Turkish Journal of Oncology , 2007,
Abstract: OBJECTIVES: Ege University Cancer data is being collected by Ege University Cancer Fight against Cancer, Practice and Research Center within the “ zmir Cancer Incidence and Data Collection Project” which initiated in 1991. Gender, tumor type, stage and their relationship with residence place were analyzed in 34134 cases that was diagnosed cancer and treated in our hospital between 1992-2004. METHODS: Of the patients, 56.6% were male and 43.4% were women. Stage distribution was as following: 31.6% local, 43% local advanced and 25.4% metastatic disease. RESULTS: It was observed that men compared to women (p=0.00), patients who live outside zmir compared to patients living in zmir (p=0.00) presented to the hospital with more advanced disease. When residence area, stage and gender were evaluated together, it was determined that women (p=0.011) and men (p=0.04) who were living in zmir have been diagnosed at early stage. According to tumor groups, while patients with larynx, prostate or breast cancer who were living in zmir has been diagnosed at early stage (p=0.05, p=0.008, p=0.000, respectively), no significant correlation could be detected among patients with lung, colorectal, cervix and endometrial cancer. CONCLUSION: People who live in cities benefit from proximity to developed diagnose and medical centers and the effects of screening and training programmes are observed over women. Cancer training programmes should be enlarged for men besides rural areas.

Turkish Journal of Oncology , 2008,
Abstract: OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the genitourinary symptoms and the risk of urinary tract infections in patients with gynecological malignancy treated with radiotherapy. METHODS: Mid-stream specimens of urine were collected and urine cultures were performed in 45 patients with gynecological malignancy; genitourinary symptoms were recorded during pelvic radiotherapy. RESULTS: Before the treatment, urinary tract infections were detected in four patients, while during the treatment seven patients had positive urine cultures. Dysuria was recorded in five patients before radiotherapy, and at the end of treatment, 40 cases experienced grade 1 or 2 dysuria. No significant relationship was detected between urinary tract infection and clinical genitourinary symptoms. CONCLUSION: The most effective method to define urinary tract infection in patients with gynecologic malignancies is urine culture during the treatment. Routine prophylactic antibiotherapy is not recommended because of the low risk of infection during radiotherapy.

Turkish Journal of Oncology , 2006,
Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the preradiotherapy selenium levels, the factors affecting these levels and its relation with the treatment response in locally advanced lung, head and neck and cervix carcinoma. METHODS: Patient characteristics, preradiotherapy selenium levels and treatment response were evaluated in 33 patients who were treated with radical radiotherapy. Serum selenium level was analyzed and measured by using Perkin Elmer Atomic Absorption Spectrometer and hydrur system. Treatment response was assessed according to World Health Organization criteria. RESULTS: Median age was 57 (range: 37-80 years). Twenty-three patients (69.7%) were male and ten patients (30.3%) were female. Eighteen patients (54.5%) had lung cancer, 8 patients had (24.2%) head and neck cancer and 7 patients (21.2%) had cervix carcinoma. Preradiotherapy mean selenium level was found to be 102.2 μg/L (range: 53-141 μg/L). The selenium level was also significantly low in patients with low KPS and low Hb level (p=0.04, p=0.00, respectively). When the relation between the selenium level and tumor response was evaluated it was found that as the selenium levels increased response to treatment also increased (p=0.02). CONCLUSION: In the present study it was concluded that low selenium levels affected the treatment response unfavorably and selenium levels were found to be associated with KPS status and Hb levels.
Breast disorders in adolescents
Zeynep
Turk Pediatri Ar?ivi , 2011,
Abstract: Breast disorders in adolescents constitute a heterogeneous group of lesions, and usually include benign lesions. Developmental disorders such as asimetry, amastia, amasia, athelia, polythelia; juvenil hyperthrophy, inflammatory disorders (mastitis, nipple discharge, breast abcess), and mass lesions can be seen in the adolescent age group. Fibroadenoma is the most common lesion of the breast. Malignant lesions of the breast in adolescents are rare. Malignant breast masses more commonly result from metastases than from primary lesions. Is Street Art a Crime? An Attempt at Examining Street Art Using Criminology  [PDF]
Zeynep Alpaslan
Advances in Applied Sociology (AASoci) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/aasoci.2012.21007
Abstract: A clear and basic definition is the fundamental element in understanding, thus explaining any social scientific concept. Street art is a social phenomenon, characterized by its illegal nature, which social scientists from several subjects have increasingly been examining, interpreting and discussing for the past 50 years. Even though the concept itself has been defined much more clearly over the years, its standing concerning whether it is a crime or form of art is still a borderline issue. This paper attempts to first try to define street art under a type of crime, then examine it using criminological perspective, with criminological and deviance theories in order to understand and explain it better using an example, the KüF Project from Ankara Turkey.

It may occur in many types. One of the insurance fraud types is self-cutting of the insured for insurance claim. However it sounds unbelievable, it is a fact which is getting more prevalent day by day. In this study it is aimed to provide an overview of the type, scale and impact of insurance fraud in Turkey, and particularly self-cutting for the insurance claim over a case study. Insurance fraud has an impact not only on insurers but also on the insureds. Therefore reducing and deterring the insurance fraud is significant, and it is also aimed to offer the actions to reduce insurance fraud in this study. Insurance fraud has an impact not only on insurance companies but also on the insured. Therefore reducing and deterring the insurance is significant. In this study it is aimed to provide an overview of the type, scale and impact of insurance abuses in Turkey and the UK. It is also aimed to specify the measures and the institutions on fighting against insurance abuse in Turkey and in the UK as well.
Fluctuating Asymmetry and Steroid Hormones: A Review
Zeynep Benderlioglu
Symmetry , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/sym2020541
Abstract: Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) represents random, minor deviations from perfect symmetry in paired traits. Because the development of the left and right sides of a paired trait is presumably controlled by an identical set of genetic instructions, these small imperfections are considered to reflect genetic and environmental perturbations experienced during ontogeny. The current paper aims to identify possible neuroendocrine mechanisms, namely the actions of steroid hormones that may impact the development of asymmetrical characters as a response to various stressors. In doing so, it provides a review of the published studies on the influences of glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens on FA and concomitant changes in other health and fitness indicators. It follows the premise that hormonal measures may provide direct, non-invasive indicators of how individuals cope with adverse life conditions, strengthening the associations between FA and health, fitness, and behavior.

Turkish Studies , 2009,
Abstract: Eighteen is regarded as highly important and sacred by Mevlevism because Hayy, one of Allah’s 99 names, constitutes eighteen with the method of ebced; consonants of the phrase “bismillahirrahmanirrahim” are eighteen and Mevlana composed the first eighteen couplets of Mesnevi by himself. As a Mevlevi poet Sheikh Galip considered eighteen in his written work too. This article aims to explain number of eighteen and its multiples in the poems of Sheikh Galip’s “Hüsn ü A k”. On sekiz say s , Allah' n 99 isminden biri olan Hayy’ n ebced hesab ile on sekize kar l k gelmesi, besmelenin sessiz harflerinin adedinin on sekiz olu u ve Mevlana'n n Mesnev adl eserinin ilk on sekiz beytini bizzat kendisinin yazmas sebebiyle Mevlev ler i in nemli ve kutsal say l r. eyh Galip de Mevlev bir air olarak Hüsn ü A k adl eserinde on sekiz say s na nem vermi tir.
