How Do Companies Adjust their Independent Directors after a Mishap--Evidence from Independent Directors’ Background  [PDF]

Abstract: Selection of independent directors in China’s listed companies is a two-way choice dominated by listed companies. Thereafter, most companies adjust their independent directors after a mishap (e.g. receiving qualified audit opinions or punished by regulatory authorities). This paper investigates the behavior of how companies adjust their independent directors from the perspective of independent directors’ background, by using data of Chinese listed companies to which a mishap happened between 2002 and 2004 as our target sample. Evidence shows that listed companies will increase independent directors with accounting background significantly after receiving qualified audit opinions or punished by regulatory authorities, for the purpose of mitigating distress from capital market and medium and minority shareholders, which highlights the supervising role of independent directors with accounting background. Besides, these companies enjoy significantly contemporaneous return after the adjustment.

Abstract:

Geographical Information System (GIS) always plays an integral role in LBS systems. But it comes with technology problems, such as less flexible, low efficiency, no redundancy of existing geographic information of application configuration which has high entry cost. At same time, indoors positioning is attracting more and more attention from research domain where GPS-like systems do not work. By RSSI location fingerprint data that sampling from the actual WSN environment, this article analyzed RF signal propagation characteristics in indoor from the point of view of the indoor positioning, and analyzed some factors that may affect the positioning error, which provided a theoretical basis for the positioning algorithm design and positioning system deployment. The aim of this paper is also to present a lightweight, efficient and scalable microkernel plug-in geospatial information application system and its implementation method for GIS in LBS design and practice. In this paper a software model called Resource loading manager (RLM) is designed. Through the RLM efficient allocation of geographic information resources and security management could be achieved.

Abstract: By contrasting the traditional way in which GIS was completed that comes with less flexible, low efficiency, and lack redundancy which cause high entry cost, the fast development of microkernel plug-in technology provides the lightweight, efficient and scalable solution to Geographical Information System (GIS). This paper is to reveal the potential of microkernel plug-in geospatial information processing technology in GIS design and practice, with the acceptance and usage of function model called Resource loading manager(RLM) for GIS applications, which provides a possible solution to overcome the GIS’s high cost issue. After the short review of microkernel plug-in technology, the possibility of GIS design with microkernel is analyzed. This paper also introduced the composition of the whole system and the design of GIS service platform based on middle-ware in detail.

Abstract: In the title polymer, [ZnCl2(C11H8N2O)]n, the ZnII atom lies on a twofold rotation axis and has a distorted tetrahedral ZnCl2N2 geometry involving two chloride donors and two N-atom donors from μ2-bridging bis(pyridin-3-yl)methanone ligands, which also have twofold symmetry. A zigzag chain structure is formed, extending along (001). Each chain is surrounded by three others which are interconnected through weak C=O...πpyridyl [O...centroid = 2.999 (3) ] and πpyridyl–πpyridyl interactions [minimum ring centroid separation = 4.014 (2) ], giving a three-dimensional framework.

Abstract: Bilayer graphene and its thicker cousins with Rhombohedral stacking have attracted considerable attention because of their susceptibility to a variety of broken chiral symmetry states. Due to large density-of-states and quantized Berry phases near their gapless band touching points, each spin-valley flavor spontaneously transfers charge between layers to yield opening of energy gaps in quasiparticle spectra and spreading of momentum-space Berry curvatures. In this article we review the development of theories that predicted such chiral symmetry breaking and classified the possible topological many-body ground states, and the observations in recent experiments that are in reasonable agreement with these theories.

Abstract:

An integrated scheme of emergency DC power support which is based on dominant center of Inertia DCOI is proposed to improve power system transient stability. The inter-area speed differences equivalent by dominant center of inertia alleviates the main weakness of the traditional signal which is made of the frequencies at both sides and is represent of abnormal information of the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the power system based on a model in which two AC systems are connected by a HVDC Link. Sichuan Power Grid connected with Southwest Power Grid by Deyang-Baoji HVDC project is used to testify the method. The simulation results show that the control strategy can significantly advance the transient stability of AC/DC system through extended equal area criterion (EEAC).

Inhibitory Activity of Ethanol Extract from Artemisia argyi on a Clinical Isolate of Staphylococcus aureus  [PDF]

Abstract: As a traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of many disorders, Artemisia argyi has shown many valuable bioactivities, but little is known about its effect on Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, the growth, the biofilm formation and the pathogenicity of S. aureus cultivated with or without ethanol extract of A. argyi were tested using microtitre plate assay, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) system and mice infection assay. Results showed that the growth and the biofilm formation of S. aureus in the test group with ethanol extract of A. argyi were significantly lower than those of the control group without ethanol extract of A. argyi. With CLSM system we could observe that the biofilm structure of the test group had looser and less biomass compared with the control group. After infection of S. aureus, the survival of mice in test group that were given 0.2 mL 100 mg/mL ethanol extracts of A. argyi was higher than the control group. Histopathological analyses showed that the tissue damage of mice in test group was less than that in control group. These results suggested that ethanol extract of A. argyi had inhibitory effect on S. aureus and could protect mice from death induced by S. aureus infection.

Abstract: The isolation and culture of conventional detection method of salmonella can not meet the testing requirements of quick and easy detection at the grassroots level. In this study, we prepare the fluorescent nanoparticles as a marker, covalently conjugate with monoclonal antibodies of Salmonella pullorum. The whole Salmonella pullorum antigen and goat anti-mouse antibody sprayed on the nitrocellulose membranes are used as test line and control line. The fluorescence nanoparticles immune based lateral flow strips are made according to the principle of antigen-antibody immune response. The test strips may interpret results within 30 min. The results of the salmonella A, S. agona, S. chester and S. arechavaleta are positive, including, S. agona for weakly positive. After analysis, it is found that in addition to the salmonella of group A, the other positive salmonella are in group B. But it is negative of S. derby, S. rissen, and other 6
Classification and Quality Evaluation of Tobacco Leaves Based on Image Processing and Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation

Abstract: Most of classification, quality evaluation or grading of the flue-cured tobacco leaves are manually operated, which relies on the judgmental experience of experts, and inevitably limited by personal, physical and environmental factors. The classification and the quality evaluation are therefore subjective and experientially based. In this paper, an automatic classification method of tobacco leaves based on the digital image processing and the fuzzy sets theory is presented. A grading system based on image processing techniques was developed for automatically inspecting and grading flue-cured tobacco leaves. This system uses machine vision for the extraction and analysis of color, size, shape and surface texture. Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation provides a high level of confidence in decision making based on the fuzzy logic. The neural network is used to estimate and forecast the membership function of the features of tobacco leaves in the fuzzy sets. The experimental results of the two-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) show that the accuracy rate of classification is about 94% for the trained tobacco leaves, and the accuracy rate of the non-trained tobacco leaves is about 72%. We believe that the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is a viable way for the automatic classification and quality evaluation of the tobacco leaves.
