Effect of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin on Survivin Expression in Brain Tissues after Traumatic Brain Injury in Rats  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To explore the regulative effect on Survivin of r-HuEPO after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rats, and understand the neuroprotection mechanisms of r-HuEPO. Methods: Seventy-eight adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into sham operation group (n = 6), TBI group (n = 36) and r-HuEPO group (n = 36). The experimental TBI model was created by Feeney’s method. Samples were obtained after injury for measuring apoptosis of cells by Epics XL Flow Cytometer. Immunochemical method was performed for inspection of expressions of Survivin and NF-κB proteins. Results: Compared to the sham group, the number of apoptotic cells and Survivin, NF-κB immunopositive cells was significantly increased in the injured brain after TBI (P < 0.01). R-HuEPO significantly increased the expression of survivin and NF-κB, but decreased the apoptotic rates. Conclusion: Increased expression of NF-κB by r-HuEPO may play important role in regulating Survivin level, inhibiting neuronal apoptosis in cortex and exerting protective function to neurons.
Preparation, Characterization, and Photocatalytic Property of - Nanocomposites

Abstract: The Cu2O-TiO2 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by the homogeneous hydrolysation, followed by the solvothermal crystallization and ethylene glycol-thermal reduction process, respectively. The obtained products were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), Uv-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, laser particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The photocatalytic performance of Cu2O-TiO2 nanocomposites was evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) as a model compound. The experimental results showed that the prepared Cu2O-TiO2 nanocomposite exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of MO than the pure Cu2O and the commercial Degussa P25 TiO2 under visible light irradiation.
Seasonal and Diurnal Variations of Atmospheric Non-Methane Hydrocarbons in Guangzhou, China

Abstract: In recent decades, high ambient ozone concentrations have become one of the major regional air quality issues in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), as key precursors of ozone, were found to be the limiting factor in photochemical ozone formation for large areas in the PRD. For source apportioning of NMHCs as well as ozone pollution control strategies, it is necessary to obtain typical seasonal and diurnal patterns of NMHCs with a large pool of field data. To date, few studies have focused on seasonal and diurnal variations of NMHCs in urban areas of Guangzhou. This study explored the seasonal variations of most hydrocarbons concentrations with autumn maximum and spring minimum in Guangzhou. The diurnal variations of most anthropogenic NMHCs typically showed two-peak pattern with one at 8:00 in the morning and another at 20:00 in the evening, both corresponding to traffic rush hours in Guangzhou, whereas isoprene displayed a different bimodal diurnal curve. Propene, ethene, m, p-xylene and toluene were the four largest contributors to ozone formation in Guangzhou, based on the evaluation of individual NMHCs’ photochemical reactivity. Therefore, an effective strategy for controlling ozone pollution may be achieved by the reduction of vehicle emissions in Guangzhou.

Abstract: 通过罐采样和预浓缩-色谱/质谱方法,对珠三角地区广州城区和鼎湖山大气中HCFC-22进行了初步的观测和分析.结果表明,2005年广州城区HCFC-22年平均体积分数达到(479.5±241.4)×10-12,鼎湖山仅为(244.4±51.3)×10-12.广州城区大气HCFC-22日变化幅度夏秋季节相对较大,而鼎湖山日变化不明显;广州城区大气HCFC-22的体积分数夏秋季节高于冬春季节,鼎湖山则相反.与城区HCFC-22排放的季节性有关,夏秋季节广州城区与鼎湖山HCFC-22体积分数差别很大,冬春季节则比较接近.初步研究结果表明,广州城区和鼎湖山大气HCFC-22的体积分数呈现快速增长趋势,年增长率分别达到6.57%和7.28%,约为一些全球基准观测站(NOAA/CMDL)的1.9~2.8倍.

Abstract: To investigate the clinical feature, risk factors and outcome of treatment in patients with liver failure complicated by invasive fungal infections. Retro-spective analysis of the clinical data and related factors of 27 patients with liver failure com-plicated by invasive fungal infections was per-formed. These patients were admitted from January 2007 to August 2009 in our department. Among them, Candida albicans accounted for 17cases (54.84%), albicans tropicals for 4 cases (12.90%). Fungal infection in respiratory tract and alimentary tract accounted for 58.06% and 11% respectively. 81.25% of them had fever fluctuating from 37.4oC to 40oC. 81.25% had elevated white blood cell counts .All had the usage of broad-spectrum of antibiotics, whereas some of them used corticosteroids and had invasive medical manipulation for the treatment. Most patients deteriorated after invasive fungal infections. 21 cases accepted with the treatment of antifungal drugs and mortality rate was 63.00%. It was found that the invasive fungal infection possibility of patients with liver failure significantly increased. To prevent the occurrence of invasive fungal infection, promptly early treatment of liver failure, proper use of antibiotics, cautious use or disuse of corticosteroids, reduction of invasive medical manipulation should be well done. Early detection and treatment of fungal infection are vital to decrease in mortality rate.
Anomopterellidae Restored, with Two New Genera and Its Phylogeny in Evanioidea (Hymenoptera)

Abstract: Background Anomopterellidae was originally classified as a family within the Evanioidea, and later lowered to a subfamily, Anomopterellinae, of Praeaulacidae. Up to date, only Rasnitsyn 1975, with four species, was assigned to Anomopterellinae. Due to their special wing venation and their metasomal attachment similar to those known in Evanioidea, the systematic position of Anomopterellinae in Evanioidea has been in contention. Principal Findings Here we report a new fossil genus Synaphopterella gen. nov. and six species from the Middle Jurassic of China and transfer Anomopterella stenocera Rasnitsyn, 1975, from Upper Jurassic of Kazakhstan, to Choristopterella gen. nov. We place these three genera in the restored family Anomopterellidae and provide a key to known genera and species. Conclusions/Significance Based on new fossil specimens and phylogenetic analyses, Praeaulacidae has the most basal position in Evanioidea and it is justifiable to restore Anomopterellidae Rasnitsyn, 1975 as a full family. Comparing the size of all described anomopterellids from China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan, we conclude that the species from China have larger bodies and forewings. Diversity of the Praeaulacidae and Anomopterellidae in the late Middle Jurassic of Daohugou suggests that Evanioidea appeared at least before the late Middle Jurassic.
Optimal Transport in Worldwide Metro Networks

Abstract: Metro networks serve as good examples of traffic systems for understanding the relations between geometric structures and transport properties.We study and compare 28 world major metro networks in terms of the Wasserstein distance, the key metric for optimal transport, and measures geometry related, e.g. fractal dimension, graph energy and graph spectral distance. The finding of power-law relationships between rescaled graph energy and fractal dimension for both unweighted and weighted metro networks indicates the energy costs per unit area are lower for higher dimensioned metros. In L space, the mean Wasserstein distance between any pair of connected stations is proportional to the fractal dimension, which is in the vicinity of our theoretical calculations treated on special regular tree graphs. This finding reveals the geometry of metro networks and tree graphs are in close proximity to one another. In P space, the mean Wasserstein distance between any pair of stations relates closely to the average number of transfers. By ranking several key quantities transport concerned, we obtain several ranking lists in which New York metro and Berlin metro consistently top the first two spots.
