Water-Energy Prototype Model for the NEMS Modeling Platform: Thermoelectric Water Demand and Its Implications on Regional Electricity Market  [PDF]

Abstract: A simplified energy-water prototype model has been developed at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) as a part of a larger effort to comprehensively model energy-water interactions. The NETL Water-Energy Model (NWEM) prototype passively couples a variety of data on water supply, water availability, and power plant water use with the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) power generation forecasts. NWEM operates at a watershed level and its efficacy in resolving local water supply and water-use trade-offs was demonstrated using data from Sandia National Laboratory along with a water supply scenario projected by the World Resources Institute (WRI). The prototype model only passively utilized a forecast of power generation from an existing forecast; the model’s choices were limited to purchases or retrofitting to meet future water supply constraints. NETL is continuing to integrate the water sub-module into the NEMS framework, which will allow active interaction between the water market and power markets, extending the industry’s ability to re-dispatch its generating units with the price of water as one of the variable costs.
Integrative Analysis of the Mitochondrial Proteome in Yeast

Abstract: In this study yeast mitochondria were used as a model system to apply, evaluate, and integrate different genomic approaches to define the proteins of an organelle. Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry applied to purified mitochondria identified 546 proteins. By expression analysis and comparison to other proteome studies, we demonstrate that the proteomic approach identifies primarily highly abundant proteins. By expanding our evaluation to other types of genomic approaches, including systematic deletion phenotype screening, expression profiling, subcellular localization studies, protein interaction analyses, and computational predictions, we show that an integration of approaches moves beyond the limitations of any single approach. We report the success of each approach by benchmarking it against a reference set of known mitochondrial proteins, and predict approximately 700 proteins associated with the mitochondrial organelle from the integration of 22 datasets. We show that a combination of complementary approaches like deletion phenotype screening and mass spectrometry can identify over 75% of the known mitochondrial proteome. These findings have implications for choosing optimal genome-wide approaches for the study of other cellular systems, including organelles and pathways in various species. Furthermore, our systematic identification of genes involved in mitochondrial function and biogenesis in yeast expands the candidate genes available for mapping Mendelian and complex mitochondrial disorders in humans.

Robust Face Recognition through Local Graph Matching

Abstract: A novel face recognition method is proposed, in which face images are represented by a set of local labeled graphs, each containing information about the appearance and geometry of a 3-tuple of face feature points, extracted using Local Feature Analysis (LFA) technique. Our method automatically learns a model set and builds a graph space for each individual. A two-stage method for optimal matching between the graphs extracted from a probe image and the trained model graphs is proposed. The recognition of each probe face image is performed by assigning it to the trained individual with the maximum number of references. Our approach achieves perfect result on the ORL face set and an accuracy rate of 98.4% on the FERET face set, which shows the superiority of our method over all considered state-of-the-art methods. I

Abstract: In psychopharmacology of depression, we observe two ways of research. One group is focused on catecholamines action. Second one fixes attention on neuronal morphogenesis and synaptic plasticity. The intimate connection of astrocytes, neurons and synaptic endings determines glial participation in neural homeostasis. Consequently this situation enlarges the role of astrocytes in the CNS synaptic plasticity. Brain Derived Neurotrophic factor and its receptor TrkB suppose to coordinate both of the above mentioning signaling pathways in depression disturbances. In our experiment, we have exploited striatal tissue because in our opinion this structure is misjudged in pathophysiology of depression alas; Several hypothesis proposed striatum as important in future intention activity structure. RT-PCR analysis was used to determine D1, BDNF and TrkB mRNA expression in cultured striatal astroglial cells. Administration of three representative antidepressants (ADs) like amitriptyline, moclobemide and sertraline to astroglial culture medium increase the D1, BDNF/TrkB mRNA expression. Our previous study showed that the stimulation of cAMP to CREB pathway after D1 receptors excitation constituted a common response to ADs. The present results signify that D1, BDNF/TrkB link which is next neural track (after cAMP/PKA) involved in the CNS adaptation to external conditions altered by chronic ADs treatment. Moreover, the striatum tissue appears to be important formation which takes an active part in antidepressant action thus essential in depression disorder etiology.
Nd Isotope Mapping of Crustal Terranes in the Parent-Clova Area, Quebec: Implications for the Evolution of the Laurentian Margin in the Central Grenville Province

Abstract: Over 100 new Nd isotope analyses for the central Grenville Province in the Parent-Clova region of Quebec help fill a major gap in understanding the crustal accretion history of the province. Nd model ages show that the Parent-Clova region consists of three crustal blocks: the Archean parautochthon in the north; a central block with mixed ages interpreted as an ensialic arc; and a southerly block forming an extension of the Mesoproterozoic Quebecia arc terrane. The Allochthon Boundary Thrust is believed to define the edge of the Archean parautochthon, which is bordered for a distance of 300 km by the ensialic arc block, within which model ages decrease consistently away from the craton. A similar negative correlation between Nd model age and distance from the craton is seen in published data for the Algonquin terrane in Ontario, but with a lower range of model ages. These comparisons show that in the Parent-Clova region, a Mesoproterozoic ensialic arc was established directly on the Archean margin, but further west, the Mesoproterozoic arc was built on a younger margin consisting of accreted Palaeoproterozoic arc crust. The use of large Nd data sets allows these distinct regional growth patterns to become clear and, hence, allows an understanding of Mesoproterozoic crustal evolution in the province as a whole.
The Philippines: The Weak State and the Global War on Terror

Abstract: The Philippines is clearly one of the principal “front-line” states with Southeast Asia’s identification as the second front of the “global war on terror.” Its participation in and strong support for this campaign was commended strongly in the international stage especially by the government of the United States. At the same time, however, this policy was received with mixed feelings within the country itself. There are strong and legitimate fears that the Philippine government’s support for the United States places the stability of the country over the short- to medium-term in jeopardy. This is particularly important as the international campaign against terror has come at an inopportune time. The Philippines is currently facing multi-faceted challenges that the government is unable to address because it cannot mobilize the requisite economic and political resources. Terrorism is not the main cause of the persistent instability in the Philippines. The growth and persistence of terrorism in the country, in fact, is indicative of the weak Philippine state.
Bilateralism in the Changing Asia-Pacific Environment

Abstract: The Security structure of the Asia-Pacific during the Cold War is characterized by a web of interlocking bilateral alliances woven by the United States. Through this ‘hub and spokes’ mechanism, American influence in the region was guaranteed as states dealt with one another by means of their respective bilateral linkages with Washington. This arrangement effectively prevented regional states and actors from challenging the hegemony of the United States over the conduct of regional security affairs.The end of the Cold War, the consequent decline of American military presence in the region, and the emergence of new geostrategic players have made this network of bilateral alliances inadequate, if not outdated, for the complex and uncertain post-Cold War international system. This, in turn, necessitates a rethinking of bilateralism and its place in the new regional security environment. With Philippine-United States Relations as backdrop, it is argued that until multilateral mechanisms are designated to help diffuse crises and, in conditions of conflict, actually enforced the uneven distribution of power among states will continue to provide the reason for small states to seek the assistance of stronger states through bilateral security arrangement. Bilateral alliances with neighbors and other regional actors, should therefore, be enhanced with the view of complementing multilateral efforts towards security cooperation. In the last analysis, however, while bilateralism remains an important aspect of Asia Pacific security, a collective effort is indispensable for ensuring regional stability.

A Born-Oppenheimer Expansion in a Neighborhood of a Renner-Teller Intersection

Abstract: We perform a rigorous mathematical analysis of the bending modes of a linear triatomic molecule that exhibits the Renner-Teller effect. Assuming the potentials are smooth, we prove that the wave functions and energy levels have asymptotic expansions in powers of epsilon, where epsilon^4 is the ratio of an electron mass to the mass of a nucleus. To prove the validity of the expansion, we must prove various properties of the leading order equations and their solutions. The leading order eigenvalue problem is analyzed in terms of a parameter b, which is equivalent to the parameter originally used by Renner. For 0 < b < 1, we prove self-adjointness of the leading order Hamiltonian, that it has purely discrete spectrum, and that its eigenfunctions and their derivatives decay exponentially. Perturbation theory and finite difference calculations suggest that the ground bending vibrational state is involved in a level crossing near b = 0.925. We also discuss the degeneracy of the eigenvalues. Because of the crossing, the ground state is degenerate for 0 < b < 0.925 and non-degenerate for 0.925 < b < 1.
