Abstract: To explore the distribution and composition of phytoplankton community and their responses to environmental changes, summer net-collected phytoplankton and physicochemical parameters in the Hangzhou Bay during 2004–2010 were investigated. A total of four phyla and 84 species were identified, including 67 diatom and 12 dinoflagellate species. The dominant species con- stantly consisted of the diatoms, although the dominance of dinoflagellate and cyanobacteria increased recently. Due to great spa- tio-temporal variations in environmental factors(salinity, suspended solids, and nutrient concentration), significant heterogeneities in community compositions among different years and subregions(inner and middle sections, and bay mouth) were found based on the analyses of multidimensional scaling and similarity. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that salinity and Si/N were the main variables associated with algal assemblage. Compared with the historical data since the 1980 s, eutrophication(N, P, and N/P increased with decreasing Si/N) was exacerbated drastically. Moreover, climatic forcing and human activities resulted in a series of physical alterations, including sediment retention, temperature increase, and salinity decrease as well as reduction in water exchanges. All these changes induced obvious increases in cell density and Chl-a while decreases in species diversity and diatom-dinoflagellate ratio as well as the shifting of dominant species. Therefore, the long-term phytoplankton variations were closely related to anthropogenic and climatic perturbations in the Hangzhou Bay

Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1749-8090-4-39
Abstract: Between March 2000 and December 2008, we prospectively and randomly studied the insertion of preoperative IABP in 115 (7.4%) and postoperative IABP in 106 (6.8%) of the 1560 consecutive patients. Group A is preoperative IABP therapy. Group B is postoperative IABP therapy. There was no significant difference in the number of grafts used between the two groups. Completeness of revascularization did not differ between the two groups. The statistically significant difference was hospital mortality (2.6% in group A vs. 3.8% in group B) (p < 0.05). And there was significant reduction in postoperative low cardiac output, malignant arrhythmia, acute renal failure and length of stay in ICU in group A, compared with group B (p < 0.05). In the two groups, six-, 12-, 24- and 48-month survival rates were similar. In the study the degree of improvement in angina and quality of life did not differ significantly between the two groups. The use of preoperative IABP in SLVD patients undergoing OPCAB is of safety and effectiveness. The combined use of preoperative IABP and OPCAB allows complete revascularization in SLVD patients with an important reduction in operative mortality and excellent mid-term results.Despite improvements in medical therapies and surgical techniques, the management of coronary patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction (SLVD) (ejection fraction [EF] = 0.35) is still challenging[1,2]. For this population, CABG is associated with higher postoperative morbidity and mortality compared with patients with normal left ventricular function[3]. Off pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB) has theoretical and practical advantages over conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CCABG)[4,5].Also in high risk coronary patients, OPCAB is an attractive alternative, but due to hemodynamic instability this cohort of patients has usually been operated using some circulatory support. The elective use of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in these patients may prevent th
Is mitral valve repair superior to replacement for chronic ischemic mitral regurgitation with left ventricular dysfunction?

Abstract: A total of 218 consecutive patients underwent either mitral valve repair (MVP, n = 112) or mitral valve replacement (MVR, n = 106). We retrospectively reviewed the clinical material, operation methods, echocardiography check during operation and follow-up. Patients details and follow-up outcomes were compared using multivariate and Kaplan-Meier analyses. No statistical difference was found between the two groups in term of intraoperative data. Early mortality was 3.2% (MVP 2.7% and MVR 3.8%). At discharge, Left ventricular end-systolic and end-diastolic diameter and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were improved more in the MVP group than MVR group (P < 0.05), however, in follow-up no statistically significant difference was observed between the MVR and MVP group (P > 0.05). Follow-up mitral regurgitation grade was significantly improved in the MVR group compared with the MVP group (P < 0.05). The Kaplan-Meier survival estimates at 1, 3, and 5 years were simlar between MVP and MVR group. Logistic regression revealed poor survival was associated with old age(#75), preoperative renal insufficiency and low left ventricular ejection fraction (< 30%).Mitral valve repair is the procedure of choice in the majority of patients having surgery for severe ischemic mitral regurgitation with left ventricular dysfunction. Early results of MVP treatment seem to be satisfactory, but several lines of data indicate that mitral valve repair provided less long-term benefit than mitral valve replacement in the LVD patients.Good-risk patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) also benefit from mitral valve repair (MVP)compared with mitral valve replacement(MVR), with better early and late (5-year) survival, in part because of preservation of the subvalvar apparatus [1,2]. However, the presence of significant MR in the presence of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) represents more advanced disease and is associated with a poor prognosis. There is discrepancy in the literatu

Abstract: Increased expression of EZH2 correlates with aggressive clinical behavior in various malignancies. In this study, we aim to investigate the clinical and prognostic values of EZH2 expression and activity in tumor tissues and improve the risk stratification in patients with renal cell carcinoma after surgery. We analyzed EZH2 expression and its activity as indicated by H3K27me3 levels comprising 373 patients with renal cell carcinoma in our institute. Outcome was assessed as overall survival and disease free survival using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Prognostic values of EZH2 and H3K27me3 expression for clinical outcomes were evaluated by Cox regression analysis. We used receiver operating characteristic to calculate diagnostic accuracy. High EZH2 expression correlates with poor overall survival in all patients, especially in advanced RCC, which is an independent prognostic factor in disease free survival and overall survival. Compared with EZH2, H3K27me3 expression is not an independent prognostic factor. The expressions of H3K27me3 and EZH2 are not completely consistent, which might be due to complicated interaction of Polycomb Repressor Complex 2. A combination of EZH2 expression and TNM stage could have better prognostic value than do TNM stage or EZH2 expression alone in both sets for disease free survival and overall survival. These results imply that evaluating intratumoral EZH2 density might improve prognostic value to the TNM staging system and inform treatment decisions for patients with late-stage renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract: Increasing demands for and utilizations of petrochemicals have resulted in an increase in levels of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine, coastal and estuarine environment.Maritime oil contamination usually caused by maritime incidents has catastrophic impacts on the marine environment.More generally, merchant ships can have a significant environmental impact due to on-going human activities,e.g.air and sea pollutions caused by oil, fuel, waste disposal, and the effects of ballast water exchange processes. The oil co...
Logistics and Regional Economic Growth - Evidence from the Space Econometric Panel Data from China
Zhibing Cai,Jianchu Zhou
Economic Management Journal , 2012,
Abstract: Unlike the traditional economic growth model, spatial contact must be noted when we construct relative models in the study of the relationship between logistics industry development and regional economic. With the use of space panel econometric model and CD production function, by constructing a regional logistics industry development and regional economic growth economic model, the study about the economic growth of China's provinces and the logistics industry during 1988-2009 is carried out. The results show that there are significant spatial correlation between Chinese province's economic growth and development of the logistics industry. 1 percent increase in the neighboring provinces logistics industry will make the province's GDP increase about 0.15 percent. Finally, according to estimations, some relevant policy recommendations are given.

Graphene with the secondary amine-terminated zigzag edge as a line electron emitter

Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1007/s00339-012-7180-3
Abstract: An extraordinary low vacuum barrier height of 2.30 eV has been found on the zigzag-edge of graphene terminated with the secondary amine via the ab initio calculation. This edge structure has a flat band of edge states attached to the gamma point where the transversal kinetic energy is vanishing. We show that the field electron emission is dominated by the flat band. The edge states pin the Fermi level to a constant, leading to an extremely narrow emission energy width. The graphene with such edge is a promising line field electron emitter that can produce highly coherent emission current.
Comment on slope of nonlinear FN plot and field enhancement factor
Weiliang Wang,Zhibing Li
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: It is common practice to extract field enhancement factor from the slope of FN plot. Many experimentalists working on field electron emission had reported multi-(linear segment) FN plots, which can be divided into several (usually two) linear segments. Then multi-(field enhancement factor) were extracted from the FN plot. They claimed that the field enhancement factor increases with applied field if the FN plot bends downward (vice versus if the FN plot bends upward). We show that this is contrary to fact.
