Preservation Property and Decay Kinetic of Polyurethane Immobilized Nitrifying Bacteria Pellets  [PDF]

Abstract: The preservation methods of polyurethane immobilized nitrifying bacteria pellets which had been enriched in laboratory were provided. Factors such as temperature, pH and light, which affect the nitrification activity of polyurethane immobilized pellets, were investigated. The result showed that dark, deionized water and low temperature is suitable for polyurethane immobilized nitrifying bacteria pellets’ long term preservation.
Determination of glyoxal and glyoxalic acid in aldehyde solution by high performance liquid chromatography

Abstract: The hydrazones have the absorption in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectral region. The hydrazones can be formed by the reaction of aldehyde group and dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) in acidic solution. The determination of glyoxal and glyoxalic acid in aldehyde solution was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The proper derivatization conditions were as follows: the reaction temperature of 70 ℃, the pH of the system of 1.75; the molar ratio of DNPH to carbonyl of 6, the reaction time of 150 min. The saturated concentration of glyoxal dihydrazone in acetonitrile solution at pH 1.75 and 20 ℃ was 20.2 mg/L. The standard curves for glyoxal and glyoxalic acid both had good linear relations in the ranges of 2-20 mg/L and 10-100 mg/L, respectively. The glyoxal and glyoxalic acid contents in the solution of oxidation of acetaldehyde to glyoxal by nitric acid were determined by this method, the repeatabilities of analysis results were excellent and the relative error compared to chemical analysis of glyoxal was 1.77% . The spiked recoveries of glyoxal and glyoxalic acid were 99.6% -103.3% and 98.1% -102.4% , respectively. The method is simple, accurate and efficient for determining aldehydes and dicarbonyl compounds.
Surveillance of Schistosoma japonicum Infection in Domestic Ruminants in the Dongting Lake Region, Hunan Province, China

Abstract: Background Schistosomiasis japonica is prevalent in Asian countries and it remains a major public health problem in China. The major endemic foci are the marsh and lake regions of southern China, particularly the Dongting Lake region bordering Hunan and Hubei provinces, and the Poyang Lake region in Jiangxi province. Domestic ruminants, especially bovines, have long been considered to play a major role in the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum to humans. Methods and Findings A miracidial hatching technique was used to investigate the prevalence of S. japonicum infections in domestic ruminants and field feces collected from two towns located to the south and east of Dongting Lake, Hunan province, between 2005 and 2010. The overall prevalence of infection was not significantly reduced from 4.93% in 2005 to 3.64% in 2008, after which it was maintained at this level. Bovines comprised 23.5–58.2% of the total infected ruminants, while goats comprised 41.8–76.5%. Infection rates in cattle and goats were significantly higher than those found in buffalo in most study years. The prevalence in buffalo younger than three years was significantly higher than that in those aged over three years. All the positive field samples of feces were derived from bovines in Nandashan. In Matang Town, 61.22% of the positive field feces were from bovines, while the rest were from goats. The positive rates for field feces were approximately the same in April and November/October. Conclusions The present study found that bovines and goats are major sources of S. japonicum infection in the Dongting lake region and there was age-related resistance in buffalo. Both bovines and goats should be treated equally when controlling S. japonicum infections in the Dongting lake region. It is essential to conduct an additional mass treatment in late March or early April, in addition to the original treatment scheme.

Abstract: The study on the stability is a first problem in costruction of harbour on the tidal channel in the mud silt coast. In this paper, environmental background of Xiyang tidal channel is firstly analysed, then based on the data from the practical investigation, the stability of Xiyang tidal channel is comprehensively studied using manifold analysis methods including: GIS, remote sensing, sediments (grain size, mineral and foraminifera), marine hydrodynamic conditions and so on. Based on the above works, the conclusions drawn are as follows: 1. Xiyang tidal channel, located between Wanggang coast tending gradually to stable and radial submarine sand ridges under a dynamic equilibrium state, has an environmental background beneficial to its stability. After the loss of a great deal of sediments directly from the Huanghe River in 1855, Xiyang channel began extending, widening and deepening southwards. 2. The tide in Xiyang channel is strong, with a maximum tidal velocity of more than 2 50 m/s. Ebb current velocity is generally larger than flood current velocity. The net transport of sediment by tidal current is mainly towards the outside of Xiyang channel. The hydrodynamic conditions in Xiyang channel are favorable to maintaining water depth of the channel. 3. Overall, Xiyang tidal channel is under the stable condition, but the stability of different parts in Xiyang channel is a little bit different. The south mouth of the east channel is the least stable in Xiyang channel, but the west channel, especially its south deep trough, is more stable.
The Genesis of Tropical Cyclone Bilis (2000) Associated with Cross-equatorial Surges

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore how a tropical cyclone forms from a pre-existing large-scale depression which has been observed and associated with cross-equatorial surges in the western North Pacific. Tropical cyclone Bilis (2000) was selected as the case to study. The research data used are from the results of the non-hydrostatic mesoscale model (MM5), which has successfully simulated the transformation of a pre-existing weak large-scale tropical depression into a strong tropical storm. The scale separation technique is used to separate the synoptic-scale and sub-synoptic-scale fields from the model output fields. The scale-separated fields show that the pre-existing synoptic-scale tropical depression and the sub-synoptic scale tropical cyclone formed later were different scale systems from beginning to end. It is also shown that the pre-existing synoptic-scale tropical depression did not contract to become the tropical cyclone. A series of weak, sub-synoptic-scale low and high pressure systems appeared and disappeared in the synoptic-scale depression, with one of the low systems near the center of the synoptic-scale depression having deepened to become the tropical cyclone. The roles of the synoptic-scale flow and the sub-synoptic scale disturbances in the formation of the tropical cyclone are investigated by diagnoses of the scale-separated vertical vorticity equation. The results show that the early development of the sub-synoptic scale vortex was fundamentally dependent on the strengthening synoptic-scale environmental depression. The depression was strengthened by cross-equatorial surges, which increased the convergence of the synoptic-scale depression at low levels and triggered the formation of the tropical cyclone.
Washing and Dyeing Wastewater Treatment by Combined Nano Flocculation and Photocatalysis Processes  [PDF]

The research investigated the performance of combined process (flocculation pretreatment-pho- to catalysis). The characteristics of nano flocculation and photocataly were evaluated by simulated dye and surfactant wastewater. In the coagulation and settling period, decolorization rate of five dyes wastewater by nano flocculant was higher than 95%. In the photocatalytic period, degradation of twelve sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate reached 33%. Washing and dyeing wastewater treated by combined process conformed to the “textile dyeing and finishing industry back to the water quality standard” (FZ/T 01107-2011). The results showed that the combined process was highly advanced treatment for washing and dying wastewater.

Abstract: The characteristics of helicity in a hurricane are presented by calculating the MM5 model output in addition to theoretical analysis. It is found that helicity in a hurricane mainly depends on its horizontal component, whose magnitude is about 100 to 1000 times larger than its vertical component. It is also found that helicity is approximately conserved in the hurricane. Since the fluid has the intention to adjust the wind shear to satisfy the conservation of helicity, the horizontal vorticity is even larger than the vertical vorticity, and the three-dimensional vortices slant to the horizontal plane except in the inner eye. There are significant horizontal vortices and inhomogeneous helical flows in the hurricane. The formation of the spiral rainband is discussed by using the law of horizontal helical flows. It is closely related to the horizontal strong vortices and inhomogeneous helical flows.
Mode of débitage and technical cognition of hominids at the Guanyindong site

Abstract: Exploring and interpreting the mode of cognition and behavioral patterns of prehistoric hunter-gatherers is always one of the main goals of current Paleolithic research. In the 1940s, French prehistorians proposed the technological method for studying lithic assemblages which opened a brand-new perspective on the prehistoric domain. In the 1960s, French ethnographer and anthropologist André Leroi-Gourhan proposed the concept “cha ne opératoire” and established the theory of lithic technological study. After the 1980s, the concept “cha ne opératoire” was substituted for two different but complementary concepts: techno-cognition and techno-economy, which contributed not only to revealing the technical knowledge and know-how applied during lithic production but also to interpreting the technical behavior of prehistoric hunter-gatherers from social and economic viewpoints. The lithic technological study of the Guanyindong site, presented in this paper, was carried out for the first time by applying lithic technological method developed by French prehistorians to the Chinese materials. Our analytical results demonstrated that the débitage system of Guanyindong is quite distinct from the concept Levallois largely used in Europe, Near-East and Africa. The differentiation between these two débitage modes may contribute to exploring and interpreting the relationship in Middle Paleolithic between China and Europe, Near-East and Africa.

Abstract: Since the first discovery of Shuidonggou (SDG) culture, its western characters of Middle Paleolithic and Upper Paleolithic has attracted much attention and adduced as favorable evidence of communication between the East and the West. However, it is still vague about how the communication occurred in this cultural phenomenon, or it is just telling one story of “complete influence from the West”. By recognizing the existence of Levallois technique in SDG culture this opinion can only be reinforced. Whereas, new evidence make it possible to be doubted and survey anew the content and significance of the culture. Based on many fine researching work made by scholars home and abroad, a pertinent study has been carried out and many common phenomena of typical Paleolithic sites in North China and circumjacent region have been revealed. Among them, the “Donggutuo (DGT) core” identified by the present author from SDG and some other sites is taken as a key clue and full characteristic of Eastern cultural style rooted in the East far time ago. Corresponding to Levallois core in the West, the DGT core is an Eastern example as a cultural mark in prehistoric time. Nay, it had been exported and transported into a big surrounding area in North China and Northeastern Asia. The “DGT core” and relevant cultural assemblages provide a lineal development of Paleolithic culture in North China. It represents the most primitive shape of narrow-shaped core which has been researched as a rooted type of microlithic wedge-shaped core in the vast territory of Northeast Asia, especially in East Asia. The “DGT core” can be taken as the earliest and the most important evidence of the origin of microblade cultural tradition and supports the Northern China Origin of microblade tradition. This issue not only concerns the problem of origin of early human but also modern human. The evidence is consistent with the theory of “Continuity and Hybridization”. Therefore, the author brings forward a new perspective on situation of SDG culture in communication between the East and the West through the reappearance of “DGT core”, and discusses the dominant and diffusive role played by the small tool industry of North China. Further, the author points out the necessity of establishing concepts of “North China center” and “local-originated, dominance and diffusion of small tool culture in North China”. A hypothesis of “Pre-Silk Road” namely “Lithic Road” is also proposed by the author in the article. Like many Middle and Upper Paleolithic sites in Middle and North Asia, SDG culture is supposed as one example of a vane of indicating the Eastern and the Western intercommunication and diffusion along the road during that time. Abstract: In the title compound, [Ca(NO3)(C34H32N10)]NO3·3CH4O, the CaII ion is coordinated by six N atoms of the EDTB ligand {EDTB is N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis[(2-benzimidazolyl)methyl]-1,2-ethanediamine} and two O atoms from the nitrate ligand, to form a distorted dodecahedral geometry. The crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular N—H...O, N—H...N and O—H...O hydrogen bonds, which link the constituent units into a three-dimensional network. The uncoordinated nitrate anion is disordered over two sites, with fixed occupancies of 0.77 and 0.23.
