Solution and Type Curve Analysis of Fluid Flow Model for Fractal Reservoir  [PDF]

Abstract: Conventional pressure-transient models have been developed under the assumption of homogeneous reservoir. However, core, log and outcrop data indicate this assumption is not realistic in most cases. But in many cases, the homogeneous models are still applied to obtain an effective permeability corresponding to fictitious homogeneous reservoirs. This approach seems reasonable if the permeability variation is sufficiently small. In this paper, fractal dimension and fractal index are introduced into the seepage flow mechanism to establish the fluid flow models in fractal reservoir under three outer-boundary conditions. Exact dimensionless solutions are obtained by using the Laplace transformation assuming the well is producing at a constant rate. Combining the Stehfest’s inversion with the Vongvuthipornchai’s method, the new type curves are obtained. The sensitivities of the curve shape to fractal dimension (θ) and fractal index (d) are analyzed; the curves don’t change too much when θ is a constant and d change. For a closed reservoir, the up-curving has little to do with θ when d is a constant; but when θ is a constant, the slope of the up-curving section almost remains the same, only the pressure at the starting point decreases with the increase of d; and when d = 2 and θ = 0, the solutions and curves become those of the conventional reservoirs, the application of this solution has also been introduced at the end of this paper.
The Relationship between the Motivation for Physical Activity and Life Skills among Chinese and Japanese College Students  [PDF]

Abstract: Participation in physical activity is beneficial for health and motivation is an important theme in sport psychology. The purpose of this study was to examine the difference of the relationship between the motivation for physical activity and daily life skills among Chinese and Japanese college students. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 1039 college students (Chinese, n = 526; Japanese, n = 513). Japanese and Chinese version of Physical Activity and Leisure Motivation Scale (PALMS, 1, 2) and a Daily Life Skills Scale for College Students (DLS, 3, 4) were completed by the participants. The PALMS includes eight sub scales which are Mastery, Physical Condition, Affiliation, Psychological Condition, Appearance, Others’ Expectations, Enjoyment and Competition/Ego. DLS includes 8 sub-scales, which are classified into 2 general skills: skills used mainly in personal situations (planning, knowledge summarization, self-esteem, and positive thinking), and skills used generally in interpersonal situations (intimacy, leadership, empathy, and interpersonal manner). The Chinese version of “Daily Life-Skills Scale” created in this study was confirmed, Significant differences between Chinese and Japanese University students were observed. Chinese college students had a higher mean score for the intimacy factor, leadership factor, planning factors, knowledge summarization factor and self-esteem factor. While Japanese college students had a higher mean scores for the aspects of empathy and interpersonal manner. This study found different relationships between the motivation for physical activity and daily life skills among Chinese and Japanese college students. It might be due to cultural differences between those countries. Future research should be focusing on gender and cultural differences of both countries regarding to the motivation for leisure.
Characterization of Immune Responses Induced by Immunization with the HA DNA Vaccines of Two Antigenically Distinctive H5N1 HPAIV Isolates

Abstract: The evolution of the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) has resulted in high sequence variations and diverse antigenic properties in circulating viral isolates. We investigated immune responses induced by HA DNA vaccines of two contemporary H5N1 HPAIV isolates, A/bar-headed goose/Qinghai/3/2005 (QH) and A/chicken/Shanxi/2/2006 (SX) respectively, against the homologous as well as the heterologous virus isolate for comparison. Characterization of antibody responses induced by immunization with QH-HA and SX-HA DNA vaccines showed that the two isolates are antigenically distinctive. Interestingly, after immunization with the QH-HA DNA vaccine, subsequent boosting with the SX-HA DNA vaccine significantly augmented antibody responses against the QH isolate but only induced low levels of antibody responses against the SX isolate. Conversely, after immunization with the SX-HA DNA vaccine, subsequent boosting with the QH-HA DNA vaccine significantly augmented antibody responses against the SX isolate but only induced low levels of antibody responses against the QH isolate. In contrast to the antibody responses, cross-reactive T cell responses are readily detected between these two isolates at similar levels. These results indicate the existence of original antigenic sin (OAS) between concurrently circulating H5N1 HPAIV strains, which may need to be taken into consideration in vaccine development against the potential H5N1 HPAIV pandemic.
RhoE Promotes Metastasis in Gastric Cancer through a Mechanism Dependent on Enhanced Expression of CXCR4

Abstract: RhoE, a novel member of the Rho protein family, is a key regulator of the cytoskeleton and cell migration. Our group has previously shown that RhoE as a direct target for HIF-1α and mediates hypoxia-induced epithelial to mesenchymal transition in gastric cancer cells. Therefore, we assumed that RhoE might play an important role in gastric cancer metastasis. In the present study, we have explored the role of RhoE expression in gastric cancer, cell invasion and metastasis, and the influence of RhoE on regulating the potential expression of down-stream genes. RhoE expression was elevated in gastric cancer tissues as compared with normal gastric tissues. We also found a close correlation between the histological grade and the diagnosis of the patient. Up-regulation of RhoE significantly enhanced the migratory and invasive abilities of gastric cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, down-regulation of RhoE diminished the metastatic potential of cancer cells. PCR array and subsequent transwell assay showed that the regulation of gastric cancer metastasis by RhoE was partially mediated by CXCR4. This observation suggested that CXCR4 might be a downstream effector for RhoE. In summary, our study identified RhoE as a novel prognostic biomarker and metastatic-promoting gene of gastric cancer.

Abstract: 利用GRACE重力卫星反演所得到的华北平原2003年~2015年的月均等效水高数据以及根据NCEP/NCAR再分析资料获取的华北平原大气边界层高度数据,对近13 a来上午6时的边界层高度和等效水高的年均值、月均值以及季节均值进行相关性分析,同时也对边界层高度和地下水水位变化的一致性进行了初步分析.结果表明:近13 a来上午6时的年均边界层高度和年均等效水高均呈现波动下降的特点,二者具有显著的线性相关性,R2为0.57;边界层高度对于地下水水位的变化响应具有一定滞后性,滞相关分析表明二者之间的滞后性在时间上可能表现为3个月.华北平原地下水水位持续下降,可能导致了华北区域大气边界层高度的下降,从而减弱了大气污染物在垂直方向上的扩散,减少了大气环境容量.因此,地下水水位下降可能是加重华北平原灰霾天气的一个重要因素之一,该研究为更全面研究我国灰霾的形成机理提供一个新的视角.
Analyzing Crash-Prone Drivers in Multiple Crashes for Better Safety Educational and Enforcement Strategies  [PDF]

Crash-prone drivers should be effectively targeted for various safety education and regulation programs because their over-involvement in crashes presents a big adverse effect on highway safety. By analyzing seven years of crash data from Louisiana, this paper investigates crash-prone drivers’ characteristics and estimates their risk to have crashes in the seventh year based on these drivers crash history of the past six years. The analysis results show that quite a few drivers repeatedly had crashes; seven drivers had 13 crashes in seven years; and the maximum number of crashes occurring in a single year to a single driver is eight. The probability of having crash(es) in any given year is closely related to a driver’s crash history: less than 4% for drivers with no crash in the previous six years; and slightly higher than 30% for drivers with nine or more crashes in the previous six years. Based on the results, several suggestions are made on how to improve roadway safety through reducing crashes committed by drivers with much higher crash risk as identified by the analysis.

Impact of Pedestrian Traffic on Saturation Rate of Protected Left-Turn at Urban Intersections  [PDF]

Abstract: Heavily congested intersections in metropolitan areas in China are facing unique problems due to high travel demand and a high degree of traffic law violations. Based on a study conducted by the authors of this paper, 93% of left-turn vehicles turning left in these areas were slowed in order to avoid conflict with pedestrians. Intertwined pedestrian and vehicular flows can significantly reduce the capacity of exclusive left-turn lane group through reducing saturation flow rate, which increases the congestion at intersections. This paper investigates how the saturation flow rate of exclusive left-turn lane group is affected by the characteristics of pedestrian flow. By analyzing the imagery data collected by video cameras installed at intersections, the research team is able to obtain the characteristics of both vehicular and pedestrian flows, such as speed and spatial locations. The average operating speed at the saturation flow rate with and without pedestrian traffic is used as a direct measurement to evaluate the effect of pedestrians. Based on the statistical analysis, the paper concludes that saturation flow rate is mainly affected by the position of pedestrian in the crosswalk (inside or outside of left-turn vehicle’s trajectory), and the distance between the vehicle and pedestrians. In general, when the distance is less than four meters, the smaller the distance between vehicle and pedestrians, the larger the impact. However, there is no significant impact when the distance is larger than four meters. To accurately quantify the effect, the degree of pedestrian-vehicle impact is defined in four levels. The results show that the difference in the saturation flow rate between the best and the worst level could be 15.7%, which clearly indicates how important it is to enforce pedestrian crossing behavior.
Area Classification of Surrounding Parking Facility Based on Land Use Functionality  [PDF]

Abstract: The different land use surrounding parking facility has significant impact on parking behavior. This paper studies the functional classification of land use surrounding parking facility, which is fundamentally important for indepth research on parking behavior. 37 parking facilities located between the second and sixth ring roadway in Beijing were selected for this study. Based on the surveys conducted at these parking facilities, various parking behavior were analyzed, based on which the scope of the different parking was determined. The information on location, land use characteristics, public transport, the surrounding parking situations are collected for each investigated parking facility. Applying the SPSS clustering method, the threshold was developed for the classification. Totally, five categories are proposed for the land use functionality surrounding parking facility as the results of this study.

Abstract: Priority of public transport is one of the important means to enhance the attraction of ground public transportation, and also an important content in the construction of a public transport city. In recent years, Beijing has witnessed large-scale construction of Bus Lane. Based on the current situation that the construction of Bus Lane lacks scientific decision-making methods, this study establishes the time sequence evaluation indicator system for the construction of Bus Lane by analyzing the influencing factors, builds a ranking model of the importance degree of the construction of Bus Lane, and conducts case verification.
Off-Ramp Control near Surface Road

Abstract: To enhance the overall performance of operation of urban expressway, a ramp metering control strategy is proposed to delays and queues of vehicle platoon along off-ramp near the surface road. This control mode measures the real time traffic conditions at off ramps through the derived occupancy data and then optimizes the green time and length of cycle. A Vissim based simulation analysis is used to verify the effectiveness of this proposed control strategy using the field data of Zhuque Bridge and Taoyuan Bridge of South 2 Ring Road in Xi’an city. The simulation results show that the traffic flows can be allocated homogeneously, even during the peak hours and the average traveling time and platoon queue can be reduced approximate 5~7%, compared with the simulated findings of no control mode and fixed time control mode.
