This study investigated the effects of different concentrations of fullerenol on cultured rat hippocampal neurons. Methods and results: Fullerenol at low concentrations significantly enhanced hippocampal neuron viability as tested by MTT assay and Hoechst 33342/propidium iodide double stain detection. At high concentrations, fullerenol induced apoptosis confirmed by Comet assay and assessment of caspase proteins. Conclusion: These findings suggest that fullerenol promotes cell death and protects against cell damage, depending on the concentration present. The concentration-dependent effects of fullerenol were mainly due to its influence on the reduction-oxidation pathway.

Abstract: Evoked potentials (EPs) have been widely used to quantify neurological system properties. Tra-ditional EP analysis methods are developed under the condition that the background noises in EP are Gaussian distributed. Alpha stable distribution, a generalization of Gaussian, is better for modeling impulsive noises than Gaussian distribution in biomedical signal proc-essing. Conventional blind separation and es-timation method of evoked potentials is based on second order statistics or high order Statis-tics. Conventional blind separation and estima-tion method of evoked potentials is based on second order statistics (SOS). In this paper, we propose a new algorithm based on minimum dispersion criterion and fractional lower order statistics. The simulation experiments show that the proposed new algorithm is more robust than the conventional algorithm.

In this paper, the author firstly pointed out how many kinds of risks the SMEs were facing, and then analyzed the demand for competitive intelligence in the risk prevention of SMEs. Based on that, the model of competitive intelligence monitoring in the risk prevention of SMEs were put forward at last.

Abstract:

This paper is contributed to study two new integrable four-component systems reduced from a multi-component generation of Camassa-Holm equation. Some double peakon solutions of both systems are described in an explicit formula by the method of variation of constant for ordinary differential equations. These double peakon solutions are established in weak sense. The dynamic behaviors of the obtained double peakon solutions are illustrated by some figures.

Abstract: Copyright protection of digital movie is becoming increasingly important with increasing developing of the information technology. In China, unlimited replication and rapid propagation of the network makes it increasingly difficult to monitor the copyright piracy and illegal dissemination. Currently, encryption and tracking technology is predominantly used for copyright protection of digital film. The law is also committed to combating piracy and protecting copyright. But neither technical protection nor legal protection can achieve the protective effect that is necessary. Every year, the industry loses billions of dollars in revenue and faces the potential loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs. And Chinese laws do not define the consumer’s responsibilities. So the legal protection is a little weak in reality. This paper argues that there is a need for an alliance of technology and law. Copyright owners actively carry out technical protection to minimize the impact of piracy. Simultaneously, when the technical protection fails or has loopholes, the law shall punish the infringer severely according to the technical data and proof, and deter the offender. This is the better way to protect the copyright of digital film.
Effect of Calyx Extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa against Cadmium-Induced Liver Damage

Abstract: This study was conducted to elucidate the protective properties of calyx extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa against cadmium toxicity. A total of 16 male rats grouped into 4 were used for this study that lasted for 2 weeks. Group A animals received water and served as the control. Animals in groups B, C and D received cadmium sulfate 10mg/kg body weight orally, once daily throughout the study period. Group C and D animals additionally received calyx extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa twice daily orally at 2.5 and 4.6g/kg body weight respectively. Animals in group B were observed to have continuous loss of hair and were less active compared with the control. Animals in groups C and D were relatively active. Serum activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) showed significant increase (P<0.05) in group B compared with the control group; indicating the hepatotoxic effect of cadmium. Serum ALT, AST and ALP activities of animals in group C were 24.53±2.80, 53.25±9.46 and 234.60±35.63 respectively. Serum ALT, AST and ALP activities of animals in group D were respectively 22.09±2.05, 46.75±4.50 and 165.60±22.54. Even though the activities of the serum enzymes in groups C and D showed significant increase (P<0.05) as compared with the control, they are significantly lower (P<0.05) compared with group B. There is no significant difference (P<0.05) in serum bilirubin levels for groups C, D and B as compared with the control. The decrease in the activities of serum ALT, AST and ALP of groups C and D that received the calyx extract as compared with group B indicates the potential protective action of the extract against cadmium toxicity. The results thus indicate that the calyx extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa has potential protective properties against cadmium-induced liver damage. Formant analysis for Kiswahili vowels

Abstract: Vowels' spectral characteristics in a language have been studied for suitability in speech recognition by using formants analysis technique. Other techniques do mostly require large computer memories for speech processing and analysis. In this paper, the formant analysis for Kiswahili vowels has been presented. The spectrographs for each vowel and their respective average formant frequencies are tabled. The distribution of formants for the vowels modelled in the form of an articulatory model is shown. The results show that there is a big separation of formant frequencies among the Kiswahili vowels that signify the suitability for automatic speech recognition. This will give a lower bound for the canonical norm for a relative differential form on an arithmetic surface, which proves a Height Inequality on the arithmetic surface.
