A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Translations of Charlotte’s Web

Abstract: As a classic in children’s literature, Charlotte’s Web has been translated into more than 20 languages, including Chinese. As there are multi-level and multi-dimensional selections and adaptations in the translation of children’s literature, this paper makes an attempt to apply the adaptation theory to study the selections and adaptations in the two Chinese versions of Charlotte’s Web from the phonological, lexical, syntactic, discoursal and socio-cultural levels. It is suggested that the translator of children’s literature should make sensible language choices that adapt to children’s understandability and appreciation, so that the translation can be readily understood and accepted by the target readers and its social value realized. Real Effect of Exchange Rate in RMB and Trade Surplus in China

Abstract: The relationship between real effective exchange rate (REER) of RMB from 1997 to 2006 and trade surplus between China and other trade partners was discussed using cointegration vector autoregression in the paper. The study shows that there exists a long-standing and stable relationship between REER of RMB and trade balance; the fall of the real effective exchange rate of RMB is one of the reasons of the increasing trade surplus, however, the influences it brings are less than domestic GDP and trade partner’s GDP do. So, increasing the flexibility of the exchange rate of RMB, broadening the exchange rate’s float space between RMB and dollar are a necessary part of the package policies in solving the trade surplus. Key words: RMB appreciation, real effective exchange rate, trade surplus, cointegration vector autoregression Résumé: La relation entre le taux de change réel (TCR) de RMB de 1997 à 2006 et le surplus commercial de la Chine avec les autres partenaires commerciaux est discutée, en utilisant l’autoregression de vecteur de cointegration, dans l’article présent. L’étude montre qu’il existe un lien stable de longue date entre TCR de RMB et la balance commerciale, et que la baisse de TCR de RMB est une des raisons du surplus commercial croissant. Néanmoins, ses influences sont moins importantes que celles de PIB de notre pays et des partenaires. Ainsi, renforcer la flexibilité du taux de change de RMB, élargir l’espace de flottement du taux de change entre RMB et le dollar sont nécessaire pour résoudre le problème de surplus commercial. Abstract: Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment is dedicated to measuring the last unobserved neutrino mixing angle theta_13. The predicted precision on sin^2(2theta_13) is 0.01 at 90% confidence level. This document briefly reviews the measurement method and detector construction status. The first two anti-neutrino detectors' dry run result is also discussed. The Daya Bay near hall data taking is expected to commence in the summer of 2011 and the data taking of all of the three halls in the summer of 2012.

Abstract: For the purpose of the monitor system in digital protection, the embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) and the embedded GUI (Graphical User Interface) is introduced to design the monitor system. Combining the necessity and the application value of the operation system, the choice of embedded Linux and Qt/Embedded is completely viable for the monitor system in digital protection for generator-transformer sets. The design with embedded Linux and embedded GUI enriches system information, increases developing efficiency and improve the generality.
Speech Signal Recovery Based on Source Separation and Noise Suppression  [PDF]

In this paper, a speech signal recovery algorithm is presented for a personalized voice command automatic recognition system in vehicle and restaurant environments. This novel algorithm is able to separate a mixed speech source from multiple speakers, detect presence/absence of speakers by tracking the higher magnitude portion of speech power spectrum and adaptively suppress noises. An automatic speech recognition (ASR) process to deal with the multi-speaker task is designed and implemented. Evaluation tests have been carried out by using the speech da- tabase NOIZEUS and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves impressive performance improvements.

Abstract: The nonlinear multidimensional knapsack problem is defined as the minimization of a convex function with multiple linear constraints. The methods developed for nonlinear multidimensional programming problems are often applied to solve the nonlinear multidimensional knapsack problems, but they are inefficient or limited since most of them do not exploit the characteristics of the knapsack problems. In this paper, by establishing structural properties of the continuous separable nonlinear multidimensional knapsack problem, we develop a multi-tier binary solution method for solving the continuous nonlinear multidimensional knapsack problems with general structure. The computational complexity is polynomial in the number of variables. We presented two examples to illustrate the general application of our method and we used statistical results to show the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract: An interval linear traffic planning model is developed for supporting vehicle emissions limited under uncertainty. The interval linear traffic planning model can address uncertainties of traffic system and vehicle emissions related to system costs and limitation of emission. The interval linear traffic planning model is applicable to complex traffic system. One virtual city as our study object was taken by using the interval linear traffic planning model. In this study, one virtual case and a scenario are provided for three planning periods. The results indicate that the interval linear traffic planning model can effectively reduce the vehicles emission and provide strategies for authorities to deal with problems of transportation system.
Determination of Eight Sudan Dyes in Chili Powder by UPLC-MS/MS  [PDF]

Sudan dyes are synthetic azo dyes which are widely used in industry. Although they are not allowed in foodstuffs, they have been found contaminating in different food products and their presence is regularly reported. It is assumed that these appearances are due to cross-contamination or adulteration. In this paper, we present a newly developed fast and sensitive method for the quantification of eight Sudan dyes, using liquid-liquid extraction and UPLC-MS/MS analysis. The calibration curves were linear over the range of 0.1-25 mg/kg. Mean recovery for the eight Sudan dyes ranged from 80.7% to 104.4%, and with the inter-day and intra-day precisions ranged from 2.24% to 12.2%. The method was successfully applied in the determination of Sudan dyes in chili powder of 10 samples.
