Influence of Misalignment on High-Order Aberration Correction for Normal Human Eyes

Abstract: Although a compensation device can correct aberrations of human eyes, the effect will be degraded by its misalignment, especially for high-order aberration correction. We calculate the positioning tolerance of correction device for high-order aberrations, and within what degree the correcting effect is better than low-order aberration (defocus and astigmatism)correction. With fixed certain misalignment within the positioning tolerance, we calculate the residual wavefront rms aberration of the first-6 to first-35 terms along with the 3rd--5th terms of aberrations corrected, and the combined first-13 terms of aberrations are also studied under the same quantity of misalignment. However, the correction effect of high-order aberrations does not meliorate along with the increase of the high-order terms under some misalignment, moreover, some simple combined terms correction can achieve similar result as complex combinations. These results suggest that it is unnecessary to correct too much the terms of high-orderaberrations which are difficult to accomplish in practice, and gives confidence to correct high-order aberrations out of the laboratory.

Abstract: Objective] We aim to find the new genes with biocatalytic potential from the plant microbiota metagenomic library by the means of high-throughput screening combined with multiple hybridizations based on probe stripping. Methods] First, the phage particles were used to infect EPI300?-T1R E. coli cells according to the titer of the phage particles as a primary library. After incubation the mixture was then divided into aliquots of 96 and cultured in the medium overnight, followed by storage in 2-mL 96-well plates. The resulting fosmids were hybridized to screen the library for the new enzyme genes. Results] We found a thoroughly removal of the probe by striping the nylon membrane as described here, and the target DNA on the nylon membrane can be used repeatedly for at least 7 times. All these resulted in a highly efficient means for storage and screening of the metagenomic library. Conclusion] By using the enoate reductase and short-chain dehydrogenase (SDR) as probes, candidate fosmid clones were obtained after two cycles of screening. Based on fosmid sequence analyses, new homologues of enoate reductase and SDR were found and cloned for subsequent heterologous expression and enzymology.

Abstract: Theoretical and experimental studies have been made about the electrical characteristics of Hg1-xCdxTe n+-p photodiodes with x=0.5 at room temperature and at hydrostatic pressures up to 2GPa. The observed "anomalous" pressure dependence of the current-voltage characteristics of p-n junctions, which exhibits in the small bias region, has been satisfactorily explained using a theory which takes into account the pressure dependence of deep levels and its effect on deep level-assisted tunneling current. By fitting the dark current to this theory, two deep levels, D1(=Ev + 0.75Eg) and D2( = Ev+0.5Eg), as well as their respective electron and hole lifetimes, were obtained. The pressure coefficients of deep levels in undoped Hg1-x Cdx Te were also obtained.
Nuclear Factor-κB–Dependent Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition Induced by HIF-1α Activation in Pancreatic Cancer Cells under Hypoxic Conditions

Abstract: Background Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) induced by hypoxia is one of the critical causes of treatment failure in different types of human cancers. NF-κB is closely involved in the progression of EMT. Compared with HIF-1α, the correlation between NF-κB and EMT during hypoxia has been less studied, and although the phenomenon was observed in the past, the molecular mechanisms involved remained unclear. Methodology/Principal Findings Here, we report that hypoxia or overexpression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) promotes EMT in pancreatic cancer cells. On molecular or pharmacologic inhibition of NF-κB, hypoxic cells regained expression of E-cadherin, lost expression of N-cadherin, and attenuated their highly invasive and drug-resistant phenotype. Introducing a pcDNA3.0/HIF-1α into pancreatic cancer cells under normoxic conditions heightened NF-κB activity, phenocopying EMT effects produced by hypoxia. Conversely, inhibiting the heightened NF-κB activity in this setting attenuated the EMT phenotype. Conclusions/Significance These results suggest that hypoxia or overexpression of HIF-1α induces the EMT that is largely dependent on NF-κB in pancreatic cancer cells.
Xylocarpin H, a Limonoid of Xylocarpus granatum, Produces Antidepressant-Like Activities in Mice  [PDF]

Abstract: Major depression is a common psychiatric disorder worldwide that imposes a substantial health burden on society. Currently available antidepressants do not meet the clinical needs. Here, we report that Xylocarpin H, a limonoid of Xylocarpus granatum, has antidepressant-like effects in mouse forced swimming and tail suspension tests, two validated models of depression. 7-day oral administration of Xylocarpin H resulted in dose-dependent decreases immobility duration within the dose range of 15 - 50 mg/kg. Xylocarpin H dose-dependently increases the time spent in the central zone at doses of 5 - 50 mg/kg in locomotion activity test. In addition, 7-day treatment Xylocarpus H at 15 and 50 mg/kg doses significantly decreases levels of serum corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) following the acute stress of forced swimming test. Furthermore, these effective doses of Xylocarpin H do not affect locomotor activity and levels of serum corticosterone and ACTH in the absence of stress. In summary, the present study, for the first time, demonstrates that Xylocarpin H exerts antidepressant-like effects in mouse behavioral models of depression, likely by inhibiting HPA axis systems. These data provide primarily basis for developing Xylocarpin H as a novel antidepressant candidate for the treatment of depression and stress related disorders.
Parametric Mapping of Brain Tissues from Diffusion Kurtosis Tensor

Abstract: Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is a new diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique to go beyond the shortages of conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) from the assumption that water diffuse in biological tissue is Gaussian. Kurtosis is used to measure the deviation of water diffusion from Gaussian model, which is called non-Gaussian, in DKI. However, the high-order kurtosis tensor in the model brings great difficulties in feature extraction. In this study, parameters like fractional anisotropy of kurtosis eigenvalues (FAek) and mean values of kurtosis eigenvalues (Mek) were proposed, and regional analysis was performed for 4 different tissues: corpus callosum, crossing fibers, thalamus, and cerebral cortex, compared with other parameters. Scatterplot analysis and Gaussian mixture decomposition of different parametric maps are used for tissues identification. Diffusion kurtosis information extracted from kurtosis tensor presented a more detailed classification of tissues actually as well as clinical significance, and the FAek of -eigenvalues showed good sensitivity of tissues complexity which is important for further study of DKI.
Acute Fibrosarcomas Caused by Avian Leukosis Virus Subgroup J Associated with v-fps Oncogene

Abstract: To explore the reason of acute fibrosarcoma formation in chickens, researchers detected the existence of viral antigens in the cytoplasm of infected CEFs by monoclonal antibody against ALV-J and rabbit polyclonal antibody against oncogene-fps protein. PCR amplified the whole genome sequence of the replication-competent ALV-J (SD1005), alignment of the complete sequence demonstrated that it has no remarkable mutation in the genome and appears not to be the real pathogen inducing the acute tumorigensis. Additionally, we obtained several genome sequences associated with ALV-J (Fu-J1-6) which is defective with parts of gag, pol and env genes replaced by a sequence of fps gene. The sequences of Fu-Js revealed that their genomes are closely related to that of SD1005 and probably derived from it in accordance with the high homology (>99%) in env gene between them. Notably, compared with homologous region of Fujinami and PRCII, the obtained v-fps genes in the study have two deletion mutations at both ends with the major diversity at the 3'-fps end, especially. So, researchers infer that it seems to be unstable for junction site in the process of recombination between c-fps oncogene and retrovirus ALV, a majority of variable individuals at gene level (quasispecies) will generate, one strain of which has biological activity at least. Obviously, the induction of acute fibrosarcomas in the experiment occurs through mechanisms involving the direct activation of viral oncogene v-fps in Fu-Js rather than insertional activation of cellular oncogene c-fps, revealing that the tumorigenesis induced by ALV-J is probable to involve fps oncogene besides for the myc oncogene. This is the first report on acute fibrosarcomas caused by ALV-J containing v-fps oncogene since the identification of this virus in 1988.
Integrated hydrologic modeling in the inland Heihe River Basin, Northwest China

Abstract: As a typical inland river basin in arid Northwest China, having distinct hydrological characteristics and severe and representative water problems, the Heihe River Basin (HRB) has attracted considerable research interest worldwide and in 2007 became a pilot basin of the G-WADI network of UNESCO/IHP. Many research programs have been conducted in the HRB since the 1980s, producing rich knowledge and data about the basin, which will be very helpful to further studies. This paper reviews research efforts related to hydrologic modeling and ongoing model integration studies performed in the HRB in recent years. Recently, an observation network covering the whole area and a Web-based data-sharing system have been established which can greatly improve data acquisition. This paper tabulates modeling activities in past years, including model applications, model modifications and enhancements, and model coupling efforts. Also described is a preliminary modeling integration tool designed to quickly build new models, which has been developed for hydrologic modeling purposes. Challenges and issues confronted in current studies are discussed, pointing toward key research directions in the future.
