The Role of the CoREST/REST Repressor Complex in Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Productive Infection and in Latency

Abstract: REST is a key component of the HDAC1 or 2, CoREST, LSD1, REST (HCLR) repressor complex. The primary function of the HCLR complex is to silence neuronal genes in non-neuronal cells. HCLR plays a role in regulating the expression of viral genes in productive infections as a donor of LDS1 for expression of α genes and as a repressor of genes expressed later in infection. In sensory neurons the HCLR complex is involved in the silencing of viral genome in the course of establishment of latency. The thesis of this article is that (a) sensory neurons evolved a mechanism to respond to the presence and suppress the transmission of infectious agents from the periphery to the CNS and (b) HSV evolved subservience to the HCLR with at least two objectives: to maintain a level of replication consistent with maximal person-to-person spread and to enable it to take advantage of neuronal innate immune responses to survive and be available for reactivation shielded from adaptive immune responses of the host.
Foreign gene transfer into Chinese shrimps (Penaeus chinensis) with gene gun

Abstract: Plasmids pG DNA-RZ1 with aGFP (green fluorescent protein) reporter gene and a ribozyme gene incising penaeid white spot baculovirus (WSBV) were first introduced into the fertilized eggs of Chinese shrimps by gene gun. The treated and control samples of different development stages were observed with a fluorescent microscope. The transient expression ofGFP gene was high in nauplius and zoea larvae. Results from RT-PCR and PCR for adults showed that the foreign genes had been transferred into the shrimps and had expressed the corresponding proteins. This work has established a transgenic method for penaeid shrimps, which will set base for the application of genetic engineering breeding into industry.

Establishment of a genetic transformation system for maize inbred P9-10

Abstract: It was found that the supplement of 10 4 mol/L AgNO3, in N6 medium enhanced the induction of type I embryogenic calli from immature embryos of maize inbred P9-10. After high-osmotic treatment, the induced calli was taken as transformation recipient to be bombarded with plasmid pMG6 carrying synthetic Bt gene by PDS-1000/He genegun. A total of 14 resistant calli were obtained after screening subsequently on the mediums with gradually increasing selective pressure. 10 plants were regenerated from the resistant calli on 3 different induction media, and 8 out of the 10 regenerated plants were confirmed to be integrated with Bt gene by PCR and Southern blotting analysis. Results of ELSA showed that the Bt-protein content in the leaves of the transgenic plants varied between 20–200 ng/g fresh weight.

Abstract: In the pyrolytic research onDunaliella salina cultured under natural conditions, abundant long chain regular isoprenoid hydrocarbons have been first detected and identified from algal pyrolytic product. Specially, the discovery of high abundant 2,6,10,14,18-pentamethyleicosane indicated that regular iC25 probably originated from specific holophilic algae in hypersaline environments. The result gave new referable evidence both for the distinguishment of biological origins of long chain isoprenoids found in sediments and petroleum and for the judgement of paleoenvironments.

Abstract: Gold distribution and transformation in algae-organic matter-fluid system is very complicated. Gold is first concentrated in kerogen after algae died. With the increase of dissolved organic matter owing to the increase of temperature and pressure, part of gold simultaneously emigrates from kerogen to DOM. When DOM forms organic fluid and emigrates from the strata, gold is simultaneously carried away by organic fluid in acidic condition, but by water in alkali condition. When the auriferous fluid flows through carbonaceous strata, gold in fluid is unloaded by kerogen. Gold migration in the system, accompanied by the evolution of algae-organic matter-fluid, provides the basic information of biometallogenetic evolution of gold.

Abstract: Organic fluid involved in Pb-Zn mineralization in the polymetallic deposit of Qixiashan probably derives from bacteria and algae, and is similar to that of the mature crude oil system. Part of lead and zinc in fluids can be transported by organic complexes, while their precipitation is caused by organic reduction. Biomarkers in ores can indicate the source of organic matter in fluids, but organic matter in inclusions must be studied to ascertain organic metallogenesis because of the EOM difference between ores and inclusions. The host strata of Upper Carboniferous (C2) and Lower Permian (PI) in Qixiashan deposit are both oil-bearing in the region. Identification of organic fluid and its biomarkers in the deposit provides significant information for further studies on the relationship between ore deposits and oil pools in the region.
Effect of intramuscular electro-acupuncture-mediatedVEGF gene transfer on experimental limb ischemia

Abstract: To investigate the feasibility of intramuscular electro-acupuncture-mediatedVEGF gene transfer on experimental limb ischemia, the transcription and expression ofVEGF gene have been detected with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry staining, and the biological effect ofVEGF gene inside the nat limb has been observed through vascular angiography. Results from angiography show that the transfer ofVEGF gene into the rat with experimental limb ischemia can stimulate the formation of neovessel, establish collateral circulation, augment blood perfusion, and ameliorate distal limb necrosis. These findings reveal that intramuscular electroacupuncture-mediatedVEGF gene transfer may present a new therapeutic modality for treating tissue ischemia.

Abstract: In this paper, an introduction of an auto-tracking parabolic remote sensing antenna with dual mode Archimedian spiral feed is given. Theoretical analysis, calculation and experimental measurement are made. The theoretical results are coincident with the measured ones. The results show that this antenna is suitable for remote sensing.
Levels of synthetic musk fragrances in human milk from three cities in the Yangtze River Delta in Eastern China

Abstract: Synthetic musks are used as additives in many household products. After absorption into the human body, they accumulate and their concentrations in human milk reflect both the mother and her infant's exposure level. Concentrations of four synthetic musks, musk xylene (1-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene, MX), musk ketone (4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dinitroacetophenone, MK), 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopentagamma]-2-benzopyran (HHCB) and 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl- 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (AHTN), were determined in human milk samples collected from Shanghai, Wuxi, and Shaoxing in Eastern China. The four synthetic musks were found in most samples analyzed, with HHCB the dominant component followed by MX. The median (mean) values for HHCB, AHTN, MX and MK concentrations were 63 (82), 5 (12), 17 (24) and 4 (9) ng/g lipid weight, respectively. These data suggested the total synthetic musk contamination was low, and the distribution percentage was HHCB > MX > AHTN approximately MK. The relative high ratio of nitro to polycylic musk indicated that nitro musks were still widely used. The musk concentrations in these cities were not significantly different from each other (p > 0.05). Principal components score plots were obtained, which showed similar exposure sources. The amount of total synthetic musks in human milk were not associated with mother's age, although HHCB was significantly correlated with AHTN (p < 0.05). Daily ingestion of HHCB, AHTN, MX and MK for infants from human milk were estimated as (2526 +/- 2926), (370 +/- 524), (7391 +/- 832), and (277 +/- 462) ng/day, respectively. Those doses were 1-2 orders of magnitude below the provisional tolerable daily intakes.
