap (e.g. receiving qualified audit opinions or punished by regulatory authorities). This paper investigates the behavior of how companies adjust their independent directors from the perspective of independent directors’ background, by using data of Chinese listed companies to which a mishap happened between 2002 and 2004 as our target sample. Evidence shows that listed companies will increase independent directors with accounting background significantly after receiving qualified audit opinions or punished by regulatory authorities, for the purpose of mitigating distress from capital market and medium and minority shareholders, which highlights the supervising role of independent directors with accounting background. Besides, these companies enjoy significantly contemporaneous return after the adjustment.
Weighted Sato-Tate Vertical Distribution of the Satake Parameter of Maass Forms on PGL(N)

Abstract: We formulate a conjectured orthogonality relation between the Fourier coefficients of Maass forms on PGL(N) for N>=2. Based on the work of Goldfeld-Kontorovich and Blomer for N=3, and on our conjecture for N>=4, we prove a weighted vertical equidistribution theorem (with respect to the generalized Sato-Tate measure) for the Satake parameter of Maass forms at a finite prime. For N=3, the rate of convergence for the equidistribution theorem is obtained.

Abstract: We discover new Voronoi formulae for automorphic forms on GL($n$) for $n\geq 4$. There are $[n/2]$ different Voronoi formulae on GL($n$), which are Poisson summation formulae weighted by Fourier coefficients of the automorphic form with twists by some hyper-Kloosterman sums.

Abstract: The synthetic making test has been widely used in evaluating the break ability of high-voltage circuit breaker. However, the test research and application are still inadequate, especially in the condition of rated voltage. According to the realistic conditions of test stations in China, a control device based on pre-arcing current detection and phase control is proposed in this paper. A sample of the control device made up of DSP TMS320LF2407A is fabricated, in which the CPLD MAX7064 is used to transmit signals for EMC design. It can be applied in full voltage synthetic making test at a level of 126kV/63kA. The test results show that, it is accurate to control the making phase of the applied voltage, whether the closing is demanded at voltage peak or zero.

Abstract: In this paper, a new nonlinear conjugate gradient method is proposed for large-scale unconstrained optimization. The sufficient descent property holds without any line searches. We use some steplength technique which ensures the Zoutendijk condition to be held, this method is proved to be globally convergent. Finally, we improve it, and do further analysis.

In 1979, Erdös proved by probabilistic methods that for p ≥ 2 with if there is a graph homomorphism from G onto Kp then b(G)f(p)|E(G)| In this paper, we obtained the best possible lower bounds of b(G) for graphs G with a graph homomorphism onto a Kneser graph or a circulant graph and we characterized the graphs G reaching the lower bounds when G is an edge maximal graph with a graph homomorphism onto a complete graph, or onto an odd cycle.

Abstract: We prove that a smooth solution of the 3D Cahn-Hilliard-Boussinesq system with zero viscosity in a bounded domain breaks down if a certain norm of vorticity blows up at the same time. Here, this norm is weaker than bmo-norm.

Abstract: This paper studies uniqueness of weak solutions to an electrohydrodynamics model in ?(=2,3). When =2, we prove a uniqueness without any condition on the velocity. For =3, we prove a weak-strong uniqueness result with a condition on the vorticity in the homogeneous Besov space.

Electro-Acupuncture in Relieving Labor Pain

Abstract: To study the efficacy of electro-acupuncture for the relief of labor pain, and to build a better understanding of how electro-acupuncture might influence the neuroendocrine system, 36 primiparas were randomly divided into an electro-acupuncture group and a control group. Assessments of pain intensity and degree of relaxation during labor were analyzed. The differences between the electro-acupuncture group and the control group on the concentration of β-endorphin (β-EP) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the peripheral blood were compared. The electro-acupuncture group was found to exhibit a lower pain intensity and a better degree of relaxation than the control group (p = 0.018; p = 0.031). There existed a significant difference in the concentration of β-EP and 5-HT in the peripheral blood between the two groups at the end of the first stage (p = 0.037; p = 0.030). Electro-acupuncture was found to be an effective alternative or complementary therapy in the relief of pain during labor. The benefit of electro-acupuncture for relieving labor pain may be based on the mechanism of producing a synergism of the central nervous system (CNS) with a direct impact on the uterus through increasing the release of β-EP and 5-HT into the peripheral blood.
