On plurisubharmonicity of the solution of the Fefferman equation and its applications to estimate the bottom of the spectrum of Laplace-Beltrami operators

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a concept of super-pseudoconvex domain. We prove that the solution of the Feffereman equation on a smoothly bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain $D$ in $\CC^n$ is plurisubharmonic if and only if $D$ is super-pseudoconvex. As an application, we give a lower bound estimate the bottom of the spectrum of Laplace-Beltrami operators when $D$ is super-pseudoconvex by using the result of Li and Wang \cite{LiWang}.
Peer-based behavioral health program for drug users in China: a pilot study

Abstract: A convenience sample of 667 drug users from two rehabilitation centers in South China was recruited in the study. Two hundred and forty seven drug users from a single Guangdong Province rehabilitation center received the peer-based education intervention, while 420 drug users from another rehabilitation center received routine HIV/STI education and was used as the control. One hundred and eighty nine (22.1%) individuals refused to participate in the study. HIV/STI behavioral and knowledge domains were assessed at 3 months in rehabilitation centers after the intervention (first follow-up) and at 2-23 months in the community after release (second follow-up).Drug users who completed the intervention reported more frequent condom use with casual sex partners (60.0% vs. 12.5% condom use every time, p = 0.011) and less frequent injection (56.7% vs. 26.4% no injection per day, p = 0.008) at the second follow-up compared to those in the routine education group. Loss to follow up was substantial in both control and intervention groups, and was associated with living far from the detention center and having poor HIV knowledge at baseline.This study shows that rehabilitation centers may be a useful location for providing behavioral HIV/STI prevention services and referral of individuals to community-based programs upon release. More research is needed on behalf of detained drug users in China who have complex social, medical, and legal needs.China's HIV epidemic has shifted from that of predominately injection drug users' (IDUs) to one that is predominately sexually transmitted [1-6]. Abstract: We consider a class of complete Kahler manifolds with a strictly pseudoconvex boundary at infinity. After studying its asymptotic geometry, we formulate a conjecture in the Kahler-Einstein case relating the bottom of spectrum to the CR geometry on the boundary. We prove some partial results.

Abstract: We discuss a sharp lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the sublaplacian on a closed, strictly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian manifold of dimension $2m+1\geq 5$. We prove that the equality holds iff the manifold is equivalent to the CR sphere up to a scaling. The essential step is a characterization of the CR sphere when there is a nonzero function satisfying a certain overdetermined system.

Abstract: We construct a special plurisubharmonic defining function for a smoothly bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain so that the determinant of the complex Hessian vanishes to high order on the boundary. This construction, coupled with regularity of solutions of complex Monge-Ampere equation and the reflection principle, enables us to give a new proof of the Fefferman mapping theorem.

Functional Characterizations of Chemosensory Proteins of the Alfalfa Plant Bug Adelphocoris lineolatus Indicate Their Involvement in Host Recognition

Abstract: Insect chemosensory proteins (CSPs) have been proposed to capture and transport hydrophobic chemicals from air to olfactory receptors in the lymph of antennal chemosensilla. They may represent a new class of soluble carrier protein involved in insect chemoreception. However, their specific functional roles in insect chemoreception have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we report for the first time three novel CSP genes (AlinCSP1-3) of the alfalfa plant bug Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze) by screening the antennal cDNA library. The qRT-PCR examinations of the transcript levels revealed that all three genes (AlinCSP1-3) are mainly expressed in the antennae. Interestingly, these CSP genes AlinCSP1-3 are also highly expressed in the 5th instar nymphs, suggesting a proposed function of these CSP proteins (AlinCSP1-3) in the olfactory reception and in maintaining particular life activities into the adult stage. Using bacterial expression system, the three CSP proteins were expressed and purified. For the first time we characterized the types of sensilla in the antennae of the plant bug using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Immunocytochemistry analysis indicated that the CSP proteins were expressed in the pheromone-sensitive sensilla trichodea and general odorant-sensitive sensilla basiconica, providing further evidence of their involvement in chemoreception. The antennal activity of 55 host-related semiochemicals and sex pheromone compounds in the host location and mate selection behavior of A. lineolatus was investigated using electroantennogram (EAG), and the binding affinities of these chemicals to the three CSPs (AlinCSP1-3) were measured using fluorescent binding assays. The results showed several host-related semiochemicals, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (E)-2-hexen-1-al and valeraldehyde, have a high binding affinity with AlinCSP1-3 and can elicit significant high EAG responses of A. lineolatus antennae. Our studies indicate the three antennae-biased CSPs may mediate host recognition in the alfalfa plant bug A. lineolatus.
Screening of high virulent strain of Metarhizium spp. against the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

Abstract: Nine strains of different species of Metarhizium,including strain of M.flavoviride(Mf82) newly isolated from Nilaparvata lugens(Stl),and eight M.anisopliae strains from lab collection,were tested against the adults of N.lugens.The chitinase activities of these strains were also assayed.The results showed that both the cumulative mortality(82.1%) and the chitinase activity(9.78U/mg) of strain Mf82 were the highest among all tested strains.Scanning electron microscope(SEM) observations showed the germinating conidia of the strain Mf82 penetrated the cuticle not only via the intersegmental membranes and folded regions,but also through the pronotum which contained a large quantity of chitin.The biological characteristics of these strains,including growth rate,sporulation,germination rate and timing of sporulation,were further investigated.The results showed Mf82 was the best strain having strong pathogenicity and exhibited a great potential for sustainable control of N.lugens.
